When asked to describe a hero, Mickey Mantle, famous baseball player for the New York Yankees, Said “Heroes are people who are all good with no bad in them” This quote shows that a hero is someone who always does the right thing and has good intentions. What a hero should look like now is someone who is loyal and brave. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus proves that he is a hero when he went to save his men on “Circe’s Island.” and defeated the cyclops in “The Cave of the Cyclops.”

In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst, creates a story about a boy named Doodle who was born with disabilities and his brother makes plans to kill him. In paragraph 5 on the first page of the story, Hurst writes, “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow.” This clearly makes readers think that the narrator wants him dead, and the narrator isn’t grateful for what kind of brother he has. This clearly brings up that it was the narrator 's fault that Doodle died. He left Doodle out in the storm on purpose and ran away, the narrator had plans to kill him earlier on in the story, and everyone expected Doodle to die right when he was born.

Heroes could be represented through divergent people. As I read the story A Hero in Disguise, it became clear to me that Harriet Tubman was a definite hero in my eyes. She was a heroin figure during times where slaves were owned. Harriet Tubman completed many assignments that helped multiple people through a difficult time. She guided many African Americans to freedom.

“‘Doodle!’ I screamed above the pounding storm and threw my body to the earth above his” (426). In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator, known as Brother, brings his younger brother, Doodle, to his destined death a little earlier in his life. Brother, being only thirteen, does not think very highly of his six year old younger brother Doodle. Doodle’s real name is William Armstrong but the narrator discovered his nickname when he sees him crawling backwards like a doodlebug.

Sometimes it 's the smallest decisions that can change your life forever. In "The Scarlet Ibis" James Hurst expresses the theme of death in his short. When he wrote "summer was dead and Autumn has not been born" it shows that there is a deep meaning to the story. Another example of death in his story is when Aunt Nicey said "red dead birds are bad luck" when the family sees the Scarlet Ibis fall out of a tree and die. It foreshadows the events that will happen in the storm because of brother leaving him behind.

Many people would describe a hero to be someone with a cape on their back saving the world from its terrors, but let's face it that isn’t reality. A hero is a person of any race, upbringing, wealth income, age, and so forth that has a good heart and does deeds purely for the help of others rather than the show of it. An example of this would be Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and Darry Curtis from the so called “hood” in a gang called the Greasers. Although they all have been through a lot and seen a lot in their years of living this has definitely shaped their minds and hearts on their actions. All in all, these young men have proven throughout the chapters one through six that they have these characteristics fit to be a hero.

Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Heroes exist in all societies and throughout history. Maybe they are not always on the news or from the movies, but their words and their actions never fail to resonate across their feats. A hero gives of himself and dedicates himself to causes which better others and their society unlike individuals who are self serving, greedy, and cruel.

A hero could be anyone. Heroes don’t have to shoot lasers or be able to fly. A hero could be someone who simply shows a great act or certain character trait like bravery or courage. Heroes go through a journey containing a call to adventure, a departure and a return to their homeland. A good example of heroism and heroic acts is David from the Chrysalids and Daniel from The Dangerous Days of Daniel X. David and Daniel experienced sacrifice, hardships and bravery through their journeys of becoming a hero.

Superman, Gandalf, Jay Gatsby, and Harry Potter. All of these character have something in common, all of them are heroes. Heroes are common in many literary works. They help portray messages and feelings in ways the reader would understand. There are three main archetypes of heroes.

A true hero does not disrespect others’ differences. In other words, a true hero is not rude or acting in a negative way to others who do not share common traits with them. In everyday life, this non-heroic action will look like being racist and not holding the door for them, mock a new classmate, or even bully someone. Well in the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, a group of nine year old students demonstrated this non-heroic trait. Unlike those nine year old students who were born and raised on Venus, Margot was born and raised on Earth until she settled on Venus five years earlier with her parents.

Reading “All Summer in a Day” was a very interesting but also sad story; the author had well explained the short story it felt like I was also there with them, but the only thing was I would have like to know what was going to happen at the end when she got out of the closet. Living in a planet where theirs no sun would be very depressing and sad because the sun has a huge impact on our day-to-day life. I feel sad when the sun doesn’t come out I feel that rainy days are the worst days, I don’t like it because it makes me feel sad and depressed. The children’s behaviour was surreal I couldn’t believe children would do that especially at such a young age.

A hero, by its literal definition, is "a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities". I know when most people think of a hero, they immediately think of comic books and big movie franchises. The Avengers, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and the list goes on and on. They're recognized as heroes because they use powers or abilities that were given to them or created by godly forces or money to do good deeds for their community, and sometimes the world. But real heroes are people who risk their lives, without a lot of money or superpowers, to save others without thinking about the consequences.
