In life we tend to see failure as a terrible thing. When we do fail, most of the time we want to give up and see it as the end of the world. However there are few that see failure as an opportunity to do better and rethink the mistakes that were made in the past. Angela Duckworth, Emily Hanford, and CarolDweck all provide their research on how one can have highachievement e in life. Hope is a powerful thing; more powerful than death itself. Night, by Elie Wiesel, is about a jewish boy who is put into a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Elie doubted his faith to survive but had others to lean on during the hardship. Elie had the support of others as a sense of hope to survive the long, cold nights, with little food and water.

Never giving up is one of the most important things a person must do in their life, and the book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick contains this as it’s theme. This book follows the life of 2 young boys that have very troubling events over the course of the book, but despite all these events they stay strong, and never give up. We could all learn from these fictional yet very real characters and improve our lives by following their example. If you do this, then limits on you will be re sharpen and you too can accomplish amazing things just like these characters.

If people give up all the time individuals will never get far in life or become successful, but if people try their best until people get better or at least try, people are less likely to fail. To begin, in the realistic fiction novel, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, there is a kid named Brian Robeson whose parents are divorced. So he gets on a plane to go see his dad, but usually stays mainly with his mom. When he goes on the plane for the first time since the divorce his plane crashes in the middle of a forest. Brian has to learn how to survive in the wilderness and hope he gets saved.

The phrase, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe”, by H.L. Mencken, an American essayist and social critic, is an accurate and agreeable statement. What Mencken is trying to say here is that people in this society don’t really look for freedom to do whatever they want, instead they look for the feeling of safety because without safety you can’t live life to the fullest. What is freedom if you don’t feel safe? Mencken’s quote emphasizes the true meaning of safety and gets you thinking about what it would be life if we didn’t have that.

Washington Life can often be full of obstacles. However, that does not mean that overcoming them and being successful is not possible. Obstacles in life are there as challenges. Giving up is a decision people can make in the face of stress; Martin Seligman examined this idea in his original research experiment in 1992. In his experiment, animals were subjected to electric shock where escape was not possible. Following this initial ‘trapped’ experience animals were given the opportunity to learn a response, which would allow them to escape the electric shocks. What Seligman found was that these animals had become so dispirited and apathetic that they did not try to escape the shock even when it was possible. Comparably, a human experiment was conducted using inescapable sound and findings were similar to the animal experimentation.

Though writers may take different paths to communicate this, the strength that comes from these unique connections that exist between individuals resonates with everyone. Have you ever thought how important is to never give up? The author Phyllis Naylor thought by his novel teach people to never give up on what you want, no matter how hard it may seem. The speaker of the poem reflects that every individual will have to make difficult judgments that may not always have the best results, as Robert Frost writes: “Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.” Robert Frost chooses these words to create a sense of pity and remorse from the perspective of the speaker and to show that certain decision will have to be lived with regardless if that was the right choice.
