“Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.” Rene Magritte. When you read this quote you can think of the deep symbolism in Lord of the flies. In the book there are many things that have different meanings, such as the fire means hope and how the lord of the flies is a sign for evil. They each have deeper meanings that can be related to WWII (but also) as well to modern America.
Hope can mean many things, it can also be represented by different things. In the book Lord of the Flies hope is represented by the fire. It's a chance at getting off the island. “A fire! Make a fire!”(Golding 52). In this moment the boys realize that if they have a fire they have a chance at getting off the island. Hope in WWII would be the HIghway act of 1956. “Speedy safe transcontinental travel” (“The interstate” par. 1). Having better ways of getting to places, safer roads, and less traffic jams people are going to be able to have hope in safer travels. Hope that you can get from point a to point be safely. The

There is always more to the story. Like a book cover people look inside and can see something another person can’t. Not everyone could see a fire as a sign of hope and not everyone sees transportation as hope for a better future and nicer now. Whether a pig's head on a stick is evil can be debated, just as to say Donald Trump is evil could be debated. The special things about symbols is that they can be interpreted in different ways. Everything has different meaning to different people. One person might see a pentagram and think of the five wounds of Christ or they see it as a sign of evil. One symbol with two completely different meanings. Everything is special and has its own meaning. Everyone one has his or her purpose just as a symbol has its purpose. “Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see” Rene
These conventions are established and internalized arbitrarily by individuals, societies, and cultures. We can observe this situation in different interpretations of same stories. For instance, in ‘Rocking Horse Winner’, Paul’s rocking horse can be perceived as a symbol of his troubles over sexuality or be seen as an analogy since Paul fails to gain his mother’s love despite all his effort like the rocking horse remaining in the same place regardless of the rider’s effort. However, as mentioned in class, for Ray Bradbury it may be just symbolizing an autistic child rocking back and forth. Hence, the meaning of a symbol depends on the reader’s point of view.
A Symbolic Moment Arguably, the conch shell is one of the most symbolic items in the novel; the moment Ralph blows into it, the boys are brought together. It is this pivotal moment that makes Ralph appear to be the clear choice for a leader. It is easy to understand why the boys gravitated towards him, their first sight of Ralph was of him sitting, "the conch trailing from one hand, his head bowed on his knees;" (Golding, 19) a clear image of confidence and strength. The boys are easily swayed by his symbolic power and when it comes time to choose between Ralph and Jack, the majority of the boys rush to support Ralph as their leader. Why did they choose Ralph?
“Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” This quote is said by Peter Drucker. The more effort leaders put in the more effort they are going to get out from the people they are leading. The leader might be dis-liked, but being liked isn’t in the job description. Being a leader might not be that hard, but just because they are a leader doesn’t mean they are good.
And who ignores hope. What role does Hope to play in this savage new world? Hope is very predominant in lord of the flies, but where is it specifically? Almost every character in Golding’s lord of the flies either exhibits hope or does not.
When the boys get stranded on this island they must take care of themselves and try to get rescued. As the boys climb this mountain to get home they face new challenges which resulted them to descend into savagery. With these new challenges of killing the pig for the first time, them breaking the conch, and deaths of Simon and Piggy they to descend into savagery causing them to lose their innocence. After the boys crash landed on the island it was only a matter of time before the boys descend into savagery because lack of leadership, need for survival and loss of innocence. Their first goal on the island was to have fun and get rescued but throughout their stay, they get further away from that.
Also a symbol can mean something in real life. Could be a person or an object. In this story there were a lot of different symbols with different
IMAGERY The novel begins with a bunch of young boys who are trapped on an island after a plane crash. Throughout the novel William Golding includes various types of imagery to accurately describe each significant place on the island the boys are stranded on. An example would be calling the place where the airplane sliced through the brush “the scar”. The most realistic use of imagery is the description of the patch of the island where the boys would burn what they intended to be a "small fire."
Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. It drives us all. It makes us believe in something even when we think everything is against us. Author Nam Le explores the theme of hope in his short story, The Boat and director John Hill coat in his film, The Road. The author and director explore the theme through character development, scenery, the use of symbols and metaphors also through character behaviours.
“He’s a feral child. No mother, no father, no one to care for him or raise him or teach how to be human” (Rodman Phillbrick). Throughout the novel Lord of the Flies there are many signs of the group of boys changing in drastic ways. If a child is left alone in a forest without society to tell them how to act they will become more instinctual. Reasons to support this theory are the physical changes, emotional changes, and the behavioral changes.
Hope can consist of staying positive even through the most calamitous of times, remembering some of your precious memories, and even waiting patiently for good outcomes. Having hope can help you overcome obstacles that you may have thought were unfeasible to surpass. There may be times where hope seems out of your grasps. Yo may even start feeling like there is no point in having hope, but a positive attitude can help a tremendous amount when handling conflict. Having something taken from your grasps makes you want to fight for it, but waiting patiently and having hope can also get the lost item back.
“Piggy and Ralph, under the threat of the sky, found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society. They were glad to touch the brown backs of the fence that hemmed in the terror and made it governable” (152). This quote is from “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding. A group of young boys are dumped onto an island while being a part of an air attack. While waiting to be rescued, they the boys find themselves losing what civilization they had in them.
Everyone will face evil at some point in their lives, but the way the evil is embraced or deflected will differ among every man. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, symbolism is used to communicate the theme of Understanding the Inhumanity/Inherent Evil of Man as represented through the double ended spear, the fire, and the Lord of the Flies. The spear represents the evil inside of humankind and the perception that killing and hurting each other out of anger is acceptable. Fire symbolizes the evil act of stealing to achieve a human wants. Lastly, the Lord of the Flies symbolizes the Inherent Evil of Man through demonstrating that a boy understood that the evil is within them instead of around them, and is not something that could be killed
“Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.” Symbols can add a deeper meaning than just an object itself that the author is trying to make. Symbols can also foreshadow what is yet to come. The audience can interpret a symbol in many ways it depends on their experience. In Southside Chicago the Younger family is struggling to have hope as they are always facing society.
