Harry Potter Hero's Journey

Joseph Campbell’s, The Hero’s Journey, appears in the foundation of modern hero tales, such as drama, storytelling, myth, and religious rituals. The first step in The Hero’s Journey is the Departure phase, it’s where the hero has an unusual birth or early childhood and is forced to leave their everyday life to face the challenges that await them. Next, is the initiation phase, it’s where the real challenges and trials occur. The hero has a mentor or guide who gives them a special weapon or advice so that when the hero faces the darkest part, the temptation to give up or quit, they will transform and achieve their goal. Lastly, the return phase is when the hero returns home and is able to recognize the experiences the hero had in the other world.

The Hero’s Journey Joseph Campbell has come up with this idea that there is one three-stage formula- in which he calls the “Hero’s Journey”. This formula is the structure of the story, and is the basic form or shape of something. Most houses have four walls and a roof, they all look slightly different on the outside, but they mostly share this basic structure. Campbell says that although most stories are different on the outside, stories are almost always structured around these three stages. The first stage is when the hero leaves their everyday world and enters into another world, the second stage talks about when the hero is challenged by opposing forces, a series of test they must pass, and whether or not a victory is won.

What do Harry Potter, Star, and The Wizard of Oz, all have in common? They all follow the Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey is a popular method of storytelling that has been used around the world for centuries. Joseph Campbell first noticed this in 1949 and put it in his book The Hero With a Thousand Faces. Many famous characters throughout history have followed what he outlined, including Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, which follows what Campbell described in his book.

Hero 's Journey an explanation of heros in every heros vs villians story. Starting of with how the hero was living before he/she even know they will be saving lives, calling it the ordinary world. This is simply for the audience to identify them by explaining their environment, heredity, and personal history. The hero has a call to adventure a call that can change this person 's life for either good or bad. This is to have some excitement in the story this can result in external pressure.

After, David killed Goliath, he went to live in a different town because his enemies were many. David was constantly chased by enemies from his hometown and neighboring villages. David had a friend whose name was Jonathan. Jonathan was a prince and his father were the king of Israel and one of David's enemies. David and Jonathan often hunted together and played games together.

Harry goes to class all pale and nervous and goes through the whole day. The day ends and he goes home expecting to get a call from the school that “your son has been smoking” but surprisingly that didn't happen and he got home went to his room and nothing happened. Harry goes through 4 whole days without smoking which was great for all the practice days he had. When harry then went to school the next day he had soccer in the afternoon. S the whole day goes by and he goes to the locker room changes and gets out before anyone else but he brings his cigarettes with him which was a bad idea that he didn't think he would get in trouble for.

Famine struck our resources which resulted in our nations exploration voyages. Eventually, the Kingdom received word of a new land that our Heavenly Father blessed upon us. The returning sailors would tell the townspeople that they followed the beam of the Sun shining through the crevice of thick ominous clouds while noticing an acclivity below it in the distant waters. They continued sailing until it amassed into an expanse of their entire field of vision. What they described was a divine and fruitful sight sent by God himself, and they swore that whoever goes there would forget all their woes.

Michael Shermer, a science writer and historian of science said, “Humans are pattern-seeking story-telling animals, and we are quite adept at telling stories about patterns, whether they exist or not.” In J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, the main protagonist, joins a group of dwarves to recover their lost, forgotten gold from Smaug the dragon. Joseph Campbell’s A Hero with a Thousand Faces, he states that many legendary heros follow a pattern in their adventures. Matthew Winkler has his own ideas of the heroic quest pattern, stating the hero's follow a pattern of eleven stages. Both The Hobbit and the heroic journey have similar elements with departure, initiation and then return.

Percy Jackson, the main character in The Lightning Thief ,is following the path of the hero in “Hero’s journey” On Percy’s life a teacher has become his mentor. In the Lightning Thief Percy says “But Mr.Brunner expected me to be as good as everybody else, despite the fact that I have dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and I had never made above a C- in my life” In this quote, percy expresses his feelings on how he is frustrated with himself and his teacher. In hero's journey a quote shows about mentors, “Heroes are almost started on their journey by a character who has mastered the laws of the outside world and come back to bestow this wisdom upon them.” That is how The Lightning Thief is compared to hero's journey.

Along with the evidence found for admirable qualities. Harry has guts being sneaky and clever. For example, when Harry went out past his curfew with the invisibility cloak on. Trying to find answers about Nicolas Flamel. Only problem is it's in the restricted section of the library.

Harry Potter’s narrative follows Campbell’s pattern. In Harry’s case, he is living with his Muggle relatives, when letters from Hogwarts arrive to notify him that he has been accepted to the wizarding school (cf. Ahmed, 2012,
