The purpose of this article is to explain the Indian removal that occurred under Andrew Jackson’s presidency. The thesis of this essay states that Americans kicked the Natives off of their land to fulfill a selfish desire to expand the cotton industry.           The first point Wallace uses to support his thesis is how Jackson’s financial interest in the land affected the removal of Natives.

Eli Whitney’s invention of the Cotton Gin in 1793 equalized the refinement of cotton by replacing slave labor with mechanical innovation. This ensured that farmers could focus on raw output rather than refinement. Joined with the slavery and the expansion of the domestic market, the ease of producing such a profitable cash crop created the equal opportunity for upward economic mobility quintessential of democracy. Additionally, egalitarianism in commerce became further attained by the Transportation Revolution, which saw the incorporation of canals and steamboats to ensure that farmers had equal chance to reach profitable markets regardless of location, which previously greatly limited economic prosperity. Tobacco was the basis of economic life and a motivation for settling down in Jamestown. This helped result in an increase of settlers. The English expansion sparked war in 1622 led by Opechancanough. This war resulted in a tragic death of about a third of the nation. Particularly, the English inhabitants seized Indian’s land and food, cornering the Indian citizens towards limiting possibilities; needless to say they ended up dispersing.

During the 19th century there was a tremendous amount of attention from the rest of the nation of the issues of land and Indian removal. No matter your stance at the time, one thing became clear: socially, politically and economically, slavery was the fabric of American success and gave birth to the Old South as we know it today. At the center of the entire institution of slavery, and central to its defense, was the economic domination it provided a young country in international markets. In the early 19th century, cotton was a popular commodity and overtook sugar as the main crop produced by slave labor. The production of cotton became the nation’s top priority; America supplied ¾ of the cotton supply to the entire world.

The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. Versions of a cotton gin have existed since the first century in which single rollers were used to try to separate the seed from the cotton. Over time, a double roller system was invented. Finally, in 1793, the version invented by Whitney actually used teeth-like projections to remove the seed from the cotton. A belt and pulley system then separated the lint from the seeds.

Senator James Henry Hammond delivered a speech to reflect on the hard work slaves and slaveholders they have done which was beneficial to countries in Europe. Their increasingly amount of cotton was very serviceable and that it should be credited to all the slaves and to the slaveholder who helped other country save a lot of money on cotton and giving the last of the money to charity. “That cotton, but for the bursting of your speculative bubbles in the North, which produced the whole of this convulsion, would have brought us $100,000,000. We have sold it for $65,000,000 and saved you. Thirty-five million dollars we, the slaveholders of the South, have put into the charity box for your magnificent financiers, your "cotton lords," your "merchant princes."

However, another significant contrast caused by the establishing intentions was the economy of the two. As specified beforehand, the Chesapeake economy spun around the tobacco business, which prepared for different enterprises too. Slave exchange depended completely on the tobacco ranch proprietors as a market to pitch the slaves to. Being enslaved was not an easy job for African Americans. African Americans survived slavery through their connection with their culture. They then went on to contribute to the economic and social development of the South and America. African Americans survived the institution of slavery and Africanized the American South. They helped free themselves by sticking together as a family, resisting, as well as wanting slavery to change.

If you turn on the news or look at any popular TV show, you may see references to the image of African Americans in the U.S. today, but how is this different from how they were portrayed years ago? Because TV and other media are a constant presence in American’s lives, they have had a significant impact on the way people thought and still think about important social issues, especially race, ultimately resulting in the differing viewpoints of blacks from nineteen forty to now. The Civil Rights movement began in nineteen fifty five with “Rosa Parks, whose refusal to sit in the back of a bus sparked a chain of Civil Rights protests that rocked the South and the nation.” So from the nineteen forties to the nineteen seventies, this time period witnessed how the media handled not only the Civil Rights movement and the image of African Americans
