Thomas Jefferson was born at the Shadwell plantation in Goochland County in Virginia on April 13, 1743. He came from a wealthy, successful planter family. Due to his family’s wealth, he was able to go to school and have an education. He began his studies at age 9 and ended at age 16. Afterwards, he attended the College of William and Mary, where he studied under William Small and George Wythe. He was influenced by the Enlightenment through his professor, William Small.
