How Does Oedipus Deserve His Fate

He and his family all remained happy in their ignorance of the truth until the plague struck Thebes. The people infer that the God Apollo is punishing the people for not finding the murderer of Laius. Oedipus, as the great ruler he may be, promises to discover the killer and dispel the plague. People try to tell him that it would be better if the past was left alone. But the king was not reluctant and continued.

In Oedipus The King, by Sophocles, Oedipus is given a prophecy from Apollo that he must slay his father and marry his mother. Frighten by this he decides to run away hoping that the prophecy doesn’t follow him. During his journey, he runs into a man and ends up killing him and also defeats the sphinx, making him the new king of Thebes. Shortly after being the king, it has come to his attention that the former king of Thebes has been murdered. He quickly demands to know who the killer is.

After Odysseus reveals his identity a lot happens. Well when he comes home after this war a lot has been rearranged and Odysseus isn 't to happy bout it. Things were taken, wife was disrespected, and his house was just taken over by wooers and the maids. Yes I do believe Odysseus was justified in his own actions.

With the realization of his demise, Oedipus tries to protect himself from punishment and shame by gouging out his own eyes and exiling himself out to die in the place destiny prevented him from dying originally. After many years of luxurious living, Oedipus’s predestined fate tears his life apart and returns him to the place he should have died as an infant, the mountain. He was a very conceited and arrogant man, who felt that he was the gods gift to the earth. He even said “I Oedipus whom all men call the Great.” This was a very haughty statement on his part. In search of the truth about the prophecy and putting an end to a plague Oedipus, search for king Laius’s killer, did somethings inadvertently, making him a tragic hero. His search for truth in the death of Laius the king, as well as his birth led to the ultimate destruction and downfall of his life.

Oedipus’s selfishness and temper eventually lead to his downfall. Oedipus selfishness made everyone else mad at him for him not believing them. He kept digging and digging himself into a deeper hole. This eventually made his punishment at the end worse for him. He also could not handle the truth so this made him disrespect the gods.

Oedipus was a member of a higher ruling class that tell us about tragic hero the truth behind his birth destroyed him. An old man was brought before Oedipus the king for questioning and the truth was told. When Oedipus was the only child in his family he was sent away from his family because oracle told a prophecy that Oedipus was going to kill his father and marry his mother. When the old man was questioned the old man was not aware that the baby boy who he took care off was Oedipus who was sent away from his house and received him from Laius who was the former king of Thebes now it is known that Oedipus is from a royal family. Oedipus is separated from all the other common people because of his royalty and his terrible future and because Oedipus is from a royal family and he is a natural born leader and has a higher status than other common people that makes him special and that gives him heights powers and his terrible future keeps him completely apart from others.

First, he was blind to the truth about his own life. Oedipus had no idea that his real parents were Laius and Jocasta, he was so blind that he got mad at anyone that would even suggest an idea such as that. As the story went on though, Oedipus could no longer run from the truth; he was forced to open his eyes to the reality and truth of his life. Oedipus killed his father and married his mother; he is the brother to his own kids and the son of his own mother. Oedipus was the one that was causing all of the downfall and bad times in Thebes.

It is ironic how he talks about what could possibly be his own consequences for his actions. While giving the speech Oedipus says “I pray, too, that, if he should become an honoured guest in my own home and with my knowledge, I may suffer all those things I’ve just called down upon the killers” (Sophocles). Oedipus explains how the suspect will face bad things, and that if the murderer was let into his own house, with his knowledge, he shall be punished for it. The reader can infer that Oedipus may be the culprit considering he may ironically be the “honored guest in his own home.” This can seem like a reasonable outcome considering the reader knows that the position of a king is honorable.

As Oedipus becomes the first to solve the riddle and defeat the Sphinx, he also saves the town of Thebes and is offered a marriage to the newly widowed Queen Jocasta in gratitude. Years later, at the opening of the play, the gods have brought a plague upon Thebes.
