The use of imagery in Hamlet enhances the dialogue and scenery in the play. William Shakespeare uses conflicts between countries, relationships and, families to make the play more suspenseful and to cause more tension. Without the use of imagery that William Shakespeare uses in Hamlet, the play would be very bland and not be one of the great plays in history like it is. In the first act, Shakespeare uses deep imagery to describe the condition of Denmark. "There is something rotten in the state of Denmark." The quote describes how corrupt Denmark was at the time and another thing it could mean is how the marriage between Claudius and Gertrude is not right. Their marriage came at a very suspicious time, only two months after the Kings death. …show more content…
In Act 1 Hamlet says "frailty, thy name is women" (I.ii.146). He is demonstrating his despise of his mother Gertrude 's actions by marrying Claudius shortly after the king or her husbands death. Throughout the play we see that Hamlet has disgust with his mother for her lack of character and strength. Shakespeare uses good imagery throughout the play while describing Hamlet and Gertrude’s odd relationship, which makes the interactions between them two much more interesting. Another relationship is the one between Ophelia and Hamlet. The descriptions of their relationship make the dialogue between them very tense. Their relationship is not that stable and is kin of weird. Hamlet claims that he once loved her, but a moment later he tells her that he never loved her. While he is attempting to act crazy in Act 2 he grabs Ophelia, stares at her for a while, then lets out a long sigh. They can 't seem to have a normal conversation. Ophelia also has a lack of strength and independence. Shakespeare shows this through her relationship with her brother and father. She obeyed her father when she rejected Hamlet and his letters. She is also used as "bait" for spying on Hamlet on two different occasions. Throughout the play William Shakespeare uses great imagery and descriptions to create tension, suspense, and conflicts between friends, families, and relationships. Without the use of those, Hamlet would not go down as one of Shakespeare’s most popular and well known
We see Ophelia torn between her desire to be near Hamlet or pleasing her father and her brother. This clearly represents a massive internal conflict to Ophelia. Especially when she has been ordered by her father to stay away from Hamlet. Then, He ordered again to be the bait for Cladius who 's want to snoop on her conversation with Hamlet. Hence, Ophelia placed for the second time in a difficult choice, She must choose between her loyalty to her father or her loyalty to her lover
When Ophelia returns all his letters and gifts he tells her that he has never loved her and that she should “get thyself to a nunnery.” This is one example how his mood changes throughout the play. Then after all this her father, Polinous, is murdered by Hamlet. The Hamlet is sent away to England All of these actions result in her feeling such stress that she becomes insane in the end.
Also, Hamlet displays his anguish at the Queen for dishonouring his dead father since “Almost as bad, good mother, as killing a king and marrying his brother” (Shakespeare, pg. 121). In this statement, Hamlet expresses how, through the marriage to her husband’s murderer, Gertrude is a symbol of dishonor and damaging her relationship with the prince. Hamlet is disgusted by Gertrude’s actions and recognizes her not as his mother but the queen and wife of Claudius, the murderer. The respect revered by children to their mother is not evident between Hamlet and Gertrude. In Gertrude’s death scene, Hamlet screams to his mother “Wretched Queen, adieu!”
Hamlet is a powerful story of love, life, revenge, and death. The themes within the play are written to live on for eternity. It is difficult to fully and accurately represent a play as great as this one. The movie that we watched in class did not wholly represent the wonders and the magnitude of the themes within Shakespeare’s work.
Shakespeare’s use of language helps to portray the major theme of deception in the play Hamlet. The utilization of diction helps to equate Claudius to an evil person, while metaphors help to make the comparison between Claudius and a deathly animal. By making comparisons and using specific word choice that help support the theme, Shakespeare is able to portray the deceitful antics of King
Hamlet views Ophelia as a naive and ignorant girl who is nothing but Polonius and Claudius's puppet. This was revealed when Hamlet said "God has given you one face and you make yourself another. . You jig and amble, and you lisp, you nickname God's creatures and make your wantonness your ignorance." (III, i, 143-146) In this quote Hamlet knows that Ophelia is spying on him for Polonius and Claudius.
Ophelia is grieving the loss of her father after Hamlet kills him. Ophelia doesn't know that Hamlet killed her father. But Ophelia has gone mad from learning about her father's death. Also, after Hamlet telling Ophelia that she needs to go to a nunnery, Ophelia is a little bit discouraged. She is discouraged because Hamlet had told her before that if Ophelia would sleep with him that they would get married.
Michael Olufunsho Fafemi Alan Rosiene HUM 2052 February 6 2018 Hamlet, The Claudius similarity and Machiavellism Shakespeare through the play Hamlet portrays many complex themes through the various characters in the play. Hamlet, the protagonist is in particular a mesh of various complexities and ideas. He is often caught in between his own opposing characteristics and these ultimately affect the course of his actions.
In the Tragedy of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, some of the most significant events are mental or psychological events that make the audience feel and have an emotional connection with the characters. Moreover, these significant events are categorized as new awakenings, discoveries, and changes in consciousness that set off a mental or psychological effect to the readers. The author, Shakespeare, gives these internal events to characters such as Ophelia, Gertrude, and Hamlet throughout the play to give the sense of excitement, suspense, and climax which associate with their external action. Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius and the sister of Laertes, who both tell her to stop seeing Hamlet. To Polonius, Ophelia is an eternal virgin who is going to be a
In Hamlet, written by Shakespeare, Hamlet treats women awful. His mother, Gertrude, convinces Hamlet that women are untrustworthy because she betrayed King Hamlet by marrying Claudius so soon after his death. Hamlets acts extremely rude towards Ophelia. Hamlet has issues with both Gertrude and Ophelia; thus, he does not treat them kindly. Hamlet disapproves of his mother’s marriage to Claudius.
Hamlet’s views on women is adulterous which pertains to the misogynistic tendencies in the play; thus, Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude, sparks up his misogynistic approaches. Hamlet is repulsed with Gertrude since she was quick to re-wed immediately following Old Hamlet’s death and cries: “She married. O, most wicked speed, to post / With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!” (1.2.156-157). Hamlet is shocked that his mother remarries to Claudius, Old Hamlet’s brother, before letting the tears on her cheek to dry.
Hamlet often uses metaphors and figurative language to express his inner turmoil
Frailty, thy name is woman! (1.2.148) Hamlet thinks that all women trap men with their plotted tricks. Situations between Hamlet, Ophelia and Gertrude are far from an appropriate way to treat women. Hamlet has a pressing sexual desire for his mother Gertrude and that is what drives his hatred for women. Hamlet probably feels like he can not trust anyone because his own mother let him down.
Another good example of image in Hamlet is when Prince Hamlet describes how he feels about his mother’s quick decision to marry his uncle. “Must I remember? Why, she should hang on him, As if increase of appetite had grown,
The leading force for Hamlet’s behavior to change is his mother marrying her dead husband’s brother two months later. In the play Hamlet states “O God, a beast that wants discourse of reason/ Would have mourned longer-married with my uncle,/ My father’s brother, but no more like my father” ( I.ii.150-152). This explains that Hamlet is frustrated because his mother moved on so fast and it seemed to him that she never really loved King Hamlet. Hamlet also claims that “Together with all forms, moods, shapes of grief,/That can denote me truly” ( I.ii.82-83 ). Hamlet is trying to tell his mother Queen Gertrude how he feels after the
