When Jim Crow laws were introduced in the 1890’s it had a lasting effect on people of color socially, mentally, and their opportunities. Jim Crow laws were made in high favor of Caucasian people. Jim Crow laws were laws in the Southern United States that were state and local laws. These laws enforced racial segregation typically towards the blacks starting late in the 19th century. This was after the Reconstruction period, and were forced all the way until 1965. All public facilities were forced to be segregated in the states of the former Confederate States of America, which started back in 1896 with blacks having a “separate but equal” status. Segregation in public school was a thing all the way back to when it first established in most south after the Civil War.
“I 'm tired of being Jim Crowed, gonna leave this Jim Crow town, Doggone my black soul, I 'm sweet Chicago bound, Yes, Sir, I 'm leavin ' here, from this ole Jim Crow town. I 'm going up North, where they think money grows on trees, I don 't give a doggone, if ma black soul should freeze I 'm goin ' where I don 't need no B.V.D.s” (Jim Crow Blues, Davenport). The South offered little to no chance for advancement for rural blacks with the dwindling southern economy that once thrived on the backs of slaves after it came to an abrupt halt and pushed the oppressive, unfair restrictions on their lives in place, called the Jim Crow laws. With a sharp increase in the demand for labor in northern factories due to World War I, African Americans in the South and white factory owners from the North saw the chance for a mutually beneficial enterprise, that would later be referenced in history as The Great

The Jim Crow Laws were sadly an unbelieve event that took place in the 1800’s of American history. These laws targeted African American males, giving literary test and asking unreasonable questions about the U.S.A that many white males couldn't even answer, to many not able to read nor write causing many black males “unable” to vote. The Crow Laws also made segregation legal such as, white and black only schools and movie theaters. White schools, movie theaters, and etc,.. where far better than the African American builds which were often run down or poorly funded. You may think to yourself that it was so far back that in today's culture, those laws do not have any effect anymore, However you might be wrong.
It was a time when blacks were always regarded as inferior to whites and there were strict guidlines for black etiquette when interacting with whites. One example of the racial inferiority enforced by law during Jim Crow is that when driving, whites always had the right of way over blacks. When approaching an intersection with drivers of both races, blacks always had to yield to the white drivers, no matter how many there were. During the Jim Crow Era, lynchings of black men were fairly common around the United States, a common reasoning being that the man who had been killed had raped a white woman. In reality, many of the lynchings were in response to consensual, but illegal relationships between white women and black men.
As current time and social status are being challenged and pushed, the Jim Crow Laws were implemented. These state and local laws were just legislated this year, 1877. New implemented laws mandate segregation in all public facilities, with a “separate but equal” status for African Americans. This may lead to treatment and accommodations that are inferior to those provided to white Americans, systematizing a number of economic, educational, and social disadvantages.
These laws were placed to separate specifically blacks and whites legally but were also used to separate people by gender and class. The name “Jim Crow” comes from a minstrel show which was shows that made black people seem helpless and lost which was shown how they were played, “...wore shabby overalls, shuffled across the stage in bare feet, and carried a banjo.” (Tischauser 1). In Cullens's poem “Yet Do I Marvel”, this is represented especially when Cullen writes, “To make a poet black, and bid him sing!” (Cullen).

In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” (I Have a Dream speech ). Even today, African Americans are still treated unequally among other races. For example, African-Americans have a hard time finding a job such as not being qualified because of the color of their skin. As well, just because the color of their skin it has hurt some African-Americans for their future plans. Furthermore one of the biggest problems now and then African-Americans are treated unfair with police officers.
In black boy Richard Wright was taught that white people were dominant to minorities, which further diminished any opportunity of succeeding in such a prejudice time period. In doing so he was affected by political, economic and social segregation. Ever since this country was founded, there’s been a giant system of corruption and oppression. Race as an ideology was established in America when settlers came upon different-looking people and decided to pin labels based on impressions and appearances. Nowadays, when people think of slavery, they immediately identify that African-Americans suffered the worst, which I personally think is at least partially accurate. And nowadays, African-Americans are persecuted in terms of being incarcerated at mass volume. Michelle Alexander fiercely points out in ‘The New Jim Crow’ that the criminal justice system in America is basically like a “racial caste system”.
