After reading “In Praise of the ‘F’ Word” written by Mary Sherry I can tell you first hand that she did an exceptional job using rhetoric to make the readers believe what she believes. Although she used all three, ethos, logos, and pathos, she mainly used ethos and pathos to not only get her point across but to also persuade the audience.
To begin, Mary Sherry used very little logos, but when she did she used it in a very powerful and effective way. In the very first sentence of the speech she says a shocking statistic, “Tens of thousands of eighteen year olds will graduate this year and be handed meaningless diplomas.” Using a statistic is a big attention-getter, but using a big number as a statistic really makes your audience listen. The placement of this statistic is also perfect. She used it at the beginning to make her audience listen from the, and it worked!

In the second paragraph she states, “Eventually a fortunate few will find their way into educational repair shops-adult literacy programs, such as the one where I teach basic grammar and writing.” This gives her a tremendous amount of credibility and expertise in this speech. Not only does she gain credibility by working in the education field, but she gains credibility because she works with the kids that have been failed by the education system. In the third paragraph she talks about how she found out first hand with her own son that when a teacher threatens to flunk a student they work harder and obtain the skills they need to
April 12th, 2015, Easter Sunday, in the LDS General Conference Jeffery R. Holland, Elder of Quorum of the Twelve Apostles bore his testimony of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Holland was born into the church, studied the Christianity faith, occupied as Institute teacher in the Church Educational System and was called to serve as an apostle by the prophet on June 23, 1944. Elder Holland testimony is bore to the members of the LDS church and non-members worldwide through the location of the meeting, television and radio broadcasting. Elder Holland's purpose was to give information and/or answer questions about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, also to explain how it can help us with returning to Heavenly Father in the highest celestial glory. Elder Holland uses the
Ethos: The author had an enthusiasm and believe that every deaf children in north America will be able to write by signwriting. Pathos: As a reporter and editor, the author showed credibility in importance of writing Logos: The author presented research, statistic data and personal
The poem “Dear Mom” by ____ is about a soldier who fought in the war writing to his parents about bringing home a “friend”, to which is his parents say no. It is later discovered that the soldier has commited suicide, presumably due to the unacceptance his parents showed. The poem uses pathos to evoke feelings of pity and sorrow from me, as well as rhyming and half rhyming to add emphasis and unpredictability. One key idea explored in the text is that the soldier’s “friend” is not human, but rather a representation of the trauma and suffering he has endured during the war - also known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
While Pyle believes that the Vietnamese are only spreading communism under orders from the Soviet Union, Fowler understands that they are choosing to take on a communist government because it suits their needs best. In a discussion with Fowler over the desires of the Vietnamese people, Pyle explains, “They’ll be forced to believe what they are told and won’t be allowed to think for themselves” (Greene 86). In this assumption, Pyle uses logos as a way of persuasion to convince Fowler that his idea is obvious. Pyle believes that the Soviets are controlling the Vietnamese, which is parallel to the United States’ idea that Ho Chi Minh was a puppet for Stalin. However, Fowler notices that the Vietnamese were chasing after their own interests, rather
Typically, when people think of the “F” word, they think of only one cuss word. In the article by Firoozeh Dumas, it does not deal with the a cuss word, it deals with the American society stereotyping different cultures in America today. Dumas uses several techniques to hook the readers and keep them reading and interested. Throughout the article, Dumas pairs together her style and how she builds ethos in the reader’s eyes. This creates a good way to convey the argument, however it lacks certain strengths.
In 1972, Shirley Chisholm stood before thousands of people and presented her presidential bid declaration speech. Chisholm uses all three of Aristotle’s persuasive appeals. Throughout Chisholm’s speech, she used logos, pathos and ethos. Logos is the appeal to logic in which reasoning and facts comes into play. Then pathos is the appeal to emotions in which she uses words to pull and the heart strings of her audience.
Pathos is the driving artistic proof in ceremonial rhetoric. Coretta Scott King was still mourning the death of her husband when he delivered this speech. During her speech, she references often to her husband. She targets her audience’s emotions at the beginning of her speech when she asks them to help strengthen her as she is getting through this tough time. The third artistic proof used is Logos.
We can infer that the author teaches a night class that is full of adults who wish they had put forth more effort and excelled earlier in life, but were instead passed on by teachers that didn’t foresee the troubles that it would cause for the student when put into the workforce. One of Sherry’s students says, “I was a good kid and didn’t cause any trouble, so they just passed me on even though I didn’t read or write.” This adds to the truism that as we grow older and mature, we learn to appreciate our education and the teachers that helped us along the way more and
The automotive industry uses advertisements and hundreds of types of persuasive techniques to sell you their vehicles. In the Ford advertisement that I chose, a large red truck is driving down the road during a rain storm. The words “It’s simple. BURN LESS FUEL. Burn less cash.”
The use of ethos, pathos, and logos in any type of writing or speaking can create a commanding and arresting effect on the reader/listener.
Rita Pierson, an educator of 40 years, as was her parents were as well as her grandparents. She appeals to educators on the issue of creating relationships with students, rather than just teaching a lesson she embraces each individual as a concerned educator. Being in a room full of educators means that she has to appeal to them in a way they want to learn. She does this by using powerful anecdotes to engage the audience. In the speech Every Kid Needs a Champion by Rita Pierson, she speaks to introduce, convince, and persuade educators that they should form relationships with their students due to higher academic achievement as well as self-esteem; she continues to use many rhetorical devices including soaps, ethos, pathos, and logos to achieve her argument.
The picture I chose, shows an image that is in the public eye of today’s society, the image of smoking and how people can be affected by it. In this picture, viewers can see how smoking can really affect one’s life and how the addiction can be harmful to not only the outside of the body, but also the inside. This photo shows a controversial side of the appeal that people become addicted to cigarettes and, even after trying to go cold turkey, some people still cannot get over the addiction. The first thing that is noticed is the noose. The noose is being wrapped around the woman’s neck comparing the cigarette to the noose in attempt to show death.
Women has greatly suffered in society from the beginning until now and no one seems to notice this prolonged issue that women have to endure in their daily lives. The media played a major role to how women are perceived in todays society. Nevertheless, in todays world more and more individuals are attempting to address the problem to solve this issue once and for all. Jennifer Newsom effectively convince her audience in an American documentary film: “Miss representation” to embellish the denigration of women in society and persuade the audience through the use of logos, pathos, and explicit visual images.
Rhetoric is a way of speaking in a persuasive way to create an impact on the audience or have them think the same way as the speaker. The three main strategies of rhetoric speech is ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos meaning the speaker is dwelling upon themselves, pathos meaning the speaker is using imagination to create emotion, and logos meaning facts and logic is used by the speaker to persuade the audience. Socrates used logos in a way that helped him exhibit an effective speech to prove which type of knowledge is worth knowing. In spite of this claim, Socrates was truly only showing the court that he really did not know much more than his name.
She would go on and explain and emphasize that having a good education was the key to being successful in life in all aspects. Even as I young adolescent, I knew what I had to do. I wanted to learn. It wasn’t easy for me at the beginning of my education because my first language wasn’t English, but I never gave up. Then came a time when I became more fluent and lost my accent, but I never lost my first language, and for that I am very thankful.
