Professional Values That Underpin Nursing Practice

An example of how HDMC’s values and this nurses values are similar is observed in a service that HDMC offers called “Nobody dies alone” (Hi Desert Medical Center, 2015). The service acknowledges how difficult death is and that family is not always about to be with a patient. The service nobody dies alone has volunteers who come and stay with patients twenty-four hours a day and is there to support the patient during their ending moments. Privacy, dignity and humanity is respected and the patient is treated as a dying human in need of comfort rather than a person occupying a bed.

Every nursing, in order to consider the profession must have an understanding of at least three of the five professional values, in my opinion. These values consist of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity and social justice (Taylor 96). Beginning with the professional value of Altruism, the believe in or practice and self concern for the well-being of others (96). I believe that in order to be the best nurse you can be for your patients, you must understand the concept of altruism. As a nurse, your profession is to take care of people, if you do not know the professional value of altruism than you cannot possibly understand how important it is to care about the wellbeing of your patient.

From these realizations I have concluded that the professional nursing theories which most align with my own philosophy is a combination of Jean Watson’s theory of human caring and Rosemarie Parse’s theory of human becoming. Watson’s theory of human caring outlines the science behind caring as a driving force and framework for practice in nursing. It explores the concept that “humanities address themselves to deeper values of the quality of living and dying, which involve philosophical, ethical, psychosocial and moral issues” (Watson, 2005, p. 2). It is the person and their physical, emotional, and psychological needs that are the basic focus of nursing’s attention. In order to care for a patient, the nurse must incorporate all these needs. For example, providing reassurance with an anxious patient who just finished hip surgery. Care also plays a major part when taking care of a unique patient. Caring influences my personal philosophy because it is the most important aspect of nursing.

The way a person thinks about health, “whether that is our ‘philosophy’, our ‘worldview’, our ‘framework’ influences what we do as individuals in practice,” as well as how we deliver the health service. These elements allow us to think about healthcare in our own culturally acceptable way, this isn’t always an acceptable way of delivering the service to people with views different to our own. Cultural competence is an approach that aids in influencing the service and the education of healthcare professionals. (Taylor, K., & Guerin, P., 2010). Cultural competence is defined as a knowledge and understanding of cultures, histories and contemporary realities and awareness of protocols, combined with the proficiency to engage and work effectively in a cultural context congruent to the expectations of the people of that culture.

The ‘6C’s’ were launched by England’s Chief Officer Jane Cummings who believes that the ‘6C’s’ stand for the commitment of each professional to provide outstanding care for patients, with dignity and compassion while continuing to remain consistent as they achieve excellent health and wellbeing outcomes (RCNI, 2015). The ‘6C’s consist of, care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. However for this assignment the focus will lie primarily on courage, an important trait in life and in nursing practice (Dobos, 2015) .It allows us to be brave and do the right thing for the people that we are caring for (RCNI, 2015). Being courageous helps nurses identify poor practise and speak up reinforcing strategies to increase the best standard of care for patients.

Introduction: This assignment will explore the Roper, Logan and Tierney model used in first clinical placement and will explain how it helped to guide nurses to focus on the fundamentals of patient care. Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be.
