The Hudson’s Bay Company was established in 1670 by Price Rupert, cousin of King Charles II. King Charles II created the Royal Charter which granted the lands of the Hudson Bay watershed to the Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson Bay. Throughout the first two hundred years of its operations, the Hudson’s Bay Company had been prevalently interested in the fur trade in North America. The search for new fur supplies and exploration led to an increase in expansion of the company in all directions from the shores of Hudson Bay; however, by the end of the nineteenth century, the fur trade in Canada was coming to a close.
