Throughout life, there is a constant struggle between antagonistic items. These items could be light and dark, peace and war, or sunshine and rain. However, there are two antagonistic items that are the route of all problems throughout the world: good and evil. While good and evil are found in many aspects of life, throughout history, even from the times of Adam and Eve, these two items have been the center of Christianity. With good and evil being the base of the struggles that Christians faced throughout history, the plots of many stories were centered upon exploring those who could not overcome such struggles. Such plots can be found in the writings of Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Good …show more content…
Generally speaking, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is about a grandmother who is trying to build up her faith when she only has a few more minutes to live because her “strong faith” throughout her life was only superficial. On the opposite side of the spectrum, “Young Goodman Brown” is about the loss of faith (due to temptation) in someone who was once very strong in their religion. Additionally, while the grandmother’s faith was not as strong until the end, she still kept ahold of prayers until her last breath. Young Goodman Brown, on the other hand, lost sight of God when he needed him the most and more easily fell to the temptation brought about by the Devil. While both stories show changes in the characters due to evil, the grandmother does not have to live with her change that would have actually been good. Though she does not have to live with her change, O’Connor is implying that the grandmother will reach salvation in heaven. However, Young Goodman Brown has to live with his decision that was ultimately choosing evil. Whether or not the events in the forest were real or just a dream, Browns life is now characterized by the inability to find a way to the realities of society and he lacks the trust in anyone, including his wife (Rowshanzamir, 113). Beyond living a faithless life, “Young Goodman Brown” ends with Hawthorne implying that Brown is going to Hell. Hawthorne states that an unhopeful verse was carved in Browns tombstone because his death was just as unfaithful as his life. (Hawthorne, 8). While the grandmother and Brown both fall into the hands of evil, each deal with evil differently which results in the differences in each of their lives after the encounter with
Redemption is the act of being saved from acts of evil and sin. The debate of whether human nature is redeemable or not has been one to plaque religious scholars. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, this question continues in the interactions between the characters; the most notable being the Grandmother of a rather horrible family and the Misfit, a murderer. While on a road trip, these two characters’ paths collide and lead to a rather unfortunate end where the Grandmother and her family are killed. While many readers believe the ending creates and overall negative tone of the story, some believe that there is a hope for redemption; the story’s author O’Connor who is a devoted Catholic included.
In the short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" the grandmother's superficial goodness towards other individuals is significant to contrast with the evil "The Misfit" obtains. For the duration of the story, the grandmother fears "The Misfit" and strives to avoid the evil he possesses; however, we learn it is inevitable that his existence will eventually encompass her when they make acquaintance. The Misfit seamlessly endangers others with the careless actions he perpetrates, and in return, displays minimal remorse. Readers of the story may easily be perplexed by the motives the Misfit obtains to commit heinous acts onto innocent victims; however, lack of religious conscience, moral blindness and intermittent conversation with the grandmother
Do you believe that everyone is born good? Immoral acts can be extremely tempting. Not everyone is strong enough to resist giving into the evils of the world. In A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor, the main theme that prejudice and sin can overshadow the goodness in a person, unless a conscious effort is made to be good, is shown through the thoughts and actions of the grandmother, Red Sam, and the Misfit.
In the 1953 short story titled “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, readers are given a glimpse of what the end of the story may look like through use of foreshadowing, symbolism, and other literary techniques. Although the story looks to be an innocent story of a family who travels to Florida for vacation at the start of it, readers soon find out that the story has a darker twist to it. This family trip turns violent and this gruesome ending can easily represent the violence taking place in America during the time this story was written by O’Connor and even today. The short story starts off with a family of six- parents, a grandmother, and three children-
In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” she uses writing skills such as symbolism and imagery to get across her different themes to the reader’s with plenty of room for self-interpretation. Though O’Connor’s work could be defined as cynical, she does an excellent job of writing in the third person with her uncomplicated structure of sentences leaving plenty of room for her character 's thoughts, feelings, and actions to get across the realism of our world. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is a battle between a grandmother with a rather artificial sense of goodness, and a criminal who symbolizes evil. The grandmother treats goodness as having good manners, and coming from a family of higher class, but at the end of the story comes to
Upper Saddle Riva: Prentice Hall, 1988. 376-385. Hawthorne, Nathaniel proves how a young, pure and happy soul, hit by disappointment on false ideals of the Puritan society is expressing a sin bitter contempt. If Brown, when he leaves his house in the village, he is perfectly integrated in a society that
“A Good Man Is Hard To Find”: Characters Qualities and their Changes Flannery O’Connor’s short story A Good Man Is Hard To Find tells about the end of Bailey’s family; it is called by father’s first name as the author did not mention characters’ last name. The man’s mother, hereafter referred to as the Grandmother, did not want to go to Florida and preferred to visit places of her youth. Woman’s contumacy led to the car accident; she took her cat to the trip and the pet disturbed the driver. After that the family met with escaped convicts led by the criminal called Misfit and were killed by them.
Another difference in the stories are in the way celebration is held and the reason behind it. In “Young Goodman Brown” there is a celebration; a gathering amongst the townspeople but the gathering is not for sharing happy moments rather they gather as sinners. Everyone in the gathering has sinned one way or another. While in “The Prodigal Son” the celebration involved the slicing of a calf to rejoice over the return of the prodigal son. This difference in celebration shows how difference the stories are and how celebration for goodness and celebration for evil reveal a person’s true

The balance of what is good and what is bad is a rather controversial topic in the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find". Most notably, the characteristics of both the Grandmother and the Misfit. The Misfit portrays an immoral personality and seems to be the evil in the story while the grandmother is the innocent lady seeking to be the good in this story. However, the religious virtues effect both personas and in itself draws the line around them mutually as sinners. Both characters have a particular relationship with Jesus, a physical crisis crossed with a spiritual crisis and different conceptions of reality; thus, revealing how the portrayal of these characters are not what may seem.
The short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is revolved around many distortions that the author O’Connor creates to build meaning within the story. The novel presents characters that are characterized through many different symbols that result in an uncanny feeling for the reader. O’Connor’s “place” is the distortion in the story that causes conflict, creating the uncanny feeling in the story. O’Connor’s “place” also represents a different variety of symbols, creating the necessary meaning of the psychological realism. O’Connor utilizes distortion to create meaning in the story within her characters who represent the conflicts within the Catholic Church and dramatizes it with a complicated sense of humor.
A Questionable Flaw In a fight between good versus evil, good is the recurring victor. However, when the good and evil are fighting within oneself, the outcome is not as desired as we wish it would be. Abraham Lincoln once said, “I would rather be a little nobody than an evil somebody.” Although good should definitely triumph evil, most people struggle between the two and it is a recurrent flaw.
In her short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor introduces the reader to a world of family issues, danger, and murder. The story was written in 1955 during a period of social and racial unrest in the southern United States. Mostly, the story follows O 'Connor 's basic Southern Gothic writing style. A work that is "cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent" (Galloway). While the quote gives major insight into the theme of the story, it does not offer a glimpse into O 'Connor 's real message of the story.
Throughout the course of literature class, we have to read articles, stories, and poems then analyze them and make a response toward a few questions on the readings. One story that caught my attention and intrigues me the most is “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” by Flannery O’Connor. The story is about a family that consists of a Grandmother that is selfish, a critic, demanding, and determine to get whatever she wants. Bailey is the son of the grandmother and the father of June Star and John Wesley. Bailey mostly ignores his mom for many reasons but overall is very quiet.
The human race is constantly evolving. Yet, we struggle to learn what the true meaning of good and evil is. These two simple words should be easy enough to define, yet they have the most ambiguous meanings. No one can truly say what is good or evil, but Flannery O’Connor, a writer that lived from 1925 to 1964, provides an accidental moral lesson through her stories that may be able to explain why human fail truly define these words.
