Character Evolution in The Crucible In the Crucible many of the existing characters change over the period of the play. From getting a better look of their surroundings to finding what they were searching for. The play is set back in 1692 in Massachusetts where they talk about Salem witches and witchcraft throughout the whole play. There is a lot of pain in The Crucible and a lot of realization of the character’s lives. From the beginning of the story the characters have their mind set on finding who did what wrong while not focusing on what they were doing and by the end figuring out more than they knew about themselves. He was looked at in a bad way because he committed adultery in a very strict, religious community. Proctor knows that his sin will follow him for the rest of his life so he spends time trying to clean of his name. He is very angry when we first hear of him arguing with Elizabeth. John knows what he did to his wife was wrong and he tells us that. He didn’t go to Salem for months because that’s where Abigail was and he wanted nothing but happiness from and for Elizabeth. “I have gone tip toe in this house all seven months she’s been gone. I have not moved to somewhere where I don’t think to please you” (Miller 54). This quote shows how bad he wants forgiveness from his wife, he wants to show her he can be a good husband. He really proves himself when they come to arrest Elizabeth for being accused of a witch, he defends her and tells them she has nothing to do with any of it. At the testimony John confesses to his adultery with Abigail to take an advantage, which proves how much he cares about his wife. John’s change was unexpected for his wife, she sees the change and accepts him for it. From finding forgiveness to admitting their wrongs. In the beginning they had their faults in which they made up for leaving them stronger as people. Starting out with a lot of pain and sorrow and leaving with a better outlook on their lives. The characters were important to this play to show that people can be wrong, and that people can mess up and find their way back. It shows that people can change for the better and admit when they do something wrong in the midst of their lives. In the end they all gave forgiveness to themselves and learned to move on from their past mistakes. Elizabeth and John Proctor gained trust and they forgave and forgot. While Reverend Hale made many mistakes that he couldn’t change but forgave himself for. All in all change is
