Issues Under The Articles Of Confederation

In September 1777 on November 15th the Articles of Confederation were adopted by congress. This would be a decision that shaped america for better and worse. In essence the articles of confederation was created because a constitution was needed to link the 13 colonies of America. This planned backfired however, leaving the government and congress without power. Citizens of the U.S were quick to to ratify the Articles in 1779 on may 5th.

The Articles of Confederation was ratified on March 1, 1781. Without the Articles of confederation Congress felt as if we had a weak union and this would make it stronger. They were in debt and at a grave loss when it came to artillery for protection, produce to feed the hungry mouths and an idea as to why to do after they had fought for their now achieved independence. Also, the Articles portrayed this feeling of selfishness. The states could care less what their fellow neighbors were going through, as long as they were doing fine, that’s all that mattered. Finally, after nine years, the people realized how immense the unthoughtful articles impacted the nation as a whole. That’s why they began the Constitution with the infamous words,”We the People,” to emphasize that the nation is once again, a whole.

It was a consent among the 13 states of United States during the war of independence in 1776 where the Congress created a council to outline a document which was approved by it and was sent to the states for confirmation. After being approved by all the 13 states, the article of confederation came into action on March 1, 1781. All the power of the national government was centered in the Congress. And thus before the revolutionary victories in Village green in New England and the historical defeat of the almighty England in Yorktown in 1781, the now independent from Great Britain rebelling colonies realize from their historical experiences that a document of law needed to be crafted and established to preserve its new found independence, while maintaining order. There were many problems facing the nation during the Articles of Confederation; economic and political problems. These problems included disputes over western lands, currency, inflation, debt, foreign relations, and a weak central government. The disputes over western lands begun when Britain gave up their land claims to the lands east of the Mississippi River and north of the Ohio River. By the 1700s, almost 120,000 people lived west of the Appalachian Mountains, hoping that one day they could join the Union as a state. However, the Articles of Confederation had no provision for adding new states.

Did the Articles of Confederation resolve the problems that the colonists had under British rule? I think that they did resolve the problems. First off, there was no one person that took over the people. That helped a lot because they could be more free and they could do more of what they wanted.

Congress did not have the authority to create laws and states had to approve laws in order for them to be passed.
