Atticus is appointed a case by Judge Taylor to defend a black man named Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping a white girl named Mayella Ewell. Because of the racism and prejudice against black people, he believes that he will not win this case and could risk the life of Tom Robinson. Because of this case, Scout gets bullied by Francis about how his dad is defending a black man, Atticus later talks to Scout about how “[Tom Robinson] lives in [a] settlement behind the town dump….there’s been some high talk around the town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man” (Lee 86). Atticus knows that something bad can happen to him if he were to defend Tom Robinson but still does so because he has the courage to do it. After the trial had ended, Atticus was waiting for news but he did not expect something so terrible and heartbreaking, Tom Robinson, unfortunately, died after being shot several times.

Atticus is Scout’s father and a lawyer who demonstrates the values of compassion, thoughtfulness, honesty, and morality, “I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help.” (109) Atticus symbolizes courage for Tom Robinson through the values that make Atticus an outstanding defender. This is why “the court-appointed Atticus to defend him [Tom Robinson].” (166) Atticus believed that everyone, black or white should be given a chance to be proven not guilty. Atticus knew it was “the right thing to do at the time.”

Atticus demonstrates courage because he fights for what he believes is right, and stands up for people. Atticus was the main character, and the father of Jem and Scout. He was known for his morals, and strong opinions on justice and equality. This is shown on page 30 when Harper Lee writes, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 30).

He also makes an effort to not listen to how other people parent their children given their time period by continuing to do what he thinks is best for his children. This teaches them that they should always put themselves into a different perspective before being quick to assume. In the end, Atticus proves to become an influential role model in developing new understandings and lessons for his children.

Jem further understood the true meaning of moral courage when he saw Atticus defending Tom Robinson, a black man. Although Atticus was hugely outnumbered and even cornered by Mr Cunningham and some other people, he did not back down from them. Instead, he seemed even more determined to win the case and prove Tom Robinson 's innocence to all of Maycomb County. Almost everyone in Maycomb County had criticised Atticus and his children for taking up the case of defending Tom Robinson and they were even called "nigger lovers" by many. At first, Jem did not understand why his father chose to defend Tom Robinson when he knew that people would whisper and gossip about it and that the possibility of him winning the case was very low.

He is a character that finds just the right words to advise to his children just as any great parent would do. These parents make their children’s problems a priority to fix and make sure that these issues are solved right away as if they were their own problems. This is exactly what Atticus does in the book as a very successful and smart parent. For example, when Scout runs into a problem, to solve the problem she always thinks that violence is the answer, however this is not the way Atticus thought that she should approach every situation. He told Scout that she will never understand a person fully or even get along with that person until she considers things in their point of view or in other words walk in their shoes.

Atticus knows that “there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that [he] shouldn’t do much about defending [Tom Robinson]” (100). However, even though his family and friends my disagree, may even think less of him, Atticus’ interaction with this case gives his cause to think greater of himself because he is fighting for what he believes in. This kind of situation is difficult when you’re opposing you’re enemies, but even harder when you are up against your friends. Even so, Atticus on the path he knows is right, risking his popularity and status among the town. Atticus tells Scout, “you just hold your head high and keep your fists down.

Atticus became not only a role model for Scout and Jem but a role model for the whole town. He taught you not to be so quick to judge everything. From Boo Radley to Walter Cunningham, he shows how to accept people for who they are and to get know them before you judge them. “Because that is they only way he can pay me, he has no money” (Lee 21). When Scout saw the Cunninghams paying in different things like Hickory nuts and Stovewood, she was quick to question the payment.

Although he is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, Atticus does his best to prove Tom’s innocence, despite the ridicule imposed on him and his family. When Scout asks why Atticus is defending Tom he responds with, “For a number of reasons… The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee 100). This shows that Atticus has a strong sense of righteousness and will affirm to what is right.

He gives clear, strong examples of what is right and what is not.
