Judy Chicago The Dinner Party Analysis

On Friday, October 2nd, I visited the Wittliff art collection at Texas State University. I was very excited at how much art I was going to see as I made my way to the 7th floor of the Alkek Library, which is where the Wittliff art collection is located in. Sadly, with all of the artwork that was displayed, I was having trouble deciding on which art pieces to write this critique on. However, two certain 2-D pieces caught my eye. Out of all of the displays in the art collection, I ended up choosing Keith Carter’s photograph and Kate Breakey’s painted photograph.

Thinking that the pottery was a wonderful treasure and afraid it would sell for less than it was worth, he put thousands of baffling shapes of “eggshell-thin walls and sensual, richly textured glazes” into creates (Powell 269). His beautiful pieces were identified for their inspirational appearance in the 1960’s (Wiggins 6). His gift of pottery that was over seven thousand pieces of the art were founded by the world in the 1970’s (Powell 269). “Now Ohr’s vessels are stored in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in addition to the Ohr- O'keefe Museum in Biloxi” (Wiggins 6).

Sculptures are a form of artwork that portray a certain message towards an audience at hand. The University of Texas at Austin holds the following two sculptures which remind us of the power of artistry: Martin Luther King, Jr (1999) and Blue Woman in Black Chair (1981). The former monument, by Ana Koh-Varilla and Jeffrey Varilla, stands in the East Mall and the latter, by George Segal, sits on the 2nd floor of the Blanton Museum. Both sculptures represent a distinct human figure yet, differ in their components in relation to their size/scale, subject matter and figure/drapery. Regarding size/ scale the Varillas create a larger than life sized bronze, figure placed on a sturdy pedestal, demonstrating the concept of authority and influence.

The Dinner Party is an artwork by feminist artist Judy Chicago. The piece symbolises a history of women in the Western world, while being regarded greatly as the first epic feminist artwork. Like many of the women represented in this piece, Teresa de Cartagena explores some of the earliest feminist territories while transgressing between cultures in a conservative and male dominated society. For this reason, I believe she deserves a seat at the dinner table. Teresa de Cartagena explores themes of self-knowledge, feminism and gender in her works while relaying her own personal and physical experiences through imagery and metaphors.

The Orlando Museum of Art, also known as OMA, is a hub of Central Florida when it comes to pulling in remarkable works of art for the public eye to pay patronage to. Today I visited such a place for the annual Antiques Vintage and Garden Show, which took place between February 19th through the 21st. Included in the price of a ticket was also admission to The OMA’s current exhibitions, which included Women of Vision: National Geographic Photographers and their other running exhibits, which contained an array of work, ranging from Pre-Columbian sculptures to more contemporary works of the 21st century. The specific exhibit which held my interest most was the Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican gallery titled “A Trek from North to South”, which was organized by geographic locations in Latin America. In the short story The Party by Pam Munoz Ryan, there was a conflict and a theme that occurred. A girl wants to be invited to Bridget’s party, but she doesn’t get an invite while everyone she knows does. She goes throughout the day doubting herself on why she didn’t get invited. The gist of the story is this.

“The Cardboard Room” by Teresa Pitman is about a teenage girl who comes from a judgmental family. Particularly, they are not fond of a refugee family, who according to them do not belong. When assigned to work on a project with a member of the family, Eric Nye, she begins to understand how someone’s appearance does not define who they truly are. After spending more time with Eric and his family she quickly realizes that people should not be judged and criticized for their circumstances. Eric informs the protagonist about events that happened back home and the struggles it took to get where they are today.

The Dinner written by Herman Koch challenges the ideas of what makes a family, the violence involved as well as having disturbing images. The novel follows a family over the courses of a dinner at a not so normal restaurant. The family wants to be happy, despite the secret that they all share. There is a tremendous amount of violence that is shown in the novel, with disturbing images that many would not like to imagine.

Archibald John Motley Jr.’s painting, “Mending Socks”, illustrates an elderly woman sitting in a rocking chair. She has a scarlet blanket loosely hung around her shoulders and is wearing a lace-bordered white apron. Above her on the wall is a wooden cross. In the painting she is repairing socks, hence the piece’s name. On the periwinkle table to her left is a small pile of olive green socks.

Sometimes the things we do for others don’t always go as planned. That was the case for the innocent wife in “Birthday Party” by Katharine Brush, as what was thought to be a nice gesture by the wife, was viewed as a crime by her husband. This small event can be an indicator of a crumbling relationship, and through literary devices such as diction and shifts to portray this deeper meaning. The harsh adjectives used throughout this piece paint a story much darker than simple botched celebration.

In “Birthday Party,” Katharine Brush’s purpose for writing the short story was to reveal how something that is good can go so wrong. She also demonstrates how some things are not what they seem. Especially in the situation that she wrote. Her purpose from the beginning to end is demonstrated by the use of literary devices. Brush begins by describing the scenario, she states, “They sat on the banquette opposite us.”

Though many of the Interior Decorators I will be talking about in this paper are dead now, many of them remain big icons in the architecture and interior design field to this day. Elsie de Wolfe, whom is still revered as America’s first decorator to this day. Eleanor McMillen Brown, a pioneer in the interior design field and founder of McMillen Inc.. Dorothy Draper, the first to “professionalize” the interior design industry by establishing the first interior design company in the United States. Elsie de Wolfe was an American decorator born in New York City. Besides being an interior decorator she was also a professional actress that performed various light comic and historical roles throughout the 1890s.

The Dinner Party Gender doesn’t define who you are and how you act. Men think they are invincible and it sometimes leads them on to say bold things. In “The Dinner Party”, by Mona Gardner the story takes place in India around the time period of 1940’s . During this time, society pushes the perspective of women in a negative way. Among the many guests there was a young girl and a high ranking colonel.

A man is more likely to maintain their composure over a woman in a crisis because they are more capable and secure. Or are they? A widely held belief that is anchored to fit the oversimplified image of what a group of people or one individual person or object is- or should be- is called a stereotype. In the story The Dinner Party by Mona Gardner, a controversial conversation arose between a young girl and a highly-respected colonel in the 1940s, in India. The guests at the elegant dinner party, were comprised of many government officials and their wives.
