The Victorian era, as depicted in Jane Eyre, was a time of extreme gender inequality and households being dominated by the patriarchs. Although a prominent change in attitudes towards this social matter could be seen towards the end of the Victorian era, the question arose know as “The Woman Question”. This short essay will address it in terms of what is was seen as, why it was asked and why it was an important part of the women’s lives. As mentioned above, the Jane Eyre milieu was Victorian. The negative about the school was that she was publicly humilated by Mr. Brocklehurst and was forced to stand on a stool as he critisezed her. She tells Miss Temple the truth about her past and afte rfact checking with Mr Loyd, Miss Temple gathers all of the girls and clears Jane's name once and for all. Another positive thing that happned to her was she met a girl named Helen who she becma fast friends with.

For example, on the night of December 2, 1802, Austen was visiting Hampshire when Harris Bigg-Wither, a brother of Jane’s friend and a relatively wealthy man, proposed to her. Although Austen originally accepted the proposal, she changed her mind that night and left Hampshire abruptly.
Jane Austen’s works did not conform to the way that life was lived. She took what was normal in that time and changed it to what you should not do during that time. She was not a very successful author during her time due to the way that she wrote. Her works like Pride and Prejudice and Emma, are a few examples of how life was during that time and how Jane Austen changes the way that women were supposed to act during this time, such as being very submissive and always in want of a husband. Her life before writing was charming and shows that she had a good upbringing.
