The Hard Times of The Charles Town Settlers Unlike the modern American, the average Charles Town settler’s life was brutal and harsh. The hamlet of Charles Town was on the track to be founded in 1663 when eight Lords Proprietors were given a grant from King Charles I of England to settle or establish an organization of land below the colony of Virginia, after the failed grant designated to Sir Robert Heath in 1629. This newly established settlement laid at Albemarle Point on the Ashley River in 1670. With the town still being new, they relied heavily on trade with the Native Americans. Though Charles Town’s future looked bright everyday task were still a constant struggle.

The colony of Jamestown was at a population of 504 after an arrival of a fleet of 9 ships carrying women, men, children and much needed food and supplies. Captain John Smith took hold of the chaotic government and put in place rigid policies of discipline and agricultural cultivation. In 1608 a gunpowder accident wounding Smith, his rivals used this opportunity to force him to return to England and name George Percy as his successor as president of the council. The day before John Smith’s departure, Captain Davis arrived with 16 other men adding to the population of Jamestown. However, a few weeks later, president Percy sent Captain Ratcliffe to build a fort for fishing and trade at Point Comfort.

In the “Letter Of Thomas Hutchinson,” written on January 20, 1769, Hutchinson writes, “I doubt whether it is possible to project a system of government in which a colony 3000 miles distant from the parent state shall enjoy all the liberty of the parent state.” (Hutchinson, 1) Hutchinson mentions the distance between America and Britain and states his beliefs that it is absurd for a country to presume that they have the same liberty and freedom as its parent state.
