In the article, The Argument Gun Rights Supporters Can’t Respond To published by Current Affairs and written by Nathan J. Robinson, provides readers with avid arguments towards the support of gun control. Robinson compares guns to a “magic death app” and destroys every argument made by gun rights supporters. I agree with every statement that Robinson made despite the absurdity of them. I especially appreciated the statement “If someone had a button on his desk with a skull and crossbones on it, that could instantly vaporize anyone in the room, that person would probably be thought of as deranged. And yet if an executive keeps a gun in his desk, he is treated as legitimately exercising his right to self-defense.” This quote helps readers to comprehend just how normalized we have become to these “killing machines.” …show more content…
“Yet there is no principled difference whatsoever between the death app and a gun. Each allows anyone to kill anyone at the touch of a button. Each confers upon the individual a kind of “magic wand” that can disappear another human being with a mere touch. The pull of a trigger, the swipe of a screen. Guns are like Tinder for death instead of sex.” This paragraph simply highlights the absurdity of gun rights activists. Robinson also touches on the argument, “If guns and the death button are so horrible, why aren’t knives?” He manages to shut down this argument with a few sentences my favorite of which being “Attempts at mass murder by knife end up with somewhat lower fatality
In paragraph seven, she presents the case that people that have lived without guns should not be overlooked as snooty just because they have lived without them. She uses rhetorical questions to justify her position that gun ownership is not a cultural tradition, but rather just about the act of owning guns itself, “I mean, must it really be spelled out what’s different? It’s absurd to reduce an anti-gun position to a snooty aesthetic preference.”, and also defends her position by rejecting the opposing viewpoint. Paragraph ten features another rhetorical question that involves a call to action from the reader after explaining the goal of banning all guns, and why the act is not impossible she says, “That could never happen, right? Well, certainly not if we keep on insisting on its impossibility.”
It becomes apparent that the standard for humane actions can be easily skewed with a majority of a social group being instilled with fear. Inhumane actions can easily seem humane if everyone believes it. In any case, murder is not accepted by the laws of society and is a cruel act of hate. In Malcom Gladwell’s work, he discusses the murderer Bernie Goetz, and how he was able to get away with murder, with his name in good standing, because he murdered what many people feared. Gladwell describes the way the people in the city perceive Goetz’ actions when he says “They seemed the embodiment of the kind of young thug feared by nearly all urban-dwellers, and the mysterious gunman who shot them down seemed like an avenging angle” (150).
Although, “Gun Control That Actually Works,” is a short piece of text, the reader only gets provided with one idea. The short article is filled with useful information about the acts and laws of guns, however, it never really uses any emotion while explaining the problem. Throughout the years, gun violence has affected millions directly and indirectly. To truly convince the readers of the point Alan was making he should have included pathos in his argument. The article, “End the Gun Epidemic in America,” The Editorial Board, demonstrated the argument with pathos by her first line, “All decent people feel sorrow and righteousness fury about the latest slaughter of innocents, in California.”
Many pro gun-control citizens believe that banning firearms will make them safer and some even protest. For reasons of self-defense, to assist the police, and because violence will always be present, the United States’ law regarding the legality of firearms should stay in place. One of the many uses of firearms is self-defence. “Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals
In recent times, gun violence amongst the American people have become evermore prevalent. Just this past year, the lives of many innocent people have been taken due to the senseless acts of gun owners in America. While killing someone with a gun is illegal, the real issue lies in the fact that owning the gun is not, because all American citizens have the right to bear arms. The issue with this, is that not every citizen has the
Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. Many believe this, but columnist Nicholas Kristof, author of “Our Blind Spot about Guns,” published in 2014 in the New York Times, disagrees. A rhetorical analysis should consist of: logos, pathos, and ethos. Kristof’s use of logos is strong due to the amount of facts and statistics he offers to his audience, but he fails to strongly use pathos and ethos, due to the lack of these elements Kristof’s argument is weakened.
Imagine enjoying a nice party at your local cabana, only for you to hear a loud bang, and look over to see your friend lying on the ground, dead. This problem you are facing is known as gun control, and is a issue that has faced the U.S for many years. gun control is the debate on whether or not laws around guns should be tightened or not. Today, I will prove to you what gun control is, who is affected by it, and what we can do to solve it. Gun control is a problem that tends to occur very often in the past few years, and is affecting the U.S very badly.
A big argument that gun rights advocates make is “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” Gun control advocates say that this argument is not good because people would more than likely end in one death, but guns can add up to more deaths. People get the argument wrong and assume that its talking about just the gun. The argument is saying that the people are the ones killing the people.
Gun violence in the United States Gun violence is violence committed with the use of a gun (firearm or small arm). It may or may not be considered criminal. Every day there is a victim of gun violence in the US, rather by homicides, slain by rival gangs, drug dealers, robbers, a bar fight, a family member, abusive partners, and much more.
“The Actions Taken to Reduce Gun Violence” “Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror.” Guns are bringing too much horror to this world. Guns are being used to bring too much harm and they must be controlled.
Society as a whole has become less and less violent. Since 1991, reported crimes committed has dropped by almost double (Statista.com). Many people blame the AR-15 for most of the mass murders in America, and ask for the “assault” weapon to be banned. However, many details of the gun are skewed. In an article written by Margot Sanger-Katz of The New York Times, she stated that of all the gun deaths in America, 60% were suicides; and even more contrary to belief, nearly double of the mass killings (4 or more deaths) were with handguns instead of rifles (statista.com).
Recently, a miserable mass-shooting incident in Las Vegas has caused 58 deaths and approximately 500 injuries which was the fatalist gun-related incident in history of the United States (CBS NEWS, 2017). Besides, the number of gun violence incidents has increased from 51,882 in 2014 to 58,784 in 2016 (Gun Violence Archive, 2017). The stunning incident and the upsurge in gun violence in the recent years provoke much public debate about whether guns should be ban completely in the United States. Waldman (2017), a senior writer of The American Prospect Magazine and a blogger of The Washington Post, suggested only allowing a small group of people who have special need to own their private gun like in other Asian countries in order to stop heavy casualties caused by guns every year. Maltz Bovy (2015), the author of ‘’The Perils of Privilege’’, agreed to ban guns completely with a view to forbid guns from entering the realm of possibility.
Boyd states that people all over the world need to understand the damage guns may have on our society and they can be used for good, but they can also be used for evil. For instance, Boyd shows that guns may be used for protection or just for shooting at a range, however people with wicked, deceived ways can find ways to inflict possible damage to our culture and nation. Neil Boyd also explains how the younger generation can be affected due to their exposure for possible weaponry due to the immaturity of the youth in our culture the chances and percentage of harm due to guns may possibly increase. Moreover, Gary Cleck wrote an article titled “Why do people support gun control?” in which he also explains society’s view on gun control that is mostly positive in supporting gun control.
Ever since the inception of this country 240 years ago, guns have been an integral part of the American identity; a sense of lawlessness, individualism, personal autonomy and freedom. They were the tools that liberated us, and gave us independence over a tyrannical, unrepresentative empire. However, in more recent years, these tools have been used more and more frequently in mass shootings, some of which are occurring at schools, targeting teachers and children. Since the infamous shooting at Columbine High School 19 years ago, we have had several shootings at schools, and we tend to get “thoughts and prayers”, a gesture with good intentions, but little actual progress made. This problem can be contributed to the increasing power of guns, and a lack of mental health coverage, gun
Every so often, there will be an event that will change your thoughts and perspective on a particular topic. The recent shootings at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida has led me to rethink my opinions on gun control as a whole. It is no surprise that mass shootings happen; from when I was in eighth grade and Adam Lanza 20 elementary school kids and 6 staff members, to my first year of college when Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people. These horrific mass murders may seem like a common thing to us but this is not normal worldwide, this is only a common thing here in the United States.
