Tom Robinson was put on trial on August 26th, 1935 for the raping of Mayella Violet Ewell and was found guilty not much longer after that. The crime, November 21st, 1934, has two different views- the Ewell’s and then Tom’s. I, Jem Atticus Finch, believe Tom Robinson is not guilty for numerous reasons. My dad, Atticus Finch was the defendant of Tom Robinson and I too wish to defend him. I’m a twelve year old boy living in Maycomb County with my Aunt, father, and sister. Tom Robinson is actually crippled due to his left arm being caught in a cotton gin when we was younger, thus stripping him from most tissues and muscles in that particular arm. This incapability controverses with a lot of what Robert E. Lee Ewell, the father of Mayella Ewell, …show more content…
“He got me round the neck, cussin’ me an’ saying’ dirt–– I fought’n’hollered, but he had me round the neck. He hit me agin an‘ agin—”[ Page 180] This quote came directly from Mayella’s dialect and there is certainly one thing wrong with it, and should be taken into question. In order to clout Mayella and choke her would be a very difficult task for Tom, as his left arm doesn’t give too much help. For him to be clutching Mayella by the throat with one arm and to be creating large bruises with the other is physically impossible. Mayella's bruises showed mostly on the right side of her face. Commonly, if an attacker’s left hand is their dominant, they’d strike mostly on the right side, and vice versa. Tom’s left hand wouldn’t be able to cause so much damage, like the black eye found on her right side. If Tom’s not the attacker because he’s right handed, then who’s the left handed assailant? Bob Ewell was asked to write his name on a paper during the trial, he was found to be left handed. I watched from the balcony with my sister as I excitedly but softly mumbled “We’ve got him” [Page 178] Bob Ewell was the one to beat up Mayella Ewell, not
We know this because Mr. Tate says on trial ” Oh yes, that makes it her right eye. It was her right eye”. When someone is inflicting harm to the face using a fist by instinct you usually punch straight toward the face not diagonally. This is important to note because Tom Robinson didn't have a left arm as he told Atticus I can't “use my left hand at all.
Tom Robinson could not use his left hand because it was torn up in a cotton gin when he was younger. This man deserved nothing less than a fair trial. Shooting at a crippled man is the equivalent
In the news today, the biggest things are the killings of African Americans like Mike Brown, and Eric Gardner; and how their lives didn’t matter because they are black. In a novel written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is accused of raping a nineteen year old girl, and he is given an unfair trial just because of his skin color. Depending on what kind of situation someone is in, their character and personality are going to change. Most people are just going to want to finish their job and get it over with and go home, but then when they are put under pressure they snap and can’t focus. Other times they might be the most caring person out in the world, and is trying to help people out.
“... It was her right eye, Mr. Finch. I remember now, she was bunged up on that side of her face…” (Lee 193), “Your left handed, Mr. Ewell … ” (Lee 201). This implies that Mayella wasn't beaten by Tom, but by Bob Ewell, her father.
Responsibility for Tom’s Death You should believe that the cause of Tom Robinson’s death is because of the actions of those in his community. Tom Robinson is a physically disabled black man in To Kill A Mockingbird accused of raping a white 19-year-old girl, Mayella Ewell. Tom is disabled because of an accident when he was younger, causing his left arm to be completely useless. To Kill a Mockingbird is set in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s.
“He was running. It was during the exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over. Right in front of them-” (Lee, 315) The Ewell family, Tom, and the racist town are all responsible for Tom Robinson’s death.
Mayella said ¨ So he come in the yard´an I went into the house to get the nickel and I turned around an fore I knew it he was on me¨(Lee 205). This evidence shows Mayella is guilty because Tom was helping her with the thing she asked him to do and he didn't jump on her. Mayella also said ¨
So he come in the yard an’ I went in the house to get him the nickel and i turn around an fore i knew it he was on me.” Mayella Ewell is clearly stating how she called Tom Robbinson over to her house to help her do some of her chores and Tom being the kind fellow he is, went over and helped her out but Mayella then states how Tom started attacking her. This quote relates to the fact that Mayella is to blame for Tom Robisons death because she is stating how Tom “attacked” her while she was asking him to cut up some chiffarobe for her. Another statement from Mayella, she says the following, “ won’t answer a word if you keep mocking me.”
By saying this, Mayella reminds the jury that as men, it is their job to protect their women. So even though they may not think Tom is guilty, they convict him anyway for
A novel called To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. There is a case between an African American named Tom Robinson and a white woman named Mayella Ewell. She accused him of raping her. Tom was always kind to Mayella by helping her with things to do because he felt bad that she was always working. He passed one day and she asked him to get the box on top of the chiffarobe, so he got on the chair and got it then she put her hands around his leg, but she claims that he threw her down and raped her.
In our society, innocent people, known as mockingbirds, experience prejudice in their lives. A/T: In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Background: Tom Robinson is a black person who’s was accused of raping a white girl named Mayella Ewell which he has never done. For this reason, Atticus Finch was appointed to be his lawyer. As a result, Atticus takes a stand for him by approving his case and standing up for him, but Tom was still found guilty.
Tom Robinson is crippled on his left hand which was caused by getting his hand stuck in a Cotton GIn when he was 12 years old, as Tom recalled "I got it caught in a cotton gin, caught it in Mr. Dolphin Raymond's cotton gin when I was a boy....almost bled to death....tore all the muscles loose from my bones." (Lee pg 186)”. This shows that Tom Robinson couldn’t have choked her and beat her with one hand so it would have been almost impossible to do any of this. Atticus wanted to make sure the jury had no qualms about acquitting Tom Robinson. Another reason this is an important fact is, because right when Tom brought up the fact that he only had one hand the expressions on Mayella's face turned from sad to surprised or like if she committed
In the South of the United States in the 1930´s, the justice system was very unfair towards colored people. Colored people that were sent to court could not receive a fair trial because of the prejudice and racism from the jury. This happened all the time, especially in Maycomb Alabama. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a colored man named Tom Robinson was convicted of assaulting a white woman just because of the color of his skin. Tom Robinson should have been found not guilty for many reasons.
Emily Callan Due Date: Tuesday, November 4th I am reading the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 281. In this journal I will be predicting and… I predict that Tom Robinson will be convicted of raping Mayella Ewell because of the racism and bias he is facing.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley are two characters who represent the mockingbird. In the midst of finding who Boo truly is, Atticus Finch explains to his children, Jem and Scout, that it is a sin to kill the bird because they don’t do anything but make music. As the story progresses, and the two “mockingbirds” are being accused and attacked both verbally and physically, the identity of the mockingbirds surfaces. Tom Robinson was a crippled African American man whose left arm was a foot shorter than his right, where it was caught in a cotton gin.
