JOHN PROCTOR: TRAGIC HERO
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a greatly revered work, and it reflected the times of America in the days of McCarthyism. Perhaps the character that connected to the audience most was John Proctor, the protagonist of the play. He reflects the mistakes that we have made in our lives, and the struggle that some of have while trying to take the blindfold off of other people. He should be considered a hero because he feels guilt, and therefore tries to make up for the fact that he once had an affair. He also goes on and tries to explain to an unforgiving crowd that the witch hunts are a fake, and that it is all led by a lovesick girl.

Tragic heroes must have a flaw or error of judgment, also known as a hamartia, A reversal of fortune brought about because of the hero's error in judgment. the discovery or recognition that the reversal was brought about by the hero's own actions, and Excessive Pride, which is also known as hubris. Finally, the character's fate must be greater than deserved. Proctor’s hamartia is when he decides to have an affair with Abigail Williams. His affair is the event that leads him to his demise, which happens when his wife denies the affair, and ultimately gives the impression that Proctor is a liar. The reversal of fortune happens when Elizabeth Proctor is arrested under suspicion of witchcraft. Everything that was once in Proctor’s favor, such as having an honest wife, is suddenly turned against him. Next, Proctor’s own hubris turns on him. His fear of losing his reputation led him to destroying his confession documents, which condemned him to his death. Finally, Proctor did not deserve to die. He felt guilt and remorse, a sure sign that he was an honest man, and honest men do not deserve to die.
In conclusion, Arthur Miller’s John Proctor is a hero. Proctor trying to explain to that the witch hunts are led by a lovesick girl to an unforgiving crowd exuberates his characteristics as a hero. At the conclusion of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor exhibits tremendous honor. John’s moving oration just before destroying his confession revealed that he his thoughts towards lying. In an attempt to save his good name, John Proctor would put his life on the line to go out with honesty. Prior to the witch accusations, John Proctor put his good name in jeopardy after fooling around with Abigail Williams.
With John Proctor as our main character it is only suited that we claim him to be our one true tragic hero. He is introduced as a strong character that has secrets that few know. The reputation he has set forth for himself means a great deal to him. But, the higher you are the more the fall hurts. His fall from the graces was extremely tragic, as he proclaimed his act of adultery in front of God and everyone.
Crucible Romantic Hero In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, a landowner by the name of John Proctor can be described as an American Romantic Hero. Even though John does not “save” anyone inside of the play, he does try to protect the men and women who were accused of witchcraft by Abigail Williams. When someone thinks of a hero one thinks of pure and innocent, which John Proctor is not. There are more sides to a hero, none of them are perfect and innocent. Even though John does lie and commit adultery, he tries to save the men and women who were accused of doing witchcraft, including his wife Elizabeth Proctor.
John Proctor is a complex character. In The Crucible by Authur Miller it shows how people in a community that believed in witchcraft and have personal grudges against each other can end badly. John Proctor is not a perfect protagonist but shows that he is willing to do what is right to stop all the bewitching in Salem. John Proctor's character flaw is that he cannot forgive himself. The only thing John Proctor had left was his name.
When reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller, some might think that John Proctor is a good and honest man right? Wrong. John Proctor is nothing but a fraud, a scoundrel; and even though he is respected and sometimes even feared in Salem, he has come to think of himself as a bit of a fraud. Although a sinner, Proctor keeps his secret of adultery from everyone in Salem. Abigail, John’s secret lover, and a group of girls were seen dancing in the forest.
John Proctor,who’s considered the protagonist in the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, expresses his sincereness through the world of hysteria. Proctor is a man that can be described as one full of honesty, which he evidently portrays in the play, but the adultery. While he faces the judges, he refuses to lie to them because of this trait . The one person who could have stopped the Salem Witch Trials was none other than a tragic hero. Aristotle developed the idea of a tragic hero in a story. John Proctor would not confess to witchcraft simply to get out of death. He felt as though holding his dignity and integrity exceeded living in deceit. Despite the consequences he had to face, Proctor stood by his worth and beliefs. Tragedy lies in the inability for one to accomplish his or her desires due to unethical ways of others. The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is categorized as a dramatic tragedy, and all tragedies, by definition, have a tragic hero. So who is that hero? In this story, it would be John Proctor. According to Aristotle there are five characteristics of a tragic hero, he must have a flaw or error of judgement, he must cause his own downfall, he must recognize that he caused his own downfall, he must have pride, and his fate must be greater than he deserved. In this play, John Proctor has all of these characteristics.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor was accused of witchcraft. John Proctor was a man of great integrity and knew he did nothing wrong. He was given the choice to confess and lie or be hung. Being the honest and stubborn man that he was, he decided his name was more important than his life. John struggled both internally and with others while trying to fight for what he thought was right.
Goodness and nobility is determined by an individual’s morality and their willingness to follow a virtuous path in their life. It is also determined by the ability of an individual to acknowledge their shortcomings and become more self-aware. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is a good man as he showcases righteous morals and principles. This is shown, as he ends his affair with Abigail, protects his wife and his friends’ wives, and dies to preserve his integrity and honour. First, John Proctor shows his goodness, by refusing the physical advances of Abigail, who wishes to continue their love affair.
John Proctor, the protagonist of The Crucible, qualifies as a tragic hero because he has a tragic flaw, is ethically superior to the other characters in the play, and struggles to find peace with himself in midst of the lies and chaos during this play. John Proctor possesses a tragic flaw that forces him to hide his prideful mistake, which eventually brings about his downfall. I guess the old saying is true, “Pride comes before the fall”. John Proctor’s tragic flaw is his excessive pride, and he expresses it abundantly throughout the play. In Act I, it states, “ Proctor: Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time.
In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.

The answer to the question is shown through the characters, Giles Corey, John and Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams. John Proctor is a respected puritan man in the community. John had made the mistake of sleeping with, a teenage girl, Abigail Williams.
“He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him!” (1273) Metaphorically speaking, Proctor was put into a crucible, melted down, and came out in the purest form possible. John Proctor perfectly fits the role of a tragic hero because he has all the qualities of a tragic hero.
