The author’s purpose is to make the statement that deep beneath all of us there is an element of evil. He used innocent schoolboys and by the end of the book three kids were dead and only one kid which was being hunted down ( Chapter 12) was sane by the time they were being rescued.

Ralph is the chief of the tribe on the island. He has “fair hair” (page 1) and he is an attractive boy which is part of the reason he was chosen chief. His main objective is being rescued. A major theme that was throughout the book was loss of innocence. Ralph, Piggy and the others lose their innocence by murdering Simon on page 152. They have blood on their hands that they can’t wash off. Simon use to go to the forest glade in chapter 3 because it was a paradise of peace and calmness but when Simon returned to his haven the peace was destroyed. There was the bloody sow’s head impaled upon a stake in the middle of the clearing. The bloody offering to the beast has disrupted the paradise that existed before—a powerful symbol of innate human evil disrupting childhood innocence. On page 181 Piggy was murdered by a boulder Roger pushed. Roger in chapter twelve is so different from the innocent boy he once was. Now he has two murders on his hand.
