The life and travels of Ibn Battuta are phenomenal despite being not well known. Ibn Battuta (full name Abu 'abd Allah Muhammad ibn 'abd Allah al-Lawati at-Tanji ibn Battuta) was born in the Moroccan city known as Tangier in 1304. Morocco is located in North Africa where the main religion was Islam at the time. He was born into a very scholarly family and many of his relatives and ancestors became judges or worked in the legal field. Battuta was a very faithful and dedicated follower of Islam. As part of the Islam religion, all Muslims are encouraged to make a pilgrimage (or hajj) to Mecca, the holy city of Islam. This is three times the distance of the Earth around the equator. When his time traveling was finished, Battuta had all of his observations recorded. The record of his observations (known as the Rihla) help historians today understand the customs and cultures of countries during the fourteenth century. He is often compared to other renowned world travelers, for example Marco Polo, that are often more recognized than him. From this city he crossed the Straits of Gibraltar to Spain, which at the time was still Muslim territory. Later he returned to his native continent of Africa and trekked over the Atlas Mountains and crossed the Sahara Desert. The Trans-Saharan trade network was a vital factor in the affluence of Western African civilizations. In Document A, is a map of Ibn Battuta’s journey through various trade routes spreading through multiple continents during the fourteenth century. Small pictographs are drawn on the map to display the aspects of each culture that Ibn Battuta visited (Doc A). The map illustrates the extent of the Trans-Saharan Trade Network and how it connected West Africa with other regions across the globe.

Mansa Mūsā was an emperor of the West African empire of Mali. He ruled from 1307 to 1312 and did many remarkable things during his ruling such as building The Great Mosque at Timbuktu. In the Middle East and Europe, he is best known for his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1224. Sundiata, Mansa Mūsā’s grandson or great nephew, founded his dynasty and was also a West African monarch who founded western Sudanese empire of Mali. He lead the path for Mansa Mūsā to become emperor in 1312 and also helped him with his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324.The world was awakened to the marvelous wealth of Mali due to the pilgrimage.
