Joseph Philippe Pierre Yves Elliot Trudeau was the 15th Prime Minister in Canada. He is recognized for his significant impact on Canadian politics because it brought a refinement to Canada for a better promise. He remains well renowned since he gave English and French language an equal status. He provided Canadians political rights and civil rights for citizens and non-citizens alike that lived in Canada. Also he allowed enhanced multiculturalism in the country. Pierre Elliot Trudeau benefitted Canada as Prime Minister because he established the Official Language Act, the Canadian Multiculturalism Act and the Charter of Rights and Freedom. Secondly, according to section 41 of the Official Language Act it supported and enhanced the French and English language in dialectal minor populations. This was implemented though the Official Language Support Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This act gave democratic, legal and equality rights. Firstly, are the democratic rights, which were specifically for citizens of Canada. According to the Charter of Rights and Freedom “every citizen of Canada has the right to vote in an election of members of the House of Commons or of a legislative assembly and to be qualified for membership therein” (The Charter of Rights and Freedoms 1982). This section granted all citizens the right to vote in federal, provincial or territorial election, and be a candidate in the elections. Secondly, was the legal right, which is for everyone in Canada. According to the act “everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of the person, and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” (The Charter of Rights and Freedoms 1982). Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms sets rights that protect us when dealing with the justice system. The charter ensures that “that individuals who are involved in legal proceedings are treated fairly, especially those charged with a criminal offence” (Section 7-14: Legal Rights).
