On April 4th, 1865 Union troops invaded Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama. The university taught Confederate military tactics along with academics. Because of its military nature it was a huge target and a threat for the Union army. After the invasion most of the campus was left in turmoil and burned. Four miraculous buildings were able to survive the burning. Those four included the President’s mansion, Round House, Observatory, and the Gorgas House (War Comes to UA). It was a warm October day when I visited the Gorgas House. The weather being shockingly warm for fall. With the leaves starting to turn and the sounds of nearby students walking by. All of these long standing buildings share a rich history that dates back to the pre Civil War era. The Gorgas House is the oldest standing. This structure has been apart of the growth and history of this university and has held various uses with its time. There were seven original campus buildings when the campus was first built. The Gorgas House was the first. When old images of the house are observed the viewer will notice how desolate the building once was and how it stood on its own. The building used to be hidden amongst tons of trees. There also was a fence that surrounded the property much like the one that stands now. Today, it is surrounded by many other academic buildings and streets. The house has maintained the same look and foundation exteriorly for the past century and will continue to look this way as time
For this architectural comparison, I will be going deep into the comparing and contrasting of two iconic American homes, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and President Donald Trump’s Mar a Lago Florida home. Although these two beautiful homes serve the same primary function, they are intrinsically different, as seen through their history and rich architectural styles. First, are the necessary facts to be familiar with regarding the two homes. Thomas Jefferson was the architect of his own home, Monticello, located outside Charlottesville, VA. The four tree houses are made from local wood and are open to the air. Their simple square shape allows students to focus on learning, while the fresh allows them to connect with nature and be outside, even when they are in the classroom. The building on the island is even more minimalistic. It looks more like a cabana than classroom, and is completely open to the air. The open sides allow students to see the ocean as they learn about different aspects of it, and allows them to easily transition from the classroom to the ocean.

Upon entry, you are greeted with a large steel and brick gate protecting the owners from any potential, unwanted company. A long, beautify paved, cream driveway leading you into your palace. Not near as old as the first few buildings, it still holds a significant historical input and change within Iowa State University’s walls. There is a quote that tells of this historical value, “The History behind this building can be seen in the structures architectural brilliance and function as if it was still 1892”(Wordpress.com). This building was designed by Joselyn and Taylor of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and was constructed by Whiting and Wood (PDF file). (Describe the materials used). It is a style of building called Queen Anne Revival, and it has a very unique style to it.
The first 7 houses were connected and inside were stone dressers, beds, cabinets, and seats. The 8th house was slightly different. It was divided into sections that led archeologists to believe it may have at one time been a workshop.
