Extreme hatred can cause chaos between people, and even be lethal. This is shown in the story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespare. Romeo, a Montague, falls deeply in love with Juliet, a Capulet. These families hated each other, and their love would be strictly forbidden. To get married in secret, Juliet pretends to have died. When Romeo sees this, he kills himself. Although some might say that the power of love was the main factor leading to Romeo’s death, the power of hatred affected his decision much more. The forces of hatred contributed more to Romeo’s death because it led to his banishment, caused miscommunications, and forbade him from seeing Juliet honestly. This can be seen in the fight scene between Romeo, Tybalt, and Mercutio. “Boy, this shall not excuse the …show more content…
“I shall believe that unsubstantial death is amorous, and that the lean abhorred monster keeps thee here in the dark to be his paramour?” (372). However, if it weren’t for the families hatred, Romeo and Juliet would be able to see eachother and get married honestly. “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet” (362). The sole reason that they can not be together is because of their last names. If a rose was called something else, it would smell the same, and Romeo would be the same person if he was not a Montague. The prince also believes that their hostility had a tragic outcome. “See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love” (374). Their loathing caused both of their children to be heartbroken since they were unable to be together. The prince states this to show that their grudges are childish and caused them to lose their loved ones. If the families could have put their differences aside, Romeo would most likely not have
To begin with, the grudge between the two families, Montague and Capulet, resulted in the children making their love discrete. It was clear that because of the feud, both families would not approve of the act. Juliet's father claims he will disown her if she doesn't marry the designated person who he deemed right to become her husband. He gave off the impression that he will disapprove of anyone else. The family riot has caused Romeo and Juliet's love to continue in secrecy which lead to foolish deeds and unfortunate death.
There has been an ongoing fight between the two families for years and since Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet their families do not want them to be together. “Who set this ancient quarrel abroach? Speak, nephew. Were you by when it began?” (Shakespeare 1.1 105)
Hate is a curse that destroys all things. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are on opposite sides of a grudge between two families, and eventually, they kill themselves. Romeo and Juliet fall in love during the story, but ultimately hate is the main factor that drives Romeo to kill himself. One reason hatred influenced Romeo to kill himself is Romeo's detestation for his name. In the passage, Romeo says, "My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself."
Love and hate might both influence Romeo to kill himself because the two had fallen in love, and the two families hate each other, but hate had a dominant role in this story of Romeo and Juliet. If it weren't for the two sides hating each other, this whole mess wouldn't be happening. Hate had a dominant role in the story of Romeo and Juliet because of the family rivalry. This shows us as the audience how strong the hatred is between the two families as it takes the life’s of their own children for them to stop this hatred.
One reason why the force of hatred had an influence on Romeo's death is because of the 2 feuding families. In the Prologue it states “two foes A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life; Whose misadventur’d piteous overthrows Doth with their death burying their parents’ strife.” This scene is talking about how Romeo and Juliet crossed paths and fell in love secretly
Romeo and Juliet's families hate each other and have had a feud for many years. Without this ancient feud Romeo and Juliet would have been able to freely love each other without having to be secret. Romeo's death was influenced by the hate between the two families. The reader is able to inference this from the Montague's and the Capulet's ancient feud. "
Displaying how the ancient animosity between the Montagues - Romeo’s family - and the Capulets - Juliet’s family - altered the fate of these star-crossed lovers. To begin, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, recognizes Romeo during the Capulet’s party as a strong desire to duel him forms. He demands that another hands him his rapier as Tybalt does “ hold it not a sin” to fight Romeo and “strike him dead” ( 1. 5. 52-57). This quote demonstrates a stagnant hatred that could potentially influence violence; violence Tybalt is willing to indulge in.

In Act 3 Scene 1 Tybalt wanted to fight Romeo
If the two lovers had been patient and rational, they may have found a way to be together without resorting to such drastic measures. The families of Romeo and Juliet also played a role in the tragedy. The two families were long-time rivals, and their feud prevented Romeo and Juliet from being together openly. The Capulets forced Juliet to marry Paris, and the Montagues were unable to accept their son's love for a Capulet. If the families had put aside their differences and accepted the love between Romeo and Juliet, the tragedy could have been avoided.

For example, when Tybalt kills Mercutio Romeo is angry and kills Tybalt because he is filled with hatred. The reason that they even fight is because of a old dispute between the two families. This dispute is the cause of many fights between the two families. This long time dispute is caused by a mutual hate between the two families and is why hate is stronger than love in this story.
Did the forces of love contribute more to Romeo’s death? Or did the forces of hatred have a stronger influence? Or both? I think that love and hatred were both strong and apparent causes of Romeo’s fate. I believe that if he had never met Juliet, or if he and Juliet’s families had never fought, that he probably wouldn't have died at such a young age.
