John Proctor, being a hardworking man who supports his family, makes him an easy target since he's too busy for church, this supports that the hysteria affects people who should never have been accused. For example, after John returns home late at night he tells Elizabeth, “...I labor the earth from dawn of day to blink of night”, he is saying that all day he has been working (Miller 65). This shows that it wouldn't make sense for such a hard-working man who barely has time for his family to have time to practice witchcraft. Another example of John being hardworking is when he tells Elizabeth what he's been up too early in the morning, “I were planing far out to the forest edge” (Miller 49), this shows how far out in the woods John has to farm his land just to feed his family. This is why it’s hard for him to make time for any other activities which adds to the fact he’s an easy target which ultimately led to his

In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the antagonist, Abigail Williams, sparks the 1692 witch trails in Salem, Massachusetts. Early on, Abigail has an affair with John Proctor, a local farmer. At first, Abigail had once worked for Proctor as a house maid, but when Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, discovered that her husband was having an affair with the maid, she fires Abigail. In the middle of seeking revenge on Elizabeth for coming between her and Proctor’s “love”, Abigail also brings the entire village down as well. In The Crucible, the fear of witchcraft precedes the Salem witch trials; however, the accusers capitalize on this fear by alleging that neighbors committed acts of witchcraft in order to obtain their own wishes. An example of their manipulation of the public fears stems from Abigail's intentions behind accusing Elizabeth Proctor. In an attempt to remove Elizabeth from the scenario so she could live with John, Abigail accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft with tampered evidence, demonstrating her misuse of the court system and the public’s fear. Thus, Murrow’s description of McCarthy’s actions relate to that of Miller’s The Crucible on a fundamental

If Abigail never had the affair or never tried to drink blood there wouldn’t be such an issue in Salem. What also led to this was her and the girls allegedly dancing and making potions to form some sort of witchcraft to also kill Elizabeth.

(Miller 143). Although in reality, Proctor did not sell his friends, he makes this exaggeration to demonstrate to Danforth the guilt he feels and the reasons he needs this redemption. He feels incapable of living his life with that guilt and wants to take the opportunity to do the right thing and absolve it through this sacrifice. Subsequently, Miller develops Proctor’s conflicts with guilt to reveal how one can change for the better through their chances at redemption through hyperboles and
