In Harper Lees, To Kill A Mockingbird, the lawyer who is a single father is a just and right individual that is concerned with doing the right thing. Atticus is always setting the correct example for his children by doing what is right surrounded by a town of prejudice. Atticus is a respected man in the town of Maycomb but he is instantly viewed as an outsider when he defends Tom Robinson, a black man who was wrongly accused. Atticus is a role model for everyone because of how wise and bold he is as a man. Atticus is also a kind man who loves his family more than anything. Atticus was spat in the face by Bob Ewell and threatened. After the matter, Atticus just lived his life like he normally would: “Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life” (Lee 217). Atticus was publicly threatened and spat at but he remained calm and carried on. Atticus is faced with a trial defending a black man in the racist town of Maycomb which believes that Atticus should let the man go to jail. However, Atticus did not succumb to the town he defended Tom Robinson as best as he could: “I’m simply defending a Negro-his name’s, Tom Robinson” (Lee 75). Even while the whole town was opposed to Atticus defending this man he did what was right. He defended the man that everyone assumed was guilty because of their prejudice about his skin color. Tom Robinson was being charged with rape and everyone in the town was against him. Atticus saw the injustice and did his best to defend Tom. “... if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature” (Lee 75). Atticus is explaining to Scout why he couldn’t leave Tom without any help. Atticus is always looking out for his children. By being strong in his belief of what's right, Atticus is a true role model. When Scout and Jem are lost Atticus is there to give them advice and take care of them. “His hands were under my chin, pulling up the cover, tucking it around me” (Lee 281). Atticus is a loving father that wants to take care of his children. “Depends on how you look at it, what was one negro, more or less among two hundred of ‘em” (Lee 235). Atticus is putting himself in everyone's shoes to show his children that not everyone goes through the same things Atticus always puts others first. He puts himself in the shoes of those he talks about so that he understands what it's like to be them. Atticus is showing his children that everyone has a different
