Progressivism came into effect because of the Gilded Age because it was created to fix the economy of the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age lead to the Progressive Era in many different ways, a lot of unfairness and hard times made the Progressive Era come into action. There was, however, a wide voter participation and interest in the political process; most elections saw about an 80% turnout. Yet the unique dilemmas created by industrialization, urbanization, and immigration were met with inactiveness and misunderstanding. At the national level, public interests tended to dominate the political scene.

The Gilded Age is often recalled as one of the most significant periods in American history and for great reason. As with most things, the Gilded Age also had its fair share of vices such as corruption in business and the blatant exploitation of laborers. As the frustration with these things began to build, politicians often distanced themselves from serious issues or flat our refused to properly address them. When politicians did attempt to address this issues, the measures taken were either insufficient or rescinded before anything could truly be effected.

Corporations were taking advantage of the nation’s increasing economy, and the most affected were the people. The industrialist was able to amass tremendous wealth by exploiting the people, justifying their actions with social Darwinism and the government’s protection, which promotes social class divisions.

Progressive era main factors were also women suffrage, poor immigrants, labor rights and economic reform. A lot of stuff occurred when progressive era was about to end, for example; World War 1 took place. World War 1 was a fight between over 30 nations.

This was a time when a white supremacist view was the only right way to see the economic, political and social standpoints in the country. It later was labeled as the Gilded Age because there were so many issues that had to be covered up and could not be fixed. The term gilded means to cover with thin gold leaf, which is pretty much what they tried to do. During this time there was a rapid expansion of industrial growth, railroads began to become of high interest, and the wages in the north started rising.

There were many capable leaders who were building a better future. Vanderbilt stopped at nothing to connect the nation via railroads. Rockefeller used his trademark ruthlessness to establish his oil empire. Cities were expending to the sky, this was built on the strength of Andrew Carnegie’s steel.
This was caused by the lack of regulations and laws which allowed businessmen to get away with paying their employees unethically low wages without benefits. This lack of regulations and laws also enabled business to cut corners, which lead to unsafe product, such as spoiled meat as seen in document 2, and child labor, which is seen in document 3, in order to save money. During the gilded era, corrupt politicians added to the problems and injustices. Document 4 shows this using a comic.
The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Progressives typically held that the irresponsible actions of the rich were corrupting both public and private life. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.
During the Progressive Era there were multiple of changes occurring that people became overwhelmed. New resources in the oil market, industrialization, fights for equality. There were many factory jobs, however, no one to stand up for the workers. So of course people will turn to their government for help, the power house of the country. However, even the government was picky in what they helped with.
