• Marketing Issues- If nurses do not know about the nursing associations available to them how are they supposed to join? Professional nursing associations are rarely marketed to staff members, which can lead to decreased membership in the long run.
• Elevated Costs- “A major challenge faced by associations today is increasing their membership when current and potential members are careful in how they spend their money and time” (Huston, 2017, p. 390).
• Nursing Shortage- With there being a nursing shortage in the medical field today that means there are not as many people even available to join.

My research centers around Mexican immigrant women working as certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in Bellingham, Washington. As the first line of care in eldercare institutions, CNAs spend more time with residents than any other staff members, performing the most intimate tasks. Belied by its low-wage, low-status ranking within the industry, the work of a CNA involves a great deal of skill and interpretation of the clients’ needs. Interestingly, positive scores for eldercare facilities in Washington have been associated with the presence of more immigrant caregivers, with the indication that this may come from the “motivation and characteristics of the workers themselves” (Acker et al. 2015, 665)”
Due to budget cuts in Illinois, there are beginning to be a shortage of certified nursing assistants (CNA) in the nursing homes. CNA’s play a major role with providing basic care to patients and assisting with adult daily living activities. Basic care includes bathing, toileting, dressing, and last feeding. Feeding is a critical area for speech-language pathologist (SLP) in this setting. Issues affecting most SLP’s are the lack of responsibility following protocol with patient’s diet and delivering swallowing and aspiration precautions.

My biggest concern with improving quality care and patient safety issues in that, the responsibility is not ours alone, our Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) and Director of Nursing (DON), and senior nursing management staffs to lead the journey Disch J. (2008). I find it overwhelming that the majority of the research literature (studies, surveys and reports believe nursing plays the pivotal role in changing the face of health care and improving quality care and patient safety.
According to ANA's 1917 Certificate of Incorporation, two of the purposes of the organization are "...to promote the professional and educational advancement of nurses in every proper way; to elevate the standard of nursing education..." The association, however, did not take any significant action in this area until the 1960's when the association made a definitive statement on nursing education, A Position Paper on Educational Preparation for Nurse Practitioners and Assistants to Nurses. DevelopmentSometimes, a supervisor’s role takes a toll on the care that is received to residents by nurseassistants. These are full grown adults still needing someone to tell them what to do or how to doit when they fully know the right thing to do.
Groups like this are necessary to keep the profession expanding and developing, while trying to provide protection for its members. Through their policy initiative the ANA works to make sure the voice of the nurse is heard in government, and that they have what they need to provide the best patient care. The ANA also takes on big issues like antibiotic resistance and I believe it is very important that the ANA is placing emphasis on this issue, since nurses can play a major role in the solution, but are often overlooked. I hope that they continue to press for the inclusion of nurses in fighting this problem, as well as in other areas that the nurse’s abilities are under utilized. Due to hospital care reaching an all-time high in America, we need nurses now more than ever before. Currently in America, we have an issue with nurses having too many paperwork to fill out. In the article “We Need More Nurses” by Alexandra Robbins argues we need more nurses in the hospital. Nursing shortage has been a common issue throughout the world. Because of this issue others are being affected in many different ways.
D-The patient arrived on time for her session and informed this writer that she has decided to remain with the clinic as she learned on her own that no detox facility will accept her because she is testing negative and currently on methadone. The patient further mentioned that she is questioning as to whether or not her sister and her mother would help her as they said they would; however, the patient had a moment and looked back when her family did not help her as she struggled with her children. Furthermore, the patient reports, her sister did not give her the $80.00 for her rent. The patient reports that she had asked some guy for assistance. This writer addressed with the patient about her employment status and money management.

In order to provide quality care to the homeless population, the community health nurse is challenged to put aside her own preconceived opinions about drug addiction, alcohol abuse, mental illness and the assumed unwillingness to care for oneself. “While trying to help clients negotiate ‘the system’ the professionals may face a client’s noncompliance with medical regimes, drug abuse, and even stealing or selling medical resources” (Hunter, 1993, p. 139). According to Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, & O 'Grady (2016), the four spheres of political action in nursing are government, workplace, professional organization, and community. These four spheres play a significant role in opportunities for nurses to get politically involve. Government sphere focuses on laws and regulations concerning nursing practice, as well as reimbursements for healthcare, and influencing local, state, and national policies (Nault, 2012). Government can also determine what health services people are eligible for at certain age, and determines who receives what type of health services.
Nursing Shortage is a problem we all should be aware of. There are many factors that may lead to a nursing shortage, such as having stressful and unsafe working environments, and our nurses are being overworked. This is a problem we should be aware of because it is affecting the patient care. Nurses would not have enough time to stay with a patient if they have more patients to worry about. As a registered nurse, we face ethical issues every day. Some days we understand the clear cut ethical issue at hand; however, other ethical issues can be disguised. In my year and half of being an RN I have come across many ethical issues. As mentioned before, some are clear cut and others are hard to tread through. Initially, these ethical issues can make you question your job; however, after some reflection I believe these issues make us stronger nurses.

Societal Influences on Professional Nursing The nursing profession is an evolving field of work that shows no signs of stopping. With advancements in technology and education, the nursing profession must change in order to keep up with the rest of society. There are many changing societal factors that are influencing nursing as the year progress.
