Involuntarily I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way that might have been the end of a dock when I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and i was alone again in the unquiet darkness.”(P.21) Gatsby for some reason symbolized the green light at the end of Daisy's dock as a symbol for his hope and dreams and the quote gives the reader an idea on how gatsby feels about her as an example when he (trembles). So whenever Gatsby sees this light at the end of Daisy's dock it just reminds him of his hope and dreams that includes Daisy and is why he has worked so hard to get his
This act of him staring off into the distance at this green light symbolizes the hope he has to develop a future with Daisy. Nick recaps in the novel that he “was not alone-fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadow of my neighbor’s mansion … he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way … a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock” (Fitzgerald 22). Both the use of the “dark water” and “single green light” symbolize Gatsby's longing for his ideal life with Daisy and his pursuit of the american dream. In this case, the dark water is meant to exhibit the pain that Gatsby feels while he is separated from Daisy, the woman he loves, and the green light is meant to exhibit his hope for a future with Daisy despite the obstacles he will face.
Fitzgerald sets the stage for Gatsby by explaining, “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water– and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been at the end of a dock” (Fitzgerald 20-21). Gatsby experienced sorrow when he continued to reach out towards Daisy. He cares about Daisy so deeply and he wants her to reciprocate the feeling. The light at the end of the dark symbolizes Gatsby’s hope for Daisy being too far away from his reach. Gatsby had not given up on her or their love even if it seemed as if Daisy was not reaching back.

Through the Facade The America dream, once rife with assurance and affluence, consumes the innocuous dreamers into greed and corruption. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, James Gatz is captivated by the empty promises of the 1920s American dream and love story, especially that of Daisy Fay. To pursue his ambitions, Gatz sacrifices his values, as a means of personifying his idyllic rendition of Jay Gatsby. Through the failures and successes of Gatsby, James Gatz persists underneath the façade with no success in embodying Gatsby. As such, Gatz’s representation of his idealistic self falls short of the expectations of the West Eggers and the East Eggers, failing to assimilate in his new lifestyle.

He does everything he possibly can to win her back and his blind ignorance of reality stops him from seeing the obvious fact that he can’t repeat the past. Gatsby is a dreamer and is described as having an “extraordinary gift for hope,” which marks him out as unique and is the reason for his ignorance to reality. The Gilded Age was a time period between the late 1860s to 1896 where many things seemed perfect and flawless on the surface but were actually corrupt underneath. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was set in this time period. Therefore, there are many examples of how people and places can be gilded, or corrupt, in The Great Gatsby, including the West and East Eggs, New York City, the Valley of Ashes, Daisy, Gatsby, and Gatsby’s house. Two main themes in The Great Gatsby along with the Gilded Age are wealth and corruption. These two themes are often entangled with each other and one usually leads to the other.
