How Has Jem Finch Changed

Even though Atticus Finch doesn 't discipline his kids, so they sometimes disrespect people, he makes his kids accept people no matter what, Atticus cares about his kids, but Atticus does not change who they are as a person. because, and he teaches his kids right from wrong. He was a great father because he guided on the morally correct behaviour which was difficult in their time. Atticus Finch makes his kids Scout and Jem accept people no matter what they do.

On page 304, Jem says, "… If there’s just one kind of folks, why can’t they get along with each other? If they’re all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise each other? Scout, I think I’m beginning to understand something. I think I’m beginning to understand why Boo Radley’s stayed shut up in the house all this time…

After Tom Robinson’s trial Jem talks to scout about how "if there's just one kind of folks, why can't they get along with each other? If they're all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise each other?"(Lee 162). Jem realizes that not everyone is treated the same whether it be because of their skin, like Tom, or the way they act, like Boo Radley. He's learning that people are treated differently even though all men are created equally. Jem is coming of age and realizing the world is not the same as he had once seen.

Atticus gives Scout a tip to get along with others. In the book, Atticus says, "... You never really understand a person until you consider things in his point of view-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. "(Finch, pg. 39). Scout realized what Atticus meant when he was talking about empathy from the Radleys' house.

He realized Boo Radley had no intentions of harm; he just wanted to give the kids some gifts. “Atticus ain't ever whipped me since I can remember. And I want to keep it that way”(75) This shows Jem’s perseverance to perform actions that will benefit him in a positive way. Which speaks on the first quote on how he has changed for the better and just wants to be the best person he can be.

Jem has been influenced by rumors of Boo Radley and believed Boo was a monster. However, Jem loses all of these prejudices when he accepts the gifts that are left in the knothole by Boo. As a result he begins to believe Boo is a kind person and even admits that “... he[Boo] ain’t ever harmed us, he ain’t ever hurt us…”(96). Feeling like Boo is seeking attention, Jem attempts to give him a note to ease his loneliness. Jem had thought that the Maycomb population was “good folk” and confidently believed that the community members would do the right thing and let Tom Robinson go (Lee 184). However, to Jem’s surprise, most of the jury had voted against Tom Robinson, even though evidence that he was innocent was undeniable. This leads Jem to start questioning the morality of Maycomb and shows Jem how prejudiced and racist Maycomb truly was, essentially creating a loss of innocence in Jem. Due to the results of this court case, Jem starts to lose his trust in people and learns that, in reality, Maycomb was a racist and biased society. The heat was devastating and many people decided to not go outside. Jem and I, however, ignored Atticus ' warnings about the heat, and left to go to see Dill. They learn a lot about courage throughout the novel from their father Atticus and what they learn from him influences their choices and opinions. Although Jem is older than Scout, they both experience change in their behavior. At the beginning of the novel, Jem is still a young boy. He is defiant towards Atticus, he plays all the usual childhood games with Scout and Dill, and he engages in the younger children’s obsession with Boo Radley.

And eventually, after Boo saves Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell, and she takes him home, Scout realizes that “... Just standing on the Radley front porch was enough (Lee 374),” for her to see through Boo’s eyes. She finally begins to understand Boo and why he acts the way that he does. Ultimately, teaching her that she shouldn’t listen to rumors or judge someone simply because they are different. The town of Maycomb is a perfect setting for To Kill a Mockingbird.
