How Did Jane Addams Changed During The Progressive Era

No other place in the world could rival the US’s diversity, leading to many greats things in the US immediately, and in the long term. For example, Doc 3 shows Chinese workers in a salmon cannery, bringing along their knowledge of fish and how to prepare it. Something as small as this proves the larger idea that foreign immigrants bring along with them their traditions that make the US a more complex and interesting place to live. Due to this new diversity, places such as the “Hull House” were created to help immigrants adapt to life in the US, as well as a place to interact with other cultures. As Hilda Statt Polacheck said, “Hull House was an oasis in a desert of disease and monotony.

This quote showed how much she believed in equality for all, even for the smallest things. Addams also fought for the improvement of education and so everyone could get free education.

Jane Addams became a journalist because she wanted to help with the women’s history. She believed that women’s votes will provide the margin necessary to pass social legislation.

I was the eighth of nine children. As a child I battled many health problems. I suffered tuberculosis of the spine which left me with a curved back.

The Progressive Era lasted from the 1890’s to the early 1920’s. It was centralized around socialism and political reform. One of the major changes that took place during this era, was the labor legislation. Many workers were working long shifts, for several days straight, making their work life just about unbearable, and unworkable conditions. The job environment had become to where it was unsafe, unsanitary, and unregulated conditions for very low wages.

Workers felt unappreciated and that without rising up against their employers, they would be left starving,homeless, or dead. Workers wanted more money, an eight hour workday, safe working conditions, and protection against wage cutting. A couple of reformers during the Progressive Era were Jane Addams and Jacob Riis. Both worked toward helping the immigrants, women, children, and the poor working class. Jane Addams was a reformer who opened a settlement house to help the less fortunate.

Anthony was a prominent feminist author who started the movement of women’s suffrage and she was also the president of the National American Women Suffrage Association. Anthony was in favor of abolitionism as she was a fierce activist in the anti-slavery movement before the civil war. Susan Anthony was born on February 15, 1820, in Adams, Massachusetts, and before becoming a famous feminist figure, she worked as a teacher. Anthony grew up in a Quaker family that made her spend her time working on social causes. And her father was an owner of a local cotton mill.

She seperated herself from what society belived a women should do and created many radical changes for that time period. Many of her fellow friends, characterized as going crazy and too hopeful. But in the years later to come, Jane Addams would redefine what a women can and should do.
