Gun Control Man, did you see that gun kill that dude, says no one ever. Did the gun suddenly grow a mind of its own? No! The tool doesn 't commit the crime, the person who uses the tool commits such. America has the right to bear arms and to keep her gun 's, but something needs to be changed when it comes to gun laws. Guns are not the problem, it 's the gun laws that are the issue. Gun laws are weak, there has been more shootings than ever before. And there 's no unity to create a solution. We begin with how most gun control arguments begin with. A tragedy. A young teen at the age of fifteen named Monica lost her friend who was shot from another teen leaving behind a four-month-old daughter. Monica now at age eighteen is shocked that a …show more content…
"Guns are why we 're free in this country and people lose sight of that when tragedies like this happen" says Scott Ostrosky. He also stated, " A gun didn 't kill all those children. A disturbed man killed all those children." Tragedies like these shootings are the purest example that we need to make sure that the wrong people do not get their hands on these tools. And they are the purest example that gun laws are weak and so are background checks. Advocates of gun control say that the recent shootings prove that the Nations gun laws are way too weak (Smith, Patricia). Ladd Everitt of the Coalition to stop gun violence tells that these tragedies expose how weak our gun laws are. Ladd Everitt says that our laws are inadequate and utterly insane (Smith, …show more content…
Supreme Court overturned the District of Columbia 's thirty-two – year ban on handguns in 2008, a victory for the gun- rights lobby that seemed to promise a more permissive era in America 's long tussle over gun ownership." (Fields, Gary). The battle over whether residents can own firearms has been replaced by a new debate over whether lawmakers can restrict legal gun ownership. "Nobody thinks we would have fewer shootings and fewer homicides if we had more relaxed gun laws." (Fields, Gary). Kenneth Barnes lost his son in 2001, his son was shot and killed. Kenneth Barnes supports his city 's current gun law. "I have no issue with the right to bear arms" but the Supreme Court 's decision gave the city the right to set gun laws for its citizens, he said. (Fields, Gary). In 2009, law in effect, homicides in the city dropped to 143 from 186 in 2008. Also 2009 was the lowest since 1966. Between 200 million and 350 million, which results in a rate between 65,000 to 114,000 guns per 100,000 people
Chicago should be an example to those on both sides of the gun argument. The city is living proof that strict gun regulations alone will not cause gun violence to go down. Unfortunately for gun control advocates, the ban on handgun ownership in Chicago was struck down in a landmark case known as McDonald v. City of Chicago. Two years ago, in District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. ___, this Court held that the Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms for the purpose of self-defense and struck down a District of Columbia law that banned the possession of handguns in the home.
The state and region that individuals live in greatly determine their opinions on how gun control and amendment application should be interpreted. A study was done 4 months after the sandy hook mass shooting where children were killed, the study determined the belief of gun control after this tragedy. The researcher Kevin H. Wozniak found that, “ [only] a slim majority of Americans favors a semiautomatic weapon ban and proposals to make gun control laws stricter,” (Wozniak 2). Even directly after a mass shooting there is only a slim majority on a weapons ban. This makes it clear that the beliefs of guns in American culture are too deeply rooted and the county has become too dependant on them.
If you haven’t been keeping up with today’s debates, then I advise you should. You might know many of the top topics that people have always argued over for a hundred years now like abortion, the legal drinking age, and the death penalty, but what I am going to talk about is none of these, I’ve chosen instead everyone’s favorite topic which of course is gun control! Gun control has been a huge topic of discussion in the United States today. Recently, there has been many unpleasant events that have happened involving guns, and if you haven’t kept up much with the news and are wondering why is this certain issue being brought up a lot here recently? Then let me to tell you.
Gun control is a major problem/controversy in America right now. People are getting killed and the way they are getting killed is by gun. They blame the gun for the murder, but I mean is it really the guns fault? That’s like saying a guy with no arms or legs was walking on the sidewalk eating something with his arms. Recently, gun control has been involved in places such Missouri, New York, Los Angeles etc.
Statistics show that comparable to other democratic nations the United states has a higher proportion of gun related violent incidents than those states where gun control legislation has been adopted. An example would be the case of the United Kingdom, which had approximately 2,261 Violence Against the Person (VAP) Offences involving firearms, including low velocity Air weapons in 2015/16 . If this is then compared to the United States which had, in the same period, 9,616 gun related murders and a million VAP offences that did not end in a fatality, then it can be argued that the NRA’s outdated mantra is illogical . There are many further problems with the NRA argument that can be identified in the modern era. , but the main issue would be the NRA’s reasons for the existence of the Amendment.
However, a definite solution still has not been reached and America is split on the topic. The solutions currently enacted focus on guns, yet America still has a serious issue with gun related crime attacks, and fatalities. Solutions should not solely target the actual guns, because guns are powerless without the person who fires the weapon. The solution should not be to take away guns, but to consider the people who have access to them. Addressing mental health is the real solution to preventing gun violence and attacks.
America today is divided. Many topics are dividing the people, but I came to put one to rest. Since 1950, every public mass shooting has occured in a place that doesn’t allow weapons (Davis). The only thing gun control does is take away our rights of the constitution and the right to defend ourselves. Gun control within the states is ineffective.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
main problems summarized are non effective resolutions, the fact that guns are not the leading cause of death in the US,and that there are already organizations in place making sure that the laws work. The first point I made was that that what the other sides solutions are flawed and don 't work. For example In Australia after the largest mass shooting in Australian history in 1996 they made laws banning semi -
With America owning over two hundred and seventy million guns, gun control has been a complicated issue for years. Not only is it a popular debate topic, but it is also a common political issue. Although there are several opinions, there are two clear umbrellas; those for gun control, and those against it. On average, there are over 90 gun deaths per day in the US. This isn’t a political issue; it’s a safety issue.
Gun Control in America Gun control in America is a highly debated subject. James Wilson speaks against gun control in his article “Gun Control Isn’t the Answer”. Gun laws need to be more restricted. Gun control reform is needed to safeguard children and prevent access to those with mental illness and a criminal background. Wilson talks about the shooting at Virginia Tech using it as a platform to talk about people not weapons being responsible for the tragedy.
Over recent years mass school shootings and terrorist attacks have increased, but taking away gun rights is not the solution to the issues. Guns do not pull their own triggers; the people holding them do. Guns are not responsible for the damage caused by the people wielding them, and taking them away would leave law abiding citizens defenseless, as shown
Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
The debate around gun laws in the United States has been a long-debated topic. From the Second Amendment to the effectiveness of gun laws in reducing gun violence, the pros and cons of more gun laws have been hotly contested. In this essay, I will discuss three topics related to the pros and cons of more gun laws: the effectiveness of gun laws in reducing gun violence, the impact of gun laws on Second Amendment Rights, and the impact of gun laws on gun ownership and accessibility. Gun laws have long been a contentious issue in the United States, and their efficacy in reducing gun violence has been widely debated. A study sought to examine the effects of gun laws on gun violence.
The fact that the 2nd amendment allows certified citizens to bare arms makes it understandable that a family will possess a firearm to protect their family or to utilize it for recreational purposes. However, I find it grossly unfair that countless young Americans die every year through the use of gun violence. Incidents continue to rise, with more than 50,000 individual cases and over 250 mass shootings occurred in a single year according to the Gun Violence Archive 2017. Armed with these facts, one cannot deny that America is facing one of its greatest challenges of its time with gun violence. Instead of having an open-minded discussion, the American people continue to be divided more than ever, with clear distinctions on political issues.
