South Carolina 1860
South Carolina had long been a catalyst for, and a symbol of, Southern dreams of a bold new future and an independent new confederacy as well as Northern nightmares of the American experiment gone awry. Most white South Carolinians believed that their economic prosperity, political interest, and social stability were inextricable tied to state rights, the organization of subjugation, and the manor framework as it had advanced subsequent to the frontier period. It is a commonplace of American history that South Carolina leaders did not always, in the first decades of the Union, defend the extreme state rights doctrines which John C. Calhoun so ably expounded later in the antebellum period. In the convention of 1787 South

Putting politics and the huge amount of slaves together it is obvious that it effected the political decisions in the state. When it comes to voting for the presidential elections, South Carolina was quite “Southern” since black people were not allowed to vote. This got criticized by the South Carolina delegates who were still in the opinion that black people of the people in general should not be allowed to vote and speak freely about those kinds of topics. When it comes to relations with other states it is noticeable that those have changed through time for South Carolina, since they left the Union, which is the more the northern states (Opposition is the Confederacy). South Carolina was not agreeing with the plans Abraham Lincoln would bring up, such things as equality and civil right for African American citizen were not in mind and South Carolina was strongly opposing that. Following this the state of South Carolina was trying to become part of the Confederacy, which happened on February 4, 1861. Being the first state to do so they were not unfollowed, because shortly after the states of Mississippi, Florida, Texas and Georgia
In order to calm things down, they made the Force Bill which forced them to pay the taxes. If they did not, then President Jackson had the right to harshly make South Carolina do it, by using the army. Jackson did not agree in letting a state nullify Federal
The South was afraid that if Abraham Lincoln was elected president that he would abolish slavery. That is not necessarily true because Abraham Lincoln had his own slaves but he just wanted to stop the spread of slavery. He did not want slavery to expand into the North or even to the new territories of the West. The South thought that Lincoln would abolish slavery and the South did not want to do that because they thought that the North would have too much power and they did not want to relinquish all of that power to the North. The slaves in the South were making their slaves owners a lot of money by working hard and not being paid for it.
The Southern states seceded from the Union in 1860 and 1861 due to the North’s reaction to the enforcement of the fugitive slave act, the publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the election of 1860. There were many factors that ultimately led to the causes for the South to secede in 1860 and 1861. One very impactful event was
South Carolina was furious about the new acts that Henry Clay had put into order. South Carolina felt that the high tariffs were unconstitutional and were pushing their citizens into poverty. Later South Carolina published an Ordinance of Nullification saying that they did not have to abide by the law of the higher tariffs, and that their officials did not have to enforce their citizens to follow it either. South Carolina also threatened to leave the Union if anyone tried to stop them from following this new Ordinance of Nullification. Of course President Andrew Jackson saw this as a huge issue.
Northern Carolina and Southern Carolina Northern Carolina and Southern Carolina were very different. In Northern Carolina their main crop was tobacco instead of rice and many of the early settlers came from Virginia. The sounds were not deep enough to permit seaports, so the northern settlers kept their ties to Virginia in order to have a port from which they could ship tobacco. In Southern Carolina their main crop was rice and Indians were the first slaves the southern settlers had, and later African Americans took their place. Three counties that were in the Southern Carolina is Berkeley County, Colleton County, and Craven County. Northern and Southern Carolina had many different things about them like crops and settlers.
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
The impact of slavery on the Old South is a difficult measure to establish because slavery was the Old South. While the popular adage was “Cotton is King,” it was simply a microcosm of the delusion of the day. Truly, slavery was king. Slavery was the growing tension of the time, political catalyst and ironically crux of American power. To the masses, slavery was a social defining stance; the “peculiar institution” to some and a defining moral line to others, American life was changed depending on what view you took of slavery.
I remember learning about Ben Tillman’s glorious achievements for our state throughout all of my school education, but not once did I ever learn about his campaign consisting of Red Shirts that went around terrorizing people during the very violent 1876 election for governor. The youth of South Carolina have been “shielded” from the dark parts of South Carolina history. This creates a generation of people that exist today only knowing a biased history of South Carolina. Without understanding the past, future generations cannot work to prevent the mistakes of our ancestors. Along with this, it creates a cycle of ignorance.
After the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860, eleven Southern states seceded from the Union. People in the South made a living through a plantation economy, Southerners needed cash crops that were labor intensive, using slaves to work this economy. The Northern economy was very different than the Southern economy the Northern economy was an industrialized economy, unlike the Southern economy. Abolitionists wanted slavery to end and thought it was an immoral and incorrect way to treat other human beings. Many Southerners supported the secession of South Carolina, and many other states, from the Union because they would rather leave the Union now than be killed by the people who hated them and the people they owned.
Southerners believed that the U.S. was made for and by the white race, and that the Africans had no part of their establishment. They believed that slaves were justified by the “..experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the almighty creator.” (Document B.) They did not want to give up their businesses or their beliefs too soon therefore, they
They shaped the Civil War by having the Emancipation Proclamation, the fourteenth amendment, and the fifteenth amendment. The consequences would be that at first the newly freed slaves wouldn’t have a place to go, because they never had no money and they didn’t have all their rights yet. The Emancipation Proclamation helped the slaves because they should be free. The Emancipation never really freed any
People in the south thought once Lincoln was elected, he would immediately abolish slavery. They threatened to leave the U.S., and they did. South Carolina was the first to
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave
The Southern and Northern states differentiate on many issues, which ultimately led them towards a Civil War. There stood deep social, economic, and political disparities between the North and the South. These modifications stemmed from the understanding of the United States Constitution on both sides. In the end, most of these disputes about the rights of states directed to the Civil War. There existed reasons other than slavery on behalf of the South 's breakaway.
Thesis Statement: In South Carolina, it was common for masters to own slaves, abuse them, give them harsh living conditions, and strict rules to follow. In response to the unfair conditions, slaves had uprisings or even ran away. Abraham Lincoln, the President at the time, wanted to end slavery, so he issued the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that slaves were both free in
