In the different texts I’ve read called “The Purpose Of Education” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and “Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail” by Angel B. Perez I’ve notice although they bear some minor similarities the differences between the both are very clear. One major difference in both the text is the time they were written. Text #1 purpose of education was published in 1947 and text #2 learn to fail was in 2012 already they can both bring up a variety of topics, but I still see some of the same patterns even after half a century later. Not to say that both can’t tap into or overlap on some similar and enthralling ideas about education. Success, in our society on the other hand, is usually viewed as materialistic. Lots of money, big houses, fancy cars and basically a lot of flash, lets society know that you have made it. Young adults are pressured in high school to succeed so that they may be able to attend college, and have a successful career. Adults sometimes forget that teenagers are not perfect and making mistakes, is a huge part of growing up. However, youth also must understand that struggles, are an opportunity for growth and not shame. In the commentary “Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail” the admission officer, craves to hear and read about the life stories that involve hardship, understanding, change and growth because they get students who present themselves as individuals without flaws.(Angel B. 60). Students applying to these colleges hide or do away with the concept that at one time they were not perfect.
