I Survived Hurricane Katrina Essay

In the book A.D New Orleans After The Deluge, By Josh Neufeld is about Hurricane Katrina and how it affected the people of New Orleans. This book was about real people that escaped and lived through the storm. Most people lost everything including their houses, all personal belongings, and jobs. As I was reading the book was shocked that in the beginning most of the characters were not worried about the storm they just wanted to wait it out. No one was expecting such a big storm and thought it would turn east like they normally did.

In the Wake of Hurricane Katrina Dave Eggers in his non-fiction book Zeitoun tells the story of Hurricane Katrina from the eyes of a Syrian-American family, the Zeitoun, who were living in New Orleans during the storm. Zeitoun, who is a father of four and a contractor, devoted his life for his hard work by serving the community of New Orleans. Zeitoun showed tremendous bravery during the Hurricane Katrina. He rescued many lives, including abandoned dogs at the time of the hurricane. The government response to the storm was very slow at that time and there was a lack of preparedness at all levels.

The book “Zeitoun” written by Dave Eggers focuses on Zeitoun and Kathy a muslim couples point of view on Hurricane Katrina and how muslims were treated in the 21st Century. He expresses his feelings about how muslims were treated in the 21st century by appealing to ethos, pathos, and logos. Dave Eggers interviewed Kathy and Zeitoun and did research for years before he officially published the book “Zeitoun” which appeals to ethos because he is giving credit to himself by citing his resources and research. In the book “Zeitoun” Eggers persuades us that Abdulrahman Zeitoun was a hero during the hurricane katrina by giving credibility to what Zeitoun had done to help his community. Hurricane Katrina occurred on August 29th 2005, In New Orleans.

Additionally, scientists had been warning New Orleans and the government that climate change would lead to increased storm activity and that the city’s defenses weren’t strong enough for such a storm. However, these warnings were ignored by the government and no preventative measures were taken which has influenced the effects of the storm. The reason for the poor response of the government and their negligence of the warnings is arguable. However, it is positive that the reason for this is that the majority of the people affected were the poor, and mostly colored, citizen of New Orleans. The city is racially and economically segregated and these citizen lived in the lower parts of the city, which go down to 11 feet below sea level.

Finally they explain what steps they believe that should have been taken in order to help the citizens of New Orleans. They explain that the federal government non ability to handle the health care crisis especially when they had the chance to show the world the power of the United States. They first suggest that President Bush could have better distributed funds to the affected area and people by better supporting clinics running. Also they could have helped prevent the mental health care problems that would have followed the disaster through giving those in need access to mental health care. They also show how the 5 month period to get those in need as too long and the government should create an emergency Medicare system that can be called on incase of disaster.

Katrina did the normal thing she got married and started a family Katrina has almost no economic support. Katrina uses food stamps and has access to a discounted childcare facility. However in the documentary a situation arises where she is not able to us her food stamps and has to ration for about a week and ask her ex husband for help. Katrina is extremely fortunate to have access to the discounted childcare facility because it has a wait list upwards of one hundred kids.

It was 6:10 in the morning August 28 2005 and New Orleans had just been struck. Homes were being demolished, people were screaming, innocent people were getting killed from the result of the storm surge. . To this day there are 705 people still missing. While people are living there normal lives, they have not yet to know that in the middle of the Atlantic warm air is rising and it is getting replaced by the cooler air. the Not to forget, the hurricane affected their economy because of $81 billion dollars of property damage.

Furthermore, the utilization of response to address life safety, incident stabilization, property preservation and social-economic impacts continue to play a role in emergency response lessons learned taught today. Response Comparison: Hurricane Katrina

Since 80% of the city was flooded, tens of thousands of people went to the Convention Center and Louisiana Superdome for shelter. But help arrived extremely slowly and soon conditions became unsanitary and endangered the people. People suffered from hunger, the heat, and the lack of medical attention. The city was in shreds and there was nowhere to go for most people as the majority of New Orleans was just above the poverty line before the hurricane

City-assisted evacuation is pick up location through out New Orleans to bring people to shelters set up outside the city. I have lived in New Orleans almost all my life and hurricane Katrina was my very first time evacuating with my family. Trying to make an insurance claim without a policy number is impossible and applying for assistance without a social security number or birth certificate is also impossible. I now keep my family important document is a plastic folder year round, so if there is ever a threat of a hurricane or tornado, I can grab it and go, and if I forget it home it is protected from water damage.

Katrina recorded top wind speeds of one hundred miles per hour and spread across four-hundred miles. Massive floods occurred in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, as well as, widespread damage recorded in Georgia and Florida. In all, Hurricane Katrina killed over two thousand people, damaged approximately ninety thousand square miles, and is currently the most costly natural disaster in US history at one hundred and forty-five billion dollars. As expected, the local and state governments were overwhelmed by this cause of events, especially dealing with the limited resources and political climate that surrounded the aftermath of Katrina.

In the book, The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast author Douglas Brinkley takes you on a journey through the political corruption and under calculation of the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina’s effects. He starts off the essay with his own personal account of the damage that Hurricane Katrina left. From there he moves into stories of other people from Louisiana and their evacuation stories. These stories ranged from animal shelters from multiple days prior, to stories about people who were just planning to wait it out.

The characters, specifically Esch, Skeetah, and Daddy, who live in rural Mississippi, must not only prepare for and survive Hurricane Katrina as a literal hurricane but also their own

Before the First World War, the Red Cross introduced its “first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs” (Who is Clara Barton, 2008) In regards to natural disasters, they provided relief for the Great Depression during the 1930s and also the during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which was the largest Red Cross Response in it’s history. Here they provided millions of people with food, shelter, and money to get back on their feet, emotional support, etc. Their first congressional charter was received in 1900 and the second in 1905. Then their third was adopted in May 2007 which “restates the traditional purposes of the organization” which includes being a form of communication between those in the American armed forces and their families as well as providing an international and national disaster relief and mitigation (Who is Clara Barton, 2008).

More than 3,600 homes were destroyed on Galveston Island and the added toll on commercial structures created a loss of $30 million, about $700 million in today 's dollars.” While the storm was extreme, so was the response of the survivors. Despite the unimaginable devastation the survivors faced, they immediately began rebuilding their city. By 10 a.m. Sept. 9 the Mayor of Galveston, Walter C. Jones had called an emergency city council meeting, and by the end of the day had appointed a Central Relief Committee. The newspaper even continued to publish from Galveston and never missed an issue.
