Jedda Colonialism and Assimilation in Australian Film In this essay I will be exploring the themes of colonialism and assimilation and how it was represented throughout the 1955 Australian film Jedda, by Charles Chauvel; being the first Australian film that Aboriginal actors had taken on a protagonist role, even so far as to have the Aboriginal actors name appear first in the credits. The film is about a young Aboriginal girl, Jedda, who was orphaned as an infant and raised by the station owner’s wife, Sarah McMann. The woman was wanting to ‘civilise’ Jedda, teaching her to read and write in English, and how to play the piano instead of letting her learn the way of her tribal people by going on walkabout; finding bush tucker, and learning
Abbas Omar Ableiter WRIT 1301 Jan. 11th 2017 Christians and Cowboys: A Church on the Open Range There are many different interpretations of the bible. Some view it as inflexible in that the bible is to be strictly followed and abided by at all times. The Bronze Screen introduced both positive and negative portrayals of Latinas and Latinos in film. While there are plenty of positive Latino roles in films, Latinos and Latinas should be included in more positive roles because the negative roles Latinos have in films cause negative stereotypes. Positive and negative representations of Latinos in films has always fluctuated throughout history, however the more negative ones seem to always overpower the good ones. The film, “The Bronze Screen”, gave many examples of the negative roles Latinos played in films throughout film history. Early films included Latino actors, however they did not always have a lead role or even a positive one.
Lilies of the Field The movie, “Lilies of the field”, by Ralph Nelson is an inspiring film that covers tolerance, trust, and true friendship through its exploration of a most doubtful relationship. The story follows Homer Smith (Sydney Poitier) an ex-GI who has been traveling in his station wagon through the American Southwest, as he stumbles upon a challenging mission in the middle of the desert. The “challenging mission” Nelson gives him, is to learn to help five German, refugee nuns with chores around the house and more importantly, accomplish the dream to build a church with no funds, no equipment, and no volunteers.
“A huge hit in its native France, period drama Les Choristes sticks to a familiar songsheet: the one where a kindly teacher slowly but very surely wins over his urchin pupils. Yet even though all the notes are predictable, the film hits them with wit, warmth and gusto. Centred on the soaring sound of a boys' choir, this Oscar nominee may be a school of schlock, but if you're willing to submit, it'll charm your ears and toast your cockles.” A film review given by Matthew Leyland from BBC which shows to us what the movie is all about. Les Choristes is a 2004 German-Swiss-French drama film directed by Christophe Barratier.
Paul’s desire for success in assimilating into the higher-class mirrors Richard Rodriguez’s expanded “Scholarship Boy” by mimicking his mentors, Paul uses Trent Conway’s teachings by trying to “be like his teachers, to possess their knowledge, to assume their authority, their confidence, even to assume a teacher’s persona” (Rodriguez 552). Thus, Paul uses his ability to mimic and act like a scholarship boy by adopting the language of the dominate culture to blend into higher-class lifestyle. Trent Conway becomes Paul’s mentor by teaching Paul the mannerism and language of Trent’s peers at Harvard University and their families. Also, Paul repeated exactly Trent’s teaching to Rick and Elizabeth on adopting the language of

A low-context culture “uses language primarily to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas as clearly and logically as possible… The meaning of a statement is in the works spoken (Adler & Elmhorst,2008,p.47). A high-context culture, on the other hand “relies heavily on subtle, often nonverbal cues to convey meaning, save face, and maintain social harmony”.(p.47). James Carter’s straight-talking style proves for low-context culture. He always wants to get to the point in a quick way by asking direct questions.

The films An Diog is Faide and Fluent Dysphasia depict the struggle that Irish have to go through to preserve their old language (Gaelic). The film Fluent Dysphasia is about a native of Dublin who was hit with a football on the head, and wake up realizing that he doesn’t speak or understand English anymore, and becomes fluent in Gaelic instead. His daughter who was studying Gaelic becomes his translator, and explains his situation. Similarly, An Diog is Faide is based on the story of Sonnie Murphy who started from the bottom as a farm worker, but ended up competing in the Los Angeles 1932 Olympics, despite being told by his poor parents that “it’d cost a fortune to get you there.” Although the two films appeared to tell different stories, each film depicts the stereotype that Irish women and men are beautiful, and use such stereotype to preserve the Irish language and tradition.
Introduction: The process of communicating successfully with our family, friends, co-workers, business associates and people is one of the most critical skills. Communication is such a key part of life that I often tell to a person that “Its no use of someone if he/she really don’t know by associates people in their work place or area of field”. And, it is up to each of us to learn to communicate well with those who are important to us.
