Gretchen Carlson’s powerful Ted Talk describes how sexual harassment in work places has become something ordinary for thousands of women. Carlson uses Monroe’s Motivated Sequence to present each argument in her presentation. For instance, to get the audience’s attention, Carlson starts off her presentation by describing real life scenarios in which women were harassed by their male co-workers or bosses. This strategy is an outstanding way of getting the audience’s attention because what Carlson is saying is raw and makes the audience feel uncomfortable. Furthermore, Carlson continues to develop Monroe’s Motivated Sequence by describing the problem and that there is a need to change it. In this case, the main problem is the ongoing battle
In “Crime and Punishment: The saga of Richie Parker” published in Sports Illustrated, Gary Smith helps to explain just how many people are affected by a single sexual assault case. He does this in a very unique style by giving 12 sections explaining the incident from different points of view and the effects of a single crime. One person affected was Jill Agostino, the sports copy editor for Newsday. Her unnamed colleague had given her a copy of an article he was writing on Richie Parker and called asking if she liked it. Little did he know, stories like his were keeping her up at night, reminding her of the time she was raped nine years earlier.
In her magazine article, “No, #MeToo Isn’t McCarthyism,” found in the January 2018 issue of The Atlantic, writer Sophie Gilbert refutes various criticisms targeting #MeToo, a recent social media campaign created to spread awareness of the frequency of sexual harassment and assault. She distinguishes serious sexual assault and harassment allegations from claims against men who are merely unpleasant by noting that the former is comprised of rape accusations, while the latter is only “a collection of misconduct allegations and rumors” (2). Critics of #MeToo have attempted to undermine the movement by arguing that it is a facade to allow people to falsely accuse others of sexual harassment and assault. As a result, the accused usually suffer from
In 2017, many women began to come forward about sexual abuse and misconduct. Multiple Hollywood stars have been accused of some sort of sexual abuse or misconduct in the past year, including Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein is a big time Hollywood star that has been known to have a temper. Other Hollywood stars such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Rose McGowan, have all spoken out against Weinstein. An article by Janine Rubenstein that was published in People magazine tells of these horrifying events.
When the attacker finds out that the victim spoke up they will likely use scare tactics as a way to frighten them, such as, when Andy confronted Melinda in the janitor’s closet. This dose of reality is important for rape victims to encounter before experiencing it first-hand because if it was not expected it can deter them from continuing to speak up. Along with intimidating aspects of coming forward, Anderson also shows the reader that moving on is a possibility and that if the victim is persistent it will get better when people see the
Defense attorneys in cases of sexual assault often “attack the victim’s credibility - the time-honored rape defense that so often results in an acquittal” (Krakauer 136). Diminishing the victim’s credibly and highlighting the standing of the accused are both methods that defense attorneys, like Donaldson’s lawyer, use to win cases of sexual
Accompanying her reasoning as to why it is wrong she shares, "Women are excluded from some State colleges and universities." and "Women even receive heavier criminal penalties than men who commit the same crime. " This inflicts towards the audience that gender discrimination is wrong because while men are given an easy path to stroll through in life women are having to fight to even get a general education. She states that even though laws were established for crime, men have a simpler way to go about their charges while women are being prosecuted to the highest extents. Persuasive techniques in the sense of ethics is used to move the audience to an understanding of what is morally being done wrong in the situation.
Motivational Speeches Monroe’s Motivated Sequence, which has five steps, is used to design a motivational speech to present change in behavior. In the following paragraph I will explain each step using getting nontraditional students to go to college. The attention step is where you would explain how you are never too old to achieve your goals. Online colleges make it easier to go back to school without having to leave family which I feel will get the audience’s attention.
Anita Hill 's graphic testimony was a turning point for gender equality in the U.S. and ignited a political firestorm about sexual misconduct and power in the workplace that still resonates today. Against a backdrop of sex, politics and race, Anita reveals the intimate story of a woman who spoke truth to power.
Sexual harassment claims in violation of Title VII were first addressed in Meritor Savings Bank v Vinson. This case marked the Supreme Court’s recognition of certain forms of sexual harassment as a violation of the Civil Rights act of 1964 Title VII, and established what forms of conduct could be seen as unlawful and in what instances an employer would be held liable. After being fired from her job at Meritor Savings Bank, Michelle Vinson sued the vice president of the bank alleging that he had coerced her to have sexual relations with him and made demands for sexual favors while at work. Vinson stated that she had sex with the vice president over forty times and testified that he had touched her in public, exposed himself to her, and raped her multiple times. Vinson argued that these conditions created a hostile working environment and that they were a form of unlawful discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights
The cultural and economic differences in women, recognition of the movement by a celebrity’s input and the influential impact of affluent women to cause a change are the main issues surrounding the article. ‘The Marginalized voices of the #MeToo movement’ is an article written by Eugene Scott on December 7, 2017, of a movement created for women of color to feel comfortable to speak out on sexual harassment issues. This movement gained recognition when actress Alyssa Milano tweeted #MeToo, but it was actually started a decade ago by Tarana Burke an activist from the Bronx. As more popular women went on to express their views on sexual harassment and share their experience it is believed now that the light is being taken away from the women in
We must feel that we belong to a cause bigger than ourselves, whether that cause is with religion, culture, sports, etc. However, we also must feel that we, as individuals, are worthy to live and that we matter to the rest of society. Jake Sully created a unique identity for himself as a leader and as a fearless Na’vi warrior. Especially in this day and age, we are constantly being compared to others and being judged according to society’s standards. Without a unique identity, we will be lost in society’s expectations of us.
Sexual harassment and sexual assault are very serious issues happening today in the workplace. Women or men have suffered from unsolicited sexual behaviors that are typically provoked by someone “higher” in position. “Sexual harassment especially has been a fixture in the workplace since women began to work outside their homes” (Fitzgerald, 1993). It is solely the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all employees within are aware and are very cautions of laws, misconduct, and liabilities. Employers must enforce the Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and further extend those laws and guidelines to their employees.
Sexual harassment is identified as any unwelcome and unwanted sexual advances, verbal or physical behavior of sexual nature and requesting for sexual favours due to which a worker’s performance is affected, he/she suffers from psychological trauma or an offensive/hostile atmosphere is created at the workplace. The occurrence of workplace sexual harassment is linked with several risk factors. The nature of job and particularly the gender ratio at a workplace and traditionally male oriented jobs are among the significant ones. These pose an increased risk for women to face situations of getting sexually offended or harassed.
Stories engage an audience by inviting them into a world that is not their own. One way to tell a story is to “blow the breath of life back into it” , this highlights the importance of taking something that has already happened and telling it in a way that makes it seems as though it is the presence. When telling the stories of women who have been personally affected by the sex industry, I envision myself inviting high schoolers to put themselves in the shoes of these women and to imagine what it would be like. I strongly believe that stories are a gateway to engaging an audience. Imagine telling the story of a woman who was forced to film pornographic content, so that a student could watch it for their entertainment.
Given these points, as Judith Butler said, “It would be a mistake if the sexual harassment law movement is the only way which feminism is known in the media.” This meant that none of these crimes should be known as an idea of feminism because of its true value in history. These acts are considered sexists in a behavioral manner which causes a greater uproar within
