John Winthrop's Struggle For Freedom In The United States

Why did Winthrop think that the Puritans were a special people? And why did he believe they had to be especially careful in their new endeavor? Puritan wanted to reform their church and opposed to the corruption of the Church of England so they moved to the New World. John Winthrop wanted to show England that their way was wrong; therefore he wanted to prove it to them by presenting that the Puritans have a successful colony.

Before anything Puritans came to the New World looking for freedom from the British Crown. While in their empire they had to obey the New England church, in which they absolutely hated. So it was promised that in the Americas they would not only have religious freedom the the chance to own their own land and properties, and lots of it. At first Salutary Neglect came to the colonize where Britain tried to impose laws or “acts” to the colonized but they were never truly enforced.

During the years of 1763 to 1775, the colonists in America were being taxed by the British Parliament. In the late 18th century, the British Parliament was in a war debt due to the conflict between the French and Indian war. Britain knew this debt had to be paid and who else to pay the debt than the people who were involved in the conflict. The British Parliament decided to tax those colonists who were part of the war. This is how the taxation of American colonists began and eventually led to the American Revolution.

In this day of time, there are many questions that rise controversy between people. A topic that has been the center of drama for years is the establishment between church and state. John Fea asks the blunt question: Was America Founded a Christian Nation? Throughout his book, John Fea contemplates the differing opinions on this subject. John Fea breaks this book into three parts.

Regardless of a colony’s religious situation, whether they allowed complete freedom of worship or were occupied by strict religious laws, all thirteen colonies were affected by a movement called the Great Awakening. Generally, the Great Awakening is characterized by a fervent revival in religion practice. Although, this movement had a major impact on most aspects of colonial life, it is important to note the effect it had on religion and how that in turn affected the political life of the colonist. Because of The Great Awakening, many ministers lost authority the authority they held over because more people were taking to studying the Bible in their own homes. This idea would have larger implications for the future.

Religion was very important to the Puritans in the 1600s. John Winthrop a member of the Puritans gentry, wrote to his wife the ‘I am verily persuaded God will bring some heavy affliction upon this land.” A year later he went and lead a group of a group of puritans to New England. By the 1630s another twenty thousand Puritans would come to America. When John became governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he told immigrants that will have to guide people toward this holy ideal or they were not welcomed.

John Winthrop Jr was an extremely influential figure in New England during the 1600’s, not only in Connecticut, but also in all of the New England colonies. Walter Woodward’s book, Prospero's America, illustrates just how diverse Winthrop Jr's interests and impacts were. Winthrop Jr is popularly known as the man who is greatly accountable for protecting Connecticut's existence and obtaining royal charter to govern Connecticut. Woodward tells his readers Winthrop Jr's other roles which ranged widely and also how these roles were interrelated. Woodward shows us a person with boundless talent with even larger dreams and desires (Godbeer).
