Montressor is very prideful of his family linage and this is where we can understand his actions as he plans and carries out the killing of Fortunato. In the “Cask of Amontillado” Montressor is a very angry and vengeful man. He says that he was insulted by Fortunato, but fails to give a reason as to why or how. He begins to enact his revenge by luring Fortunato in with the rare wine and when his “friend” Fortunato is drunk, he t proceeds to bring him deeper and deeper underground, while telling him to turn around repeatedly. Once he reached a place where no one can hear them, Fortunato walked into what he thought was another corridor, but it would turn out to be his grave! For as soon as Fortunato hit the wall, Montressor chains him against it.

In order to have Fortunato follow him home, Montresor asks if he can help him decide if what he bought was an Amontillado. Fortunato has a weakness as a connoisseurship in wine, and agrees to help his friend. Secondly, Montresor continuously mentions how Luchresi could assist Montresor if Fortunato could not. This angered Fortunato, and pushed him to keep going.

The Revenge It in not easy for just anyone to get away with murder. In Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" Montresor shows his clever plan on killing Fortunato. Montresor murdered Fortunato while Fortunato was drunk. He took advantage of Fortunato and brought him down to a catacombs and chained him to a wall.

This attitude of Montresor showcases how little remorse he feels for Fortunato. He takes pleasure in the deception, knowing Fortunato remains oblivious to his sinister motives. This showcases the little guilt Montresor feels for taking advantage of Fortunato. He feels that everything he does is justified based on the actions of Fortunato earlier. Montresor also defends his actions by emphasizing that Fortunato seems to be a fool.

It is essential to consider these ideas while reading Poe’s story, in order to comprehend his views on revenge. Montresor was never clearly introduced as being mentally ill or insane, therefore he should be sentenced to his death. It is only fair that he is killed. In The Cask of Amontillado, it is proven that the men are drinking. Montresor could have been drunk, and if he was he wouldn’t have been in his right mind, but he still was sober enough to realize what he was doing and was able to follow through with his precise plan. He did offer Fortunato wine, knowing he would accept because he was prideful in his wine tasting.

In “The Cask of Amontillado”, Edgar Allan Poe displays the theme of revenge and manipulation. The narrator Montresor pledges revenge on Fortunato for an insult that is never explained. He maintains an appearance of goodwill towards Fortunato and decides to make use of Fortunato's weakness for fine wines against him. During the carnival season, the narrator approaches Fortunato, telling him that he has come across something that could pass for Amontillado a rare and expensive wine. Fortunato being excited about the news insists on accompanying Montresor to the vaults to determine whether it is Amontillado or not.

If you’ve read Edgar Allen Poe’s short story The Cask of Amontillado, you know how evil the protagonist, Montresor, is. He expertly carried out a disturbing scheme that left a man buried alive in the deepest part of the Montresor catacombs to die and rot, all for the sake of revenge. We know that Montresor is a very dark and disturbing character, as his own personality was based off of Poe’s. There is no doubt that Montresor committed a heinous crime of which would not be excused in today’s world. However, there are several quotes and pieces of textual evidence to suggest that Montresor might have done the people a favor by killing the not-so-fortunate “fortunate one.”

In this story, we observe how a character with such power and intelligence easily turns into a mad man who has devised a plan to murder an innocent man over a plebian conflict the two experienced. In one statement, Montresor says, “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe 1). In short, Montresor is implying that killing Fortunato is the fair thing to do and that he should be exempt from punishment for doing so. If I were to kill a classmate because he insulted me, I wouldn’t be exempt from punishment. Poe shows us that we can’t hold back our strange and uncivilized urges to get revenge on those who dishonor or hurt us.

Montresor’s family motto translates to: no one provokes me with impunity. Fortunato has insulted Montresor, which seals his fate in Montresor’s eyes. Once someone has insulted Montresor, that someone can expect punishment. The family motto confines Montresor’s mind into believing that Fortunato must be killed. Despite the lack of vindication for Fortunato, Montresor is bound to be affected negatively by the murder.
