1. Great Leaders lead their people toward a desired goal that uplifts the morale of the subordinates. In the movie (Glory), the film began with Colonel Robert Gould Shaw leading a regiment to attack the confederacy in the bloody war of Antietam. Colonel Shaw was injured in the battle and was assumed dead. Many souls were lost on both sides and dead soldiers were scattered across the battlefield. The horrifying battle scenes from the war developed Colonel Shaw leadership characteristics, instilled discipline, and braveness in his attitude. After the battle of Antietam Captain Robert was found alive by an African American gravedigger named John Rawlins and was sent to a hospital for treatment. During a family and friends gathering, Colonel …show more content…
At the age of 25 Colonel Robert Gould Shaw leadership philosophy made him capable of commanding a fresh regiment of recruits and turned them into an effective fighting force. I believe Colonel Shaw was a true leader because he looked after his subordinates with out any regard to the obstacles and prejudices. In one instance, Colonel Shaw overseas his subordinates and realized that they’re missing essential needs such as socks and shoes. The men were tired, and many have foot illnesses due to footwear conditions. Colonel Shaw took the initiative and cared for his men wellbeing he asked the quartermaster for 600 pairs of shoes to support his men wellbeing and battle readiness. He was refused and got frustrated because he did not believe that there were shoes and socks shortage and knew that the quartermaster favored white soldiers to take precedent over the 54th regiment. Colonel Shaw started throwing items from the shelves as the quartermaster tries to calm him, but he insisted with pride until he gained what his men wanted to be battle ready. Another great action by Colonel Shaw when he realized that his fellow men were underpaid comparing to the white soldiers. The men started to chant about the pay and Colonel Shaw calms his men by saying “If you men take no pay then none of us will” (reference a) this quote showed his comrade and willingness to sacrifice for his men. Great leaders put their people first, and Colonel Shaw did just that. I believe Colonel Shaw leadership style developed to excellence as he gained more experience from battle fields and being a leader to soldiers with diverse backgrounds. Colonel Shaw last moments was fighting in the front lines alongside his men. The soldiers were committed and willing to give the ultimate sacrifice to achieve a common goal and to be led by a great leader to achieve that
The film opens with a scene portraying the Battle of Antietam where Union soldiers are being led by Captain Robert Gould Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick. This battle took
Captain Robert Shaw is injured at the Battle of Antietam and is sent to Boston on medical leave where he is recommended for a promotion to the rank of Colonel, and control of the first all-black regiment, which he accepts. In camp, Trip is caught leaving and Shaw orders him to be whipped in front of the troops. Soon after, Shaw is told that Trip had left to find new shoes. Shaw finds out that shoes and socks were in stock but were being rejected to his soldiers because of their race. He defends his Regiment again when black soldiers were paid less than whites.
General Lee always knew what was best for his troops also. He knew how to blend his troops needs and his needs to win the war perfectly. This mix of being able to satisfy his troops and his needs to win the war for the south was a perfect concoction to victory. General Robert E. Lee was also a faith man. He completely loved God and nothing could ever change that.
Altogether, General George S. Patton was a powerful leader that inspired the likes of many of his men, encouraging them to achieve the best possible results. As a leader in the United States Army, Patton helped model the way for future soldiers and officers, inspire a shared vision among him and his subordinates, challenging the process by taking risks and oftentimes doing things that others disapprove of, and enabling others to act by creating several opportunities for soldiers to learn and become more effective including the creation of the Tank Crew
In order to inspire Soldiers to win in battle, Colonel Freeman understood he had to gain their trust. His presence at training as well as fighting alongside his unit members on the battlefield, instilled confidence and reinforced trust in his Soldiers. He provided encouragement and confidence to his team. An example of that confidence was during an attack, Colonel Freeman, his executive officer, and his Soldiers laid out their weapons and consolidated ammunition for the last stand. Colonel Freeman displayed an even temperament and convinced his Soldier to believe that the conditions were not as bad as the seemed and he still had control of their destiny.
Yet, with the shift from callousness and apathy shown by the white command toward empathy and trust between the regiment and the command, soldiers turned into disciplined God-fearing wholesome freedom fighters. Col Shaw created an equal environment in which a purpose of fighting for everyone’s freedom was the upmost priority. a. The final scene in which Confederates bury Col Shaw along with the rest of his soldiers sums up the story by suggesting the triumph over racism within the military ranks against Confederacy, the preservation of the Union, and the emancipation of freedom. Col Shaw overcame his prejudices by being emerging into the ranks of his own men by putting himself equally next to the first ranks and off his horse, which earned him the respect and created the motivation to fight without fear against supremacy and for
1. Initially, Colonel Shaw is somewhat distant from his soldiers, struggling to find a way to connect with them and earn their respect. He is also somewhat conflicted about the role that African American soldiers should play in the war, and is uncertain about how to lead them effectively. 2. As the regiment trains and prepares for battle, Shaw gradually gains the trust and respect of his soldiers.
He is then shown to eventually join and support them in their boycott. In reality however, Shaw was the one who inspired his soldiers to boycott their pay. When they enlisted, the soldiers were promised a pay of $13 a month that was equal to white soldiers (“To colored Men”). But they were later informed that they would only receive $7 per month with $3 taken out for clothing, while white soldiers received free clothing (“The 54th). When Shaw learned of this, he wrote to Governor Andrew protesting against the pay cut and insisting that the regiment should be taken out of the army if the government did not keep to its promise (“The Biography”).
In the beginning of the occurrence Shaw Initially only took the the command of the 54th regiment to satisfy his mother and father. Shaw
After that he realized to get there respect he needed to show it to them. Slowly he gains respect of the soldiers and the officers by getting them new supplies like shoes, uniforms and refused to take the payment they offered him because the soldiers were going to get paid lower than the white men. Shaw’s leadership skills have changed from the beginning, to a strong and brave leader as he lead his regiment to the final battle to the front line. The regiment view of Shaw has changed to him receiving full respect from his soldiers, and a strong leader you lead the first Colored regiment in the civil
After Matthew Broderick is appointed Colonel, then appoints Cary Elwes as his second-in-command. Together, with the help of Sergeant Major Mulcahy, they train the black men to fight, only to hear the Confederates are planning, executing all black soldiers and white officers commanding them on sight. They go on anyway, and Robert Shaw knows something about his commanding officers that he uses to get them in their first minor battle in South Carolina, one that proves victorious. Shaw volunteers his infantry for the assault on Fort Wagner, a battle held on a small strip of the beach, so little cover, and sure to suffer great loss. Including Shaw, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Thomas, Cary Elwes, about half their force is killed.
Through the past 11 years that I have been an enlisted Soldier, I have seen the value of leadership and the effect good and poor leadership can have on Soldiers and
In the battle scene, the 54th is pinned down and taking massive amounts of enemy fire, and yet none of the soldiers are making any sort of move to fight back. Their comrades are dying all around them, but the men simply lie there in the sand covering their heads. Thus it falls to Colonel Robert Shaw to be the beacon of courage for his men in order to lead them to glory. While the movie is undoubtedly about the struggles of the African American men of the 54th, it cannot be overlooked that at every turn they require guidance and mercy from their benevolent white colonel. It would be unrealistic for a company of African American men to accomplish what they did in the Civil War without Shaw’s help, but it is still worth noting that in some ways this feels largely like movies where the white man comes to save the savages (e.g. Dances With Wolves, Avatar, The Last Samurai).
He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent" (McCarther 2015). A leader should lead from the front and also have the ability to think quickly on their feet and take care of their Soldiers. Have faith and trust that the leadership is doing their best to keep everything in
