Abstract On July 23, 1995, Janet Downing was found stabbed to death in her Somerville, Massachusetts home. With strong compelling evidence and creditable eyewitness testimony, Edward O’Brien was arrested for Downing’s murder. O’Brien was only fifteen years old and good friends with Downing’s son Ryan at the time of the murder. The first initial hearing judged that O’Brien would be tried as a juvenile, however this judgment would later be reversed. At a second hearing, a new judge ordered O’Brien to be tried as an adult, based on the severity and cruelty of his crime. In the fall of 1997 after a two week trial, Edward O’Brien was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Janet Downing. He was later sentenced to life in prison without parole for his vicious crime. At around 7p.m. on July 23, 1995, Ryan Downing, Edward O’Brien and some friends gathered at the Downing residence to pan out the evening’s events. As the fifteen year old boys discussed their plans, Ryan’s mother Janet was asleep on a living room couch. The boys decided to go swimming, however O’Brien excused himself by saying he was headed to Garvey Salomon’s house. A little bit later around 8p.m., Janet’s other son Paul visited the home briefly before he headed out for the night. At this time, Janet was still asleep on the …show more content…

Shockingly, as the top headline of the news spread worldwide, the world came in silence when Caylee’s skeletal remains were found on December 11, 2008 that were found with a blanket inside of a trash bag in a wooded area near the family home (Death of Caylee Anthony”). After recovering all of Caylee’s remains, investigators gave reports and a trial testimony explaining the duct tape that was found at the front of the skull and on the mouth of the skull. During the trial, the medical examiner explained that the duct tape was the main reason as to why Caylee’s murder was ruled as a homicide. The court trial lasted six weeks from May to July of 2011, the investigation and testimonies was a very important role in this case. Of course, the prosecution sought the death penalty since Casey murdered her daughter by administering chloroform and applying duct tape to her mouth and head.
I vividly recall my mother’s astonishment that I, as a 10 year-old, would be glued to the television set. The Casey Anthony case was aired for years, I was fascinated by how the law worked and the new facts that were discovered that threw the case to one side or another; I felt connected to this case because it was in my home state. My mom never grows tired of telling this story, and with every year passing I know she becomes more and more proud of the little girl who admired the men in blue suits on the screen and decided then she wanted to be a lawyer. I remember watching my mom gaze at me with an amazed look in her eye that I have now grown so fond of.

State vs. Mayfield Trial On December 27th, 1989, State Police Officer Edward Mayfield pulled over Donna Nugent to a shady area where he strangled her and threw her body off of a bridge. We don’t know why he pulled her over. He then proceeded to strangle her with a rope. I believe State Police Officer Edward Mayfield is guilty of murder in the first degree because he had and hid the murder weapon, pulling over specifically blonde women, and he changed the activity log.
Casey Anthony Trial Casey Anthony, who is now Twenty-Eight years old, was accused of murdering her two year old daughter, Caylee Anthony around June 2008. In 2011 the mother was acquitted of the charges of murdering her daughter. While researching for information on the case, I found that the young child had been missing for nearly a month before the mother had mentioned anything about her daughter missing. Casey’s mother, Cindy Anthony, called into the police the disappearance of her granddaughter, after Casey had made up several lies about where Caylee could possibly be. In this paper it will discuss the trial thoroughly from the lies, the evidence, and the verdict with more information from the trial.

Therefore, when a person argues that a juvenile was not aware of their crime is a discrediting claim. In 1990 in the city of Chicago, a couple expecting their first child were murdered in cold blood in the hands of a juvenile teen. The teen shot both the husband and the wife who pleaded for their lives and the life of their unborn child. Author of “Juvenile Justice Information Exchange”, Jennifer Jenkins states, “He reported to a friend, who testified at his trial, about his ‘thrill kill’ that he just wanted to ‘see what it would feel like to shoot someone’”. This killer was aware of his crime and was aware of who his victims were due to planning the murders months before.
Although the Diane Downs case involved a murder many mothers have chosen their romantic interest over their children. Many women who choose to neglect their children for men usually live in poor conditions such as when a single mother can’t provide for her family she will find a man who can take care of business within the household, usually when single mothers find men to take care of their families the men tend to be abusive and sometimes sexual to children. A mother’s neglect and unwilling to put the needs of her children before her own can turn into a vicious cycle of abuse and substance abuse to forget what the last family line did to them in the past. Male and female children handle neglect and violence in different ways, female children
