Last week I found the information that I gathered from the assignment on conducting a visit to a local healthcare facility to hold the most interesting concepts from me. Having worked for different healthcare facilities, I have had my share of Joint Commission visits. It is not at all a visit that hospital employees look forward to. Learning about the details behind what the surveyors intend to achieve by examining hospital practices, questioning employees and asking patients about their stay makes more sense now. One paramount difference right now is that healthcare organizations are essentially hiring in lieu of firing; hence, recruitment and retention are one of the most paramount issues. The Joint Commission is involved in making sure the health care facilities are providing the patient and family members of patients the effective and safe care that the patient needs and deserves. There is a close relationship between the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) and the results of the Joint Commission survey. Pleasant Bluffs: Launching A Home-Base Hospital Program While analyzing the case on Pleasants Bluffs, the main problem is how will they come up with a proposal for the pilot program for Pleasant Bluffs home-base hospital care and how to manage it. A mock survey, whether performed by internal teams or external experts, can be extraordinarily beneficial to the organization. These mock surveys should be viewed not just as a “survey preparation” activity, but as the opportunity to validate and celebrate sustained compliance and to identify opportunities for improvement, work-around and other challenges. While some might view mock surveys as being as stressful as the real survey or too time consuming, such activities provide excellent opportunities for improvement and are worth the investment. Surveys today are about all aspects of the organization so everyone must understand their role in providing care and protecting patient safety.
