As soon as Isabel notices her parents are attending the same show as her and her new boyfriend, she intricately details their current state and, in turn, this detail-orientation creates amusement. Isabel begins her description by comparing her mother’s outfit to a “willow tree”. De Botton uses this simile disguised as an insult to portray Isabel’s mother’s character as one of whom Isabel does not approve; it additionally implies her old age from which Isabel wishes to distance herself. Furthermore, de Botton foreshadows family crisis and turmoil in his introduction suggesting that Isabel’s mother has multiple “gentleman friends” as Isabel hopes “she didn’t come with one” of them. Not only is her mother unfaithful to her father, but, “with any luck, they’ll be too busy arguing to glance up” at Isabel and her date indicating an unhappy marriage. This whole opening passage filled with the negative qualities of her family is ironic as she explicitly reveals every secret she desires to keep from her new date despite her efforts in avoiding her family. From the beginning, before Isabel’s parents saw her, she desperately hoped her parents would “be too busy arguing to glance up here” because “Mum [would] be asking Dad where he put the car park ticket and he [would] get flustered because he [would have] just dropped it into a bin by mistake”. When her first hope is crushed as her dad notices her right after readers are left to wonder about the clumsiness of her father and Isabel’s guess about the situation between her parents. This creates anticipation among readers as they are forced to continue the story in order to find out whether Isabel is correct about her father. Being an already established comedic situation through de Botton’s use of other device, readers expect irony, a previously used device as well as a common device used for comedic effect but their expectations are upset when Isabel proves to be right about her parents, specifically the actions of her father. Once the anticipation has built up at the end, readers are provided comedic relief with the result different from the previously used irony. Hyperbole is an exaggeration of speech, describing or saying something you have done, will do, or has happened that is not meant to be taken in a literal sense. Esquivel uses the literary device to describe a sensual moment between her and the person she loves, Pedro, to describe the lengths they have gone to continue a forbidden relationship. Their new way of communication through food is powerful as it shows the lengths they will go to get to each other, but also as it gets you to think about their love and how the desire to partake in something they have not yet experienced with each other is causing them to go through these lengths to experience love. Esquivel uses the scene of a wedding to depict the extreme wanting and longing of love and desire and its effects, “The moment they took their first bite of the cake, everyone was flooded with a great longing”(39).

After reading the critical essay “Neon Gothic: Lost in Translation” by Wendy Haslem, her central argument was found to be that of how Lost in Translation (Coppola,2003) presents a nontraditional approach to a romance in comparison to the expected. Haslem goes on to support her claim of an unconventional romance by using examples of scenes from the film, such as the scene where Bob and Charlotte share a goodbye kiss. In traditional romantic films, there is no mistake in understanding the intent of a kiss. However, in Lost in Translation, the intent of the kiss shared between Bob and Charlotte is not very direct and arises a lot of questions to its meaning. Another piece of textual evidence found to support the claim is the connection made between the two main characters throughout the film.
The narrator seems to beam whenever he speaks about their love. While reading, it is quickly understood the loving role she plays. As the story progresses, it is evident that Isabel never gives up on the narrator. In fact, she loved him despite her parents “not really wanting her to marry him,” (Baldwin 17). To begin, once the challenges of Trujillo become more intense, Dede finds herself unable to handle it, “She shuts her eyes tight and wished blindly that everything would turn out all right” (pg. 78). This statement is important because it illustrates the gender roles women should take on throughout the novel. Specifically, this quotation shows how Dede hopes for her husband find a solution to the issue at hand, as she closes her eyes instead of facing the problem. The short story has expressed the theme through a character’s first exprience of sexuality. “I never knew this would be so embarrassing! I can’t watch them anymore so I turn around to Brad who still is”(page 4). Deidre feels very embarrassed by watching her dad having conversation with Rita.
Dramatic monologue is a technique used by many poets and writers to allow one character to speak directly to another character continuously and uninterrupted. When a writer uses this technique, it invites the reader into the intimacy of the character’s private relationship with one another. The monologue used by Stuart Dybek’s speaker in “We Didn’t” replays an incident from their past. The reader steps foot into the shoe’s of the speaker’s ex girlfriend, Gin, as the voice reminisces over the summer that almost resulted in their first time having intercourse. The role of the reader as the character Gin is clear in the opening lines of the short story.
Although the humor and irony is greatly exaggerated in this situation, the author’s style assists the reader in relating to the narrator and becoming more involved in the challenges that are presented within the text. Both in this essay and in Putting Daddy On, I was able to relate to the purpose of each narrative although they used different styles. While this essay focuses more on the effect that humor has on its readers, it is still presented in such a way that the argument becomes relatable to anyone who has encountered a situation similar to this
The setting allows the reader to understand how people without honour are seen as outcasts of the society and the existence of a woman’s virginity is seen as a measure of her honour, as well as a precious commodity, which can purchase the family’s social advancement, through a marriage of convenience. Ángela states that Santiago deflowered her, but since “…she looked for it in the shadows…”, even though “She only took the time necessary to say the name.” we question this piece of information and its reliability, due to it being precise but also vague at the same time. Due to their sister stating this, Pablo and Pedro Vicario are ordered to reinstate their “…sister’s lost honour…”, ironically by their mother, to meet the expectations of the community and it is up to them to spiritually retrieve their sister’s virginity by killing Santiago. This means the brothers cannot back down from “…the horrible duty that’s fallen on them…” as “…there’s no way out of this…”.
Lola takes advantage of her deteriorating mother whose illness represents the declining hold of the norms over Lola. Since her mom “will have trouble lifting her arms over her head for the rest of her life,” Lola is no longer afraid of the “hitting” and grabbing “by the throat” (415,419). As a child of a “Old World Dominican Mother” Lola must be surrounded by traditional values and beliefs that she does not want to claim, so “as soon as she became sick” Lola says, “I saw my chance and I’m not going to pretend or apologize; I saw my chance and I eventually took it” (416). When taking the opportunity to distinguish herself from the typical “Dominican daughter” or ‘Dominican slave,” she takes a cultural norm like long hair and decides to impulsively change it (416). Lola enjoyed the “feeling in [her] blood, the rattle” that she got when she told Karen to “cut my hair” (418).
Alvarez and her family have a lot of trauma considering there lives in the dominican republic and living under the dictator,through it all alvarez's parents raised a daughter who would share their story in a fashionable matter that told the story how it was.
In Sandra Cisneros’ “The House on Mango Street,” the chapter, The Monkey Garden, describes Esperanza playing in the garden with Sally and a few of the boys when things take a turn Esperanza is uncomfortable with. At times, Esperanza is naïve and inexperienced, but other times, she exudes an awareness of someone much older. This awareness comes to light multiple times throughout the novel and Sally is often a catalyst of this awareness – this chapter is no exception. The Monkey Garden showcases the dichotomy that lies within Esperanza; the dichotomy of being both innocent and intuitive, both aware and naïve. Esperanza begins this chapter with a keen awareness.
In the story “Sagittarius” by Greg Hrbek, there are descriptive phrases that set the mood. They are important because they give the reader an explanation of what's going on with the characters. They're also important because it gives a specific perspective to the reader and helps their imagination. The story is about a family that deals with a deformed child with four legs. The section of the story that stood out to me the most is when the father comes home to his son standing, even with his condition because it gives you the dad's opinion about his son,what his problem is, and it makes you feel a certain way about the character.
The novel ‘Nada’ written by Carmen Laforet is a twisted heart-breaking tale about a year in the life of the 18-year-old female protagonist Andrea. Throughout this year, Andrea spends in Barcelona with her relatives, she developed various relationships, both homosexual and heterosexual. For the purpose of this essay I will discuss Andrea’s highly affective homosexual relationships with her best friend Ena and her aunt Gloria and how she views and describes both woman differently. I will also briefly contrast her homosexual relationships with that of her heterosexual relationships with Pons and her uncle Román. I will begin with discussing Adrea’s relationship with Gloria, as this relationship began before her relationship with Ena did.
