Inhumanity Theme In Night By Elie Wiesel

In the memoir Night, the narrator Elie Wiesel recounts a moment when they were still being tortured in every way even after being evacuated. “The snow fell thickly. We were forbidden to sit down or even move (Weisel 92). Wiesel, the author shows how poorly the inmates were being cared for, treated worse than animals. As the author describes his experiences, many other examples of inhumanity are revealed.

One theme in Night is that inhumanity can cause loss of faith. In addition, Wiesel says that he’s noticing how much everything is changing. His memory is nothing like the present time. “What are you, my god? I thought angrily. People were at the point of not even believing Moshie. He would say things, beautiful things but the prisoners refused to listen. “ But people not only refused to believe his tales, they refused to listen” (Wiesel 7). You can just imagine how bad peoples minds were. Being a prisoner was just so horrible that not even a simple story could be heard. In order for Elie’s father to survive, he hurts himself by not feeding himself and feeding his old, weak father instead. Instead of eating his own food he gives it to his father because he would get beaten for his food. “Let me give you good advice: stop giving your ration of bread and soup to your old father. You cannot help him anymore. And you are hurting yourself. In fact you should be getting his rations…”(Wiesel 110). This kind act that Elie is doing for his father is costing him a lot.
