The Homogeneity of Pop Music Pop music, or popular music, in the modern sense has been around in the United States for several decades, having begun around the late sixties, and has encompassed an assortment of genres throughout its progression. As pop music has aged and adapted, an increasingly common complaint among the critics of this genre is all pop songs being homogenous, or they “all sounds the same”. Typically, the fans of this genre respond by stating each song is easily distinguishable from one another, provide a unique musical experience, or they aren’t less unique than any other category of music. Nevertheless, recent evidence supports the notion of pop music sharing numerous underlying traits between many of its songs. The homogeneity …show more content…
There are a plethora of factors which play into how music is perceived by the listener, whether it be the rhythm, tempo, instruments, lyrics, etc. and although all of these things are important, the overarching detail in music production contributing to the homogeneity of pop music is the element of variability. From my experience of listening to the radio, many songs have a strong tendency towards the repetition of certain words, usually related to the title or meaning of the song. According to Percino, et al. “Album sales numbers of a style, however, typically increase with decreasing complexity, see Fig. 5B. This can be interpreted as music becoming increasingly formulaic… under increasing sales numbers due to a tendency to popularize music styles with low variety and musicians with similar skills.” These findings support the notion of pop music lacking variety as it is one of, if not the, most popular music styles in the industry. One example of popular music reaching drastic levels of repetition is presented by the song “Gucci Gang”. Following its release in 2017 by the artist Lil Pump, “Gucci Gang” peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a chart of the 100 most popular songs in the United States based on sales, radio play, and online streaming, and stayed on the chart for 24 weeks in total. Although it has an official runtime of 2 minutes and 10 seconds, the lyrics end …show more content…
The aforementioned factors play a significant role in influencing what is purchased by the consumer, but if they bought other genres instead of pop music, then the industry would be forced to change. When it comes to sales “The music industry is a Superstar economy… the top 1% account for 77% of all artist recorded music income” (Mulligan). Artists who would fall under this 1% criteria mostly belong to the pop genre, such as Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and so on. Notwithstanding drama-related reductions in popularity, artists such as these, and several others of “superstar” status, are the ones providing a great deal of the profits for the pop industry. It is through the widespread support of these artists by consumers where the homogeneity of pop music is encouraged and
Pop culture is in constant evolution molded by the people. Over the generations the style of music in the entertainment industry has transformed dramatically. Music styles have evolved from smooth blues, the Beatles, rock, and presently pop and hip-hop/rap. Many rap artists today include themes of money, women, and drugs in their lyrics. Christian rap is a non-secular way to enjoy high quality music while receiving positive messages from the artist.
I do not believe that pop musicians have an obligation or responsibility to their audience, because only producing material for an audience that only enjoys that type of music is rather unfair to others, especially if that music artist wants to adapt. This is why I appreciate bands like the Gorillaz who produce songs of all genres (over 20!) in order to appeal to everyone. The artist is allowed to produce whatever they desire, and if the fans don 't like the newer content they 're free to listen to the content they did enjoy, because it 'll still be there and always will be there. If an artist didn 't grow like Bob Dylan did and only stuck to one type of music forever they 'd fade into obscurity at an incredibly fast rate because the fans would grow tired of
Cultures refers to the language, beliefs, values, beliefs, values, behavior and material objects that characterize a group and are passed from one generation to the next. And cultural patterns that are widespread among a society’s population is called - Popular Culture. In this study, we will focus on hip hop culture in the United State. It is safe to say that music is one of many things that we can’t live without.
Music is one surefire way of describing a culture. It touches every corner of the globe in its own way, reflecting societies and views over the years. The United States has gone through many changes throughout the generations. One style of music very near to our culture has been swing. Nowadays, record labels and artists cannot persuade listeners to ‘buy’ their music. It is believed that the aspect of music has changed due to the popularity of music streaming. Allen (2013) agreed by stating that music streaming has changed the view of people in the industry of music. For example, popular music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora and a number of new music streaming applications provide the easiest way for listeners to enjoy music freely without having to do illegal downloading or buying a CD. Likewise, Listeners have the ability to choose the music they want to listen.
Today in music, sex appeal is everything. The women
If you’re someone who enjoys listening to the radio, you may have wondered who decides what songs get played on the air. The answer lies in the influence of public relations. It’s a difficult task to please station listeners, artists, and the radio station itself, but the use of public relations can navigate this balance in pleasing as many people as possible through song plugging. Song plugging has been a part of the music industry for many years and it continues to evolve with technology innovation. Pluggers are what get songs broadcasted on the radio in a steady rotation.
With the rise of television and in-home electronics, the video generation was born. Movies like Pretty in Pink, Back to the Future, Star Wars, and Dirty Dancing were gaining extreme fame and inspiring the youth culture to follow its messages and trends. In music, MTV lead the way with music videos that propelled stars like Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, and Phil Collins into the stardom many wished for. Out of this came the rise of Pop and Hip-Hop, two defining genres that changed the trends and styles of the
“In contrast to old school rap, most of the new school rap of this decade involves lyrics that contradict each other or are just plain inaudible. Many songs involve mumble rap, a style of rapping that is really simple and includes inaudible words. Mumble rap started gaining popularity on Soundcloud, an online audio distribution platform. Through Soundcloud, many rappers, such as Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Pump, have risen to fame, primarily by releasing mumble rap. Songs such as ‘New Patek’ by Lil Uzi Vert and ‘Gucci Gang’ by Lil Pump involve a constant repetition of lyrics, as well as parts of the song that we are unable to understand what they are saying” (Avila).
The rapid incline in digital streaming services and their growing popularity amongst millions of users online validates the rise of digital services within the music industry. Although an ‘instant audience’ type of fan base can be formed through these social media platforms, with 30 million songs featured on Spotify and a further 20,000 added per day (Smith, 2017), it seems nearly impossible for Australian artists to stand out in
Musical milestones in popular music: Mobility between the Popular music and the Traditional/Cultural fields. Tahitian musicians easily adapt what they hear to their own musical repertoire (Yves Roche and Heitapu Chang, pers.comm., 25 September 2013), including jazz, American and French popular songs (from which the valse tahitienne [Tahitian waltz] genre emerged), blues-rock (leading to the “jeck” style in the 1960s) and rhythms derived from Latin music such as the bolero and the bossa nova, which infused in ʻukulele strumming. Coincidently with the adaptation of non-Polynesian musical genres during the twentieth century, Tahitian musicians have introduced Western musical instruments such as electric keyboards, beatboxes, and the electric guitar which Polynesians like playing with many effects, such as the echo (“Echoplex”). From these influences, Tahitians have composed their own repertoire, where the poetry, the emotional load and the lyrics phraseology prevail over musical originality. Literary arts, including ʻōrero, have had a deep influence
Pop music has a very unique and distinctive sound. The music is mostly up-tempo and dynamic. The frequencies and amplitude are always constantly changing. The equalization and reverberation in the music always seem to be on a different level compared to other genres of music. The reverb used in Pop music causes the sounds to seem far and out of space.
The pop 's motives are our real life like everyday culture, the world of consume, the mass media and the advertisement. The artists often name pop art 'anti-art ' which turns to trivialities. The pop artists ask for absolute reality, that means, all the elements have to be clean and clear objects. The most forms were bordered with black lines as in comic books. The objects are often plane like at poster, so demonstrated without deepness.
Apple has been able to capitalize off of the rapid explosion of the internet and social media, which is exemplified in their marketing of Apple Music. Apple uses a number of media outlets to market their music streaming service, such as Facebook and television. Although the marketing strategies used by music streaming companies have been successful in pulling in a large consumer-base, traditional methods of consuming music are still favored by some audiences. Apple Music and a traditional CD like Michael Jackson’s Thriller are both media objects that pertain to music in some capacity, and for this reason they ultimately all have a number of similarities and differences in their connections, strategies they employ to appeal to their ideal audience, and the message they convey. The first television advertisement ran in 1941 during a Dodgers-Phillies
The first song I have selected is Pinks “Stupid girls”. Popular culture created the image of women as girlish, following popular celebrities, should be fit in to the beauty standards of the popular culture which has created by the media. The social image and the perspective of the women has created with marketing purposes. For example, having a nice slim body, fair colour skin, wearing push up bras and having big boobs and butts,
