There is a lot of pain in The Crucible and a lot of realization of the character’s lives. From the beginning of the story the characters have their mind set on finding who did what wrong while not focusing on what they were doing and by the end figuring out more than they knew about themselves. He was looked at in a bad way because he committed adultery in a very strict, religious community. Proctor knows that his sin will follow him for the rest of his life so he spends time trying to clean of his name. He is very angry when we first hear of him arguing with Elizabeth. John knows what he did to his wife was wrong and he tells us that. He didn’t go to Salem for months because that’s where Abigail was and he wanted nothing but happiness from and for Elizabeth. “I have gone tip toe in this house all seven months she’s been gone. I have not moved to somewhere where I don’t think to please you” (Miller 54). This quote shows how bad he wants forgiveness from his wife, he wants to show her he can be a good husband. He really proves himself when they come to arrest Elizabeth for being accused of a witch, he defends her and tells them she has nothing to do with any of it. At the testimony John confesses to his adultery with Abigail to take an advantage, which proves how much he cares about his wife. John’s change was unexpected for his wife, she sees the change and accepts him for it. In the beginning John felt sorry for himself and believed nothing would get better in the matter of his sins and near the end he bettered himself for his wife and proved what he could …show more content…

Starting out with a lot of pain and sorrow and leaving with a better outlook on their lives. The characters were important to this play to show that people can be wrong, and that people can mess up and find their way back. It shows that people can change for the better and admit when they do something wrong in the midst of their lives. In the end they all gave forgiveness to themselves and learned to move on from their past mistakes. Elizabeth and John Proctor gained trust and they forgave and forgot. While Reverend Hale made many mistakes that he couldn’t change but forgave himself for. All in all change is
PROCTOR How much is a name worth? Your life? Proctor’s motivations change in the story about confessing, but John Proctor adapts by staying himself with Elizabeth and about his good name. John Proctor made one major mistake and thats costs him his life. Before The Crucible even started a major part of the story was that John Proctor committed lechery with Abigail Williams.
In the final analysis, three important characters from The Crucible John Proctor, Rev. Hale, and Elizabeth Proctor share a bond together when it comes down to change. Initially, John was exceptionally blameworthy over the way that he deceived Elizabeth by cheating on her. As everything progress toward the end of the play, Elizabeth forgave John for his transgression triggering John to excuse himself for the wrongdoing as well. Afterward, John understood that despite the fact that he will die, he will always be a superior individual. While on the other hand on the first sight of Hale he seemed very cocky when to trying to take out all people using witchcraft for good but instantly leaves the court when innocent people are killed because he couldn't
In the play written by Arthur Miller we see characters put into tough situations where they are put on trial and change throughout the trial to resolve the problem. Two people throughout the play go through change, John Proctor and Reverend John Hale. Proctor goes through somewhat of a change while John Hale dramatically changes throughout the play. John Proctor is the first to go through change, In the beginning of the play John is selfish and only worried about him and his secret.
“Let you look for the goodness in me, and judge me not.” John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth Proctor both endure a crucible or severe moral test. Elizabeth is put to the test various times during the play including when she was asked if her husband is a adulterer. John Proctor makes the descion to admit he had relations with Abigail williams.
In the last act Hale was speaking with John Proctor and began to realize that Proctor was lying. Though Hale is a reverend he realized how the
Arthur Miller wrote play The Crucible, which is based on a real story; play begins in a very interesting moment and ends in a very dramatic scene. At the time, when the play was written, witchcraft was a big thing for people. People used witchcraft to accuse other people and take their property, or because they just don’t like them. The story shows us, how do characters have changed from the beginning of the play and until the very end. The Proctor is one of the main characters in The Crucible.
In this essay there are a couple of things that need to be analyzed, the subjects that are being analyzed is how a few of the characters have changed or stayed the same throughout the play. The Crucible is about the Salem witch trials which got nineteen people killed because of a lie made up by a bunch of children. The play takes place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, during the years of 1692 and 1693. During this time there was a group of young women who were caught dancing in the woods and instead of getting in trouble they made up the lie that witches made them do it. That is just a background on what this essay will be about.
In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, he develops his characters by putting them in situations that challenges their initial views. They all change in their own way throughout the play. Miller shows that when you put people in a certain situation they cannot be close-minded. They have to put aside their own morals and think of the other possibilities. An example of a character that really developed throughout the play was Reverend Hale.
Elizabeth Proctor is an innocent woman with good morals, her accuser (Abigail Williams) is unreliable, and she would have committed a crime by now. Goody Proctor is religious, faithful, and has a virtuous life. Her strong beliefs allow her to never go against the ways of society. As a Puritan woman, it is known to never speak unless spoken to, and the job of a female is to cook and clean.
People in the Crucible thought he was an honorable man and that no honorable man will ever sin. So when John and Abigail meet each other, Abigail flirts with John, and John say, “No, no, Abby. That’s done with.” So we know he has committed adultery against his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, with Abigail Williams and that gives us a bad image of John sinning and commiting adultery with Abigail and doesn’t really respect his wife.
During the hysteria of 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, many people were accused of practicing witchcraft. Therefore, their reputation, was ruined. Other people committed many sins in order to keep their reputation clean in town. For instance, some characters had to lie, fight, and accuse other people of witchcraft which could get the individual out of trouble and keep their hands clean. when a person got accused of being a witch, the person’s reputation would get ruined and the person would go to jail or be hanged.
John Proctor changed significantly from the beginning of the play to the end. At first, he is a farmer outside of Salem. He cuts wood, plows, and owns a great amount of property. John is married to Elizabeth Proctor. He had an affair with Abigail Williams, who was the Proctor’s former servant.
John Proctors role in Salem at the beginning of the play was as a local who was married to Elizabeth Proctor. He was to stay out of the drama going around town about the witchcraft. He did not believe it at all. John Proctor knew right away that the girls were lying because he knew how Abigail was since he had been having an affair with her. But because of this affair with Abigail Williams he could not say anything because than he knew his secret of having an affair with a minor would get out through Salem and his good name and reputation would be wrecked so would Elizabeth's.
In The Crucible, nobody is as messed up as John Proctor. Some people in Salem are straight-up evil, others are practically saints. A few are internally conflicted and go through some changes, but they have nothing on Proctor. Throughout the whole play, he is at war with himself. Although he is ultimately a good person, he made one mistake that constantly haunts him.
Twenty people were executed as a result of the Salem witch trials, a reign of terror that swept up most of the characters in Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible. Salem is a small Puritan town ruled by a theocratic government. The social order of Salem starts with the church leaders and wealthy male land owners and ends with young, unmarried woman and slaves. The church is structured as an earthly representation of biblical law and possesses the power to persecute those outside the holy edicts. Women are subservient to men, cannot own property and are viewed with suspicion in the church.
