Immnization Saves Lives Rhetorical Analysis

Petts and Niemeyer explore the controversy debate on what affects people from not getting their children vaccinated. They did a poll on who gets their children vaccinated and who does not get their children vaccinated. One factor Petts and Niemeyer discuss is why people are second guessing getting vaccinations for their children. The media has presented information, which led to false reports, although parents are acting upon these messages in which change their beliefs in vaccinations. Media has since affected the idea of vaccinations, parents are beginning to look into the vaccinations and predict if they will be mandatory or not for their children.

In his book, Deadly Choices: How the Anti-Vaccine Movement Threatens Us All, Paul A. Offit, M.D. presents us with a thoroughly in-depth look behind the veil of the vaccine controversy. Specifically here in the United States. Offit starts us off with the history of vaccinations giving insights into not just their creation but the controversy that has surrounded them since the beginning. We learn how these questions around safety and personal rights started and who have been the major decision makers in history. We hear about the groups and people that support vaccinations and those that do not.

Requiring vaccinations is a highly debatable topic in the United States today. An article by Ronald Bayer, “The continuing tensions between individual rights and public health,” is one of the most reliable sources in the case study. The author has a PhD from the University of Chicago and focuses his research on issues of social justice and ethical matters. Bayer has also previously been a consultant to the World Health Organization on ethical issues related to public health. This makes him very knowledgeable about the topic and a highly credible source.

Edmund Burke once said, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it” (“History Quotes” par. 23). There is something to be said about a civilization that does not analyze its past flaws to correct it future mistakes. By not studying the past, both the laudable and the unmentionable, there is no way for a person, country, or race of people to avoid making similar errors as a result of ignorance. Examining history provides each generation with the tools for it to construct its own values, opinions, and solutions to essential humanitarian, political, economic, and social problems. However, sometimes analyzing history is not enough, especially whenever its warnings are largely ignored or underestimated.

James R. Baker, MD and chief medical officer of Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), writing an article for the STAT Magazine, discloses information regarding the pharmaceutical drug pricing controversy, in his case EpiPens, that affects many middle-classed Americans. By using the appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos, Baker presents a viewpoint that is antagonistic of the business practices pharmaceutical companies have been following for the last decade. One of the ways Baker acknowledges their argument is by appealing to the emotion of his audience with his introductory sentence that shows how parents are forced to make hard choices surrounding the health of their children. “All too often, parents of children with food allergies are forced to make hard choices. Finally, the final essay! For this last essay, I have decided to explain 3 rhetorical devices in a song. The song I chose is called “Bullet to the Heart” by Jackson Wang. This song is about finding out someone isn’t who you thought they were. Jackson portrays this in his song by using allusion, exaggeration, and metaphor.

The way that St Jude’s Hospital brings about pathos is by making people feel sympathetic towards the children influencing them to donate money for their well-being. As previously mentioned, Robin introduces the three young boys and gives the audience an input as to what it is that they suffer from. He introduces the three young boys by their names, Charlie, Zach, and JB, which helps forms a personal connection with the audience now that they know their name. When Robin tells the audience that the three boys suffer from brain tumors it makes the audience feel sympathetic towards them, because they cannot help but think that children should not suffer from the horrible illness that is cancer. There are 1.3 Billion people in the world who live on less than $1.25 a day, this is significantly less than what we spend in one meal. 22,000 children die every day due to poverty related illnesses. These are tragic numbers that we don’t even think about when walking down to lunch. Philosopher and Utilitarian Peter Singer wrote “The Life You Can Save” an entire book about this exact issue, and how we the privileged American people can help, and how we should help these people who are meaninglessly dying. Some argue against Singers Utilitarian view, and many come short.

On the other hand, Bihr gains an audience related advantage of safety values when she addresses the topic of protecting children from harm; Bihr explains that administering vaccines helps protect children from illnesses like the influenza virus or rotavirus. Researchers Ferdinands et al. (2014) found that the “…influenza vaccination was associated with about a three-quarters reduction in risk of influenza-related critical illness in children… Our results highlight the value of increasing the use of influenza vaccines among children” (Ferdinands et al., 2014, p. 681); while Dr. Cave’s (2014) piece, Adolescent refusal of MMR inoculation: F (mother) v F (father), adds that “A global vaccination campaign has led to a 71 per cent drop in measles-related deaths between 2000 and 2011, making a huge impact on the death rate which was estimated at 2.6 million deaths per year in the 1980s” (Cave, 2014, p. 631).

During my years of being a scholar most of my writings have come mainly from research papers. My teachers would either assign a research topic or you could choose your own. Sometimes we even got readings or books that we would have to read and write a paper on. This past semester I took English 1001 and typed papers I had never learned to do before and I also learned how to do an annotated bibliography. These papers were papers like visual and rhetorical analysis.

A person is given a shot once for these diseases and seldom need another shot. Health agencies are now able to make statement such as the eradication of Small Pox, Polio and Measles (College of Phycisian of Philadelphia, 2015). The efforts toward polio and measles eradication in the Americas have been possible only mainly because there was a very high level of political commitment and collaboration among governments of the region (Knobler, Lederberg, & Pray, 2002).

Modern medicine provides people with the ability to protect themselves from the world’s most fatal diseases. Merely a century ago, it was not uncommon for a child to die as a result of diseases such as polio, pertussis, and tuberculosis. Today, it is highly unlikely for a person to contract these diseases, let alone die from them. However, refusal of vaccinations has been increasing throughout the years due to the anti-vaccination movement. This movement declares mandatory vaccines unconstitutional and vaccinations overall as the cause of autism.
