Holling Hoodhood Analysis

I read the book called the Wednesday wars by Gary D. Schmidt. The book is about a boy named Holling Hoodhood who is in seventh grade and his teacher, Mrs. Baker. The story takes place mainly in school or at Holling’s home. The first main event is when Holling finds out he is the only one that doesn't leave school early on Wednesdays because of Hebrew school or catechism. Also, when Holling let the rats go, it caused a lot of trouble through the story.

The main character in the book, “ Knights of the Hill Country”, is Hampton Greene, the star linebacker of the Kennisaw Knights football team. Hampton has two motivating factors throughout the story. One, to give Kennisaw their fifth straight undefeated season and two, to stay out of trouble so he can get a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. The first motivating factor Hampton has throughout the story is to give the small town of Kennisaw their 5th straight undefeated season. Hampton realizes that he is extremely crucial to the town, and wants to make history and go down as a Kennisaw great.

Throughout the book Knowles teaches the reader each of the boy’s has their struggles but, each boy also has their own unique strengths. For example, when Finny came to get Gene to go and watch Leper finally jump out of the tree and Gene could not go and watch that because he had to study

The audience gets involved in their life right when the film begins and one sees a dark New York. The aim of this film is to depict the struggle of being who you want to be, it portrays this by using rhetorical strategies (pathos, logos, ethos), film techniques (camera shots, angles, movement), and persuasive strategies. The movie “Boyz N’ the Hood” is a story centered on the issues that are seen in the urban areas of Los Angeles every day. Tre (the main character) is raised in a way that seems to be correct but he still ends up being a part of criminal activity. While watching this film in an academic setting it is easy to see the social and political reform messages that are being communicated to the audience. On the political side it is easy to see the race and ethnicity of the film maker while on the social side the audience can tell the filmmaker is spreading a message. All together “Boyz N’ the Hood” is a very good film that depicts the type of stuff that happens in the poorer parts of Los Angeles.

The book I have chosen to review is Boy 21, a fictional read that is written by Matthew Quick. Quick is a New York Times best-selling author debuting in novels such as The Silver Linings Playbook and Love May Fail. To best describe this book, it is a captivating read that is comforting for the mind, as it canvasses the raw and unflinching life of a high school senior who displays love for basketball and life relationships. Furthermore, set in a troubled Belmont city of Philadelphia, Quick incorporates the presence of mobs and violence which is captivating towards the reader and audience. I was intrigued about how the novel was written through Finley the main protagonist, which was Quick’s childhood perspective of life in Philadelphia and his passion towards basketball.

It is no longer only his ambition to reach it for himself. In realizing this new goal or ambition, the audience can interpret that the boy is going to thrive to complete

This illustrates the fear African Americans have in a white society. The movie then fasts forwards to New York City and turns the focus on Chris who is a successful young photographer.

One of these examples is, after he is kicked out of school he still continues to learn from books in the library. This shows that he will not give up on his education. Furthermore, when William is building his windmill people in the village think he is crazy, and they mock him constantly. But he does not let that stop him, he just uses it as fuel to keep going. On the other hand, sometimes William needed help to find the resolve to keep going.
