In By Robert Frost: Nothing Gold Can Stay

Some people are insane, crazy, some might call them psychotic. Johnny Cade is the least psychotic person known in the book, The Outsiders. Johnny is a character from The Outsiders, this is a book based around a 1960’s gang war. There are 2 gangs and Johnny was a member of the Greasers gang. He murdered a member of the opposing gang they called the socs in defense of his friend Ponyboy and himself.

Thirdly, Johnny in the beginning was shy, he later became more outgoing. An example of this is when a group of kids were stuck in a church fire. He went in and helped them, he said,”Shut up” to the kids. To help them get out. Some key events that happened was when Bob, was drowning pony boy in a fountain.

Ch 9 Pg 148 “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…” The quote is significant by connecting to an Essential question because in Johnny’s last words he refrences the same Robert Frost poem that Ponyboy repeated outloud when they were sitting on the back porch of the church.

Ponyboy, a greaser, was one of the young boys that was matured throughout the book because of his hardships. Ponyboy 's relationship with his older brothers, Darry and Sodapop, is a key factor in how Ponyboy matured throughout the book. An example of Ponyboy almost maturing from the influence of Darry and Sodapop, is when their parents were killed in a car crash. When their Parents died it caused them to get closer and look out for eachother more (#3).

Johnny, the second youngest Greaser, gets jumped by Socs, and has feared them since the incident. Johnny, the loyal gang member, gets described as the gang 's pet. Yet, he still believed in doing the right thing and was the most law-abiding kid in the group. For example, one

That is a fact that no one can deny. He’s not like his brothers, Two-Bit, Dally, Steve, or anyone else. He is Ponyboy. The boy who likes reading, watching movies, and admires sunsets. Johnny told Ponyboy, in a letter, on page 178 that he should continue to watch sunsets because it was gold.

Johnny Cade, one of the members of the Greasers was born on March 1st, 1949 and sadly passed away in the year of 1965. The cause of his death was he went in a burning church and was burned and a broken back. One of his accomplishments was him saving the children. Johnny died from the cause of him saving children from a burning church. Dally was proud of him because he did a hero.

Johnny is kind and sensitive, but his parents don’t love him. He is also the pet of the group. What the setting does to the characters is that it affects how they behave. Also, since it is the poor side of town and that they are greasers they have to be violent and protective of others and of themselves.

Johnny probably had one of the worst lives of the greasers, yet he still managed to stay optimistic even after being beaten on an almost daily basis. Johnny would also stand up for people even after being isolated for most his life, as shown when Dallas was harassing Cherry and Marcia. Finally the most loyal of them all, even on his deathbed he stuck by his friends and only allowed them to vist and not his horrible mother that ignored him for most his life. “The Outsiders” is a novel written by S.E. Hinton. Originally Published in 1967, Hinton was only 18 when her novel hit the shelves. Instead of using her real name Susan Eloise Hinton, she used her initial’s so people wouldn’t know she was a girl making the book less desirable. The Outsiders is considered a cult classic and is typically assigned reading across the U.S. She always loved reading but did not like the books they had for young adults

Johnny is always kind-hearted in his intentions, despite how it turns out in the end. To illustrate his true virtue, when he becomes worried that his children have not seen enough of the world, he decides to “take them for a rowboat ride at Canarsie and do a little deep-sea fishing” (Smith 221). The trip ends up failing, as he falls in the water and one of the children becomes sick, but he truly intends for them to have an exciting new experience. If he is ill-meaning, he wouldn’t have even gone through the trouble of planning the trip. Similarly, when trying to relieve Francie of the discomfort she felt after her attempted attack, Johnny ends up chemically burning her leg.

At the beginning of the novel, Johnny lacked confidence and self-esteem. At times he thought about attempting suicide. S.E. Hinton describes Johnny as, “A little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and lost his crowd of strangers” (11). A clear sign of the gangs influence on Johnny was when he decided to prevent the Soc’s from drowning Ponyboy and defending himself instead of letting the Socs beat them up and have them possibly drown Ponyboy. More specifically, after finally fighting back and killing Bob, he says to Ponyboy “‘I killed him’ he said slowly. ‘I killed that boy”’(Hinton 56). Here the author is explaining how shocked Johnny was once he killed the Soc.

After that, Ponyboy finds himself in a situation that he personally can’t back out of. It’s the fire at the church. Ponyboy, starts running in to help save the children, but when he turns around, he sees Johnny. “Hey Ponyboy,” Johnny says. Johnny was following Ponyboy into the fire to help save the kids.

In this book report I will talk about the book “The outsiders” written by S.E. Hinton, I will do a review of the story, the point of view, theme, symbols and my opinion about this book I really liked to read for the English class. The story is about a boy named Ponyboy who lived in a small town in Texas with his two brothers Darry and Sodapop were a gang war was taking place between two different social class people: The Socs and the Greasers. Ponyboy will learn the consequences bad acts can bring to your life in the middle of a gang war. The greasers were a middle class and not so social kind of people who liked to get in trouble and The other gang The Socs were a most of them a high class or middle-high class group of people who where they went they will always go in groups of like three or four people.
